  1. I have to admit that for many years this way of searching for accommodation (home exchange, etc.) has really intrigued me. I don’t know why I never dared to try. I will research Holiday Swap as well.

    1. Yeah, trying new ways to travel may at first be a bit strange or even scary. But luckily most options out there like House Swapping have been tried & tested by many before. So that is why we love how we found this site amid a bunch of Digital Nomad’s tools for lodging.

  2. wowo …thanks so much for sharing this holiday swap concept here, it’s new to me as a travel lover & I would love to explore this more in my next travel planning since now I’ve learnt it from your sharing here. cheers

  3. It’s so smart to travel this way. Saves money and gives you an insider’s edge when visiting new areas.

  4. This sounds pretty good. Home swapping is a new idea. I will surely check Home Swap for our next travel adventure.

    1. Hey Ramil,
So I think Home Swapping has been around for a while but I dont think it had an official site to help keep it organized or safe. So this site definitely has organized it better for digital nomads & regular travelers looking for more of an authentic experience.

  5. What a cool idea. More of the people we house sit for seem interested in not only house sitting but also home swapping. One, it is a cool way to see the world for free, and two, it rockets people outside of their comfort zone into freedom. Most homeowners become creatures of habit, patterns and all that comfy stuff that needs to be shattered here and there, for awakening the mind. Swapping or sitting does that. Take it from a homeless full time digital nomad LOL 🙂 Excellent post here.

    1. Totally agree! So many people are people of habit. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes it is nice to stay at a nice hotel amid all the noise and fun! But if you are looking for a different or perhaps a longer experience in a new place, then Home Swapping is a great alternative for travelers & digital nomads alike!

  6. This is really cool idea and it help a lot and I can see that it’s easy to use it. I will keep this in mind. Thank you for sharing!

  7. How awesome is this? Such a great idea! My only concern is if anyone would want to come stay in my house in the suburbs of Kansas City compared to the places I want to visit!

    1. Like we said to Jen, I guess it cant hurt to try right? For example, Darcee & I have stayed in some nice suburbs in Bangkok, Edinburgh, London, and Port of Spain Tobago to name a few places because it saved me $100s of dollars & public transportation was super simple & cheap! In fact we stayed in suburb called Buckinghamshire that was 45 minutes from Oxford because it was free for us and close to Stonehenge, the Magna Carta in Salisbury, and of course the famous University. So who knows.

  8. I love this idea of swapping houses for holidays, especially now, as I have an apartment in Mexico. I have to figure out this topic in detail. It’s a great article with lots of tips. Holiday Swap seems to be a great website, easy to use.

    1. Ooh, I bet you can easily get some amazing Holiday Swaps with an apartment in Mexico especially for those “Snow birds” looking for a warm escape! Heck, we may have to list our home in New Orleans and Swap with you because we have like 10 different Bucket List Items in various parts of Mexico! Is your place free during Dia de los Muertos?

  9. This definitely gave me something to think about. I’m not sure too many people would be interested in coming to where we live though. Guess you never know!

    1. Cant hurt to see for sure. I have stayed in some nice suburbs in Bangkok, Edinburgh, London, and Port of Spain Tobago to name a few places because it saved me $100s of dollars & public transportation was super simple & cheap! Plus, we often think people are active or attraction seeking travelers like us, but there are many people that want to take a week or 2 just to escape and hide out with peace, quiet, & a good book

  10. ohh wowo…. didn’t know about this holiday swap site until reading your story here. that’s so cool the idea, of course need a reliable platform to ensure travel safety when doing home exchange. Thanks for sharing this, it opens to me another travel ways now. cheers siennylovesdrawing, wordpress, com

  11. Oh I remember watching the movie a while ago and thinking that it is a cool idea!! Now I just need to make sure our home is ready for it 🙂

  12. I haven’t heard or thought about this. This is so great and very informative post. I’m gonna share this with my husband, thanks for sharing this with us!

    1. Are you using this to Hint to your Husband that you need a Holiday for perhaps Christmas or Valentines? Cause Darcee can show you some mind tricks she uses on me (Eric) to get her a great Holiday Swap haha!

  13. I love home swapping and I am a member with Home Exchange which is really a great way to meet a host and trade in various ways. This is a great way to travel and do things in a slow and affordable way

    1. That is so awesome Noel. We had heard some about Home Exchanges or Holiday Swaps before but really had no idea where to look until we took the deep dive on the internet and found Holiday Swap.

  14. This is the first for me to hear about holiday swap. Sounds interesting and very budget friendly! I’m going to research more about this!

    1. Yeah, Holiday Swap has been around for a bit in the United Kingdom but it is finally making a world wide showing and we love it cause what a great way to find interesting and cost effective lodging while traveling

  15. I’m not sure how comfortable I would be with this, but it sounds like a good idea for those who would.

  16. Home swapping really can give a powerful way to see the country and different places. And it could be helpful for a budget, too.

    1. We agree! No more battling all those bizarre extra fees with hotels or worse Airbnb! Now you can find really cool places but at great deals any where in the world

  17. I was watching The Holiday recently and I was wondering if this is a real thing. Such a great idea! I love to travel, I may have to really delve into this now. So many possibilities! Thanks for sharing this!

    1. Darcee & I (Eric) thought the same thing when we watched the movie cause the whole concept seems really interesting and when we discovered Holiday Swap we thought cool! Plus when we found out it saved $$$, I (eric) became even happier cause I am a wee bit frugal on lodging cause it takes away $$ from my Food & Drink budget!

  18. This looks like such a neat idea! Unfortunately it’s going to be well into the new year before my family and I do anything when it comes to traveling anywhere. But if I ever need any ideas; I’ll definitely look into this! Thank you for sharing it with us!

    1. Well maybe using sites like Holiday Swap will help you not only make traveling easier but also a bit cheaper so you dont have to wait so long to tick off those amazing Bucket List Dreams you have to see magical places around the world with you family!

  19. This sounds like such a great alternative to hotels. I think that living – temporarily – in someone else’s house is an adventure in itself. Also, I love the feeling of being a – temporary – local: I enjoy shopping in local supermarkets, checking out drugstores, rushing home from…well, only supposedly work 😉 So this would be just perfect for me. Plus, of course, the financial aspect which also plays a huge role in my travels – I’m a poverty jet setter, after all 😉

    1. Haha, yeah, we travel like vagabonds, so we feel you with the “poverty jet setter” aspect. But I agree, this is such a great alternative to mainstream lodging as it gives you a different perspective while traveling anywhere in the world!

  20. Wow, I hadn’t heard of this before. What a great idea for budget travel. I vaguely remember hearing something like this regarding swapping pet sitting, but not for homes.

    1. Yeah, there are a few legit Pet Sitting & House-Sitting sites out there & they are great but ultimately you have to remember that you then have an obligation to the owner of the house to fulfill in exchange for your stay. But with Holiday Swap, what we love is it’s like Airbnb without all the extra fees, cleaning requirements, or taxes & regulations.

  21. I’ve been talking about doing a home exchange ever since the movie The Holiday. I’ve never been able to bring myself to actually do it likely due to having a stranger in your home and I don’t live in a “touristy” area of Ontario that I think most travellers abroad would want to experience. Great info shared, and maybe we might consider Holiday Swap.

    1. Well, the “having a stranger in your home” may not be too much of an issue as Holiday Swap does a real good job of vetting their Travelers. But we get that! However, with regards to where you live in Ontario, you may be surprised how many people would want to escape the hustle & bustle of a big city for a nice quiet suburban holiday. Isnt that what happened in the movie? Doesnt Amanda (Cameron Diaz) swap her mansion in Los Angeles for Iris’ (Kate Winslet) quaint rural cottage in Surrey, England for the holidays?
Who knows, maybe you’d swap and be “forced to enjoy” your holiday with Jude Law?

  22. wow, never knew about holiday swapping! and the name says it all. But first I have to have a great home to exchsnge!

    1. Well, I am sure if you had a castle it would be easy to swap. But what makes Holiday Swap really cool is that unique they are really flexible about what you can offer to swap. Sure, you can swap an entire house or apartment, but you can just as easily swap a shared bedroom in a house (assuming acknowledgement of potential housemates and their permission). This allows much more flexibility and variation of what can be swapped, providing an experience tailored to your needs.

  23. I must admit that we have talked about a home exchange. It is good to read more about Holiday Swap and understand how it all works. The token system for payment is quite unique. A great way to see a new area and get some local expertise.

    1. Yeah, Darcee & I have talked about it as well in the past because we love using local spots without dealing with the fees of Airbnb or the obligations of House/Pet Sitting gigs. This way we get all the fun local benefits without the “extras”. Plus, with Baby Ricky, I think it is easier to find some more family friends spots on Holiday Swap with their home exchanges.
