Staying on Top of Your Oral Health When Traveling

Staying on Top of Your Oral Health When Traveling

Traveling is a great way to explore the world and make memories that will last a lifetime. However, as exciting as it can be, it can also be hard to keep up with your oral health. With different climates, foods, and water, it can be challenging to maintain the same level of oral care that you would at home. But no matter where you go, staying on top of your oral health is essential. From packing the right items to visiting your dentist, here are some crucial tips for keeping your smile healthy and happy while traveling.

Pack a new toothbrush

If you are on a long trip, you should bring an extra toothbrush. This is because bacteria and toothpaste can build up on your toothbrush quickly if you do not change it. This is especially important if you have braces or use retainers, as you may have more bacteria build-up due to the brackets. Keeping your toothbrush in a case for prolonged periods can speed up bacterial growth, so ensure you always have a spare and you keep your toothbrush clean and dry at all times.

Take fluoride toothpaste with you.

If you want to be extra careful with staying on top of your oral health while traveling, consider bringing your own toothpaste. Taking your current fluoride toothpaste from home ensures you are still getting the right level of protection rather than worrying if different countries and locations use the same amount of fluoride and the same quality as you are used to. The same goes for floss and mouthwash if you use it too.

Avoid overly sugary foods and drinks.

Avoid eating excessive amounts of foods with added sugar, such as cookies, pastries, and candy, as tempting as they can be while you are away. This may seem obvious, but it’s easy to forget to limit your sugar intake while traveling. Instead, opt for water or sparkling water and low-sugar drinks such as unsweetened tea. Not only will this help preserve your oral health but also your physical health and energy levels.

Pack chewing gum for flights or long journeys

If you are taking a long flight or journey, chewing gum may be a helpful tool for staying on top of your oral health. This is because chewing gum can increase the flow of saliva, which can help clean your teeth and gums. It can also help reduce the risk of dry mouth caused by dry cabin air too.

Visit your dentist before you leave.

Visiting your dentist before you leave is essential. Book an appointment in plenty of time so you can get any treatment or even advice from your dentist before you travel. This will allow you to ensure there are no issues within your mouth you need to have treatment for or that it will cause a problem during your travels.

  1. Totally agree with visiting a dentist, especially before longer trips away from home. If they uncover any issues that might cause a bigger problem, we can ensure it is either fixed before leaving if time permits, or at least know what to do if needed (and I say this from experience:)). Plus, it is one thing to strike off our to-do….

    1. Yeah there is nothing worse than needing dental or medical care for pain or sickness while traveling. That is why we strongly insist not only on visiting your Dentist before you travel but getting a check up with your doctor and stopping by the pharmacist to resupply your medications.
