Whenever you watch movies like Castaway, Swiss Family Robinson, or Robinson Crusoe, no one ever talks about how they survived without a bathroom or toilet paper for that matter. So I am not going to lie, we wish the Golden Stars Inn in Freiburg, Germany was using Saxophones to pee in cause Saxophones suck! But we do admire their creativity in repurposing these old German Tubas as urinals! Now as a classically trained French Horn player, I know a little bit about emptying out the pipes and spit valves. So heed my advice, be wary of where you put your shoes. Also, fair warning, these don’t actually make music when using them, so if you hear beautiful music, please consult a doctor immediately!

If you are having any issues going, perhaps the toilet at the Kara-Tyurek weather station in Siberia can help get the proverbial juices flowing. That is because this outhouse is located on a perch some 8,530 feet above sea level overlooking the Altai Mountains. But if the height alone doesn’t help get you moving, don’t worry. Knowing that the only way to leave this remote destination is to catch helicopter that only comes once a month may help you hurry up!

Minimalist travel is all the rage these days. Whether you are heading for a weekend getaway or trying to tick off one of the major items on your Travel Bucket list, people are looking for ways to pack lighter and smarter. Perhaps this is due to all the extra fees that are being tacked on by airlines. Or maybe it is because carrying around tons of extra gear is getting harder as we get older. In April of 2017, we went on an epic adventure across Scotland, England, & Wales. We were pumped! Again, there’s pretty much nothing relaxing about standing in line at airports or even sitting on a plane itself, but if we travel by air, then it’s just pretty much a part of what we have to endure to get where we’re going. When traveling on a road trip, there’s none of this going on, so you simply just get in your car or RV and drive on your own schedule and at your own pace. You can stop and take in the sights whenever you feel like it.

As you can see, there are definitely some strong reasons as to why a road trip is the best way to travel, but how do you make sure it goes as smoothly as possible?

There are some things you should make sure you have in place before taking off on the open road to make sure things go well:

1. Making sure your vehicle is up to the latest safety standards — check for chips in the windshield and go to Glass.net if you find any, ask a mechanic to service your engine, keep your tires at the right level, etc. If you don’t do these checks then you might end up breaking down in the middle of nowhere! Plus, you should always make sure that you have the correct insurance by visiting somewhere like State Farm. Not only will insurance protect you if you have an accident, but it is a legal requirement. You should also have additional insurance like travel insurance and accident coverage so that you have quality legal representation for the seriously injured should you need it.
2. Things like medical emergencies are unlikely, but they can and do happen, so just being prepared for these will make things much easier on everyone.
3. It’s also a good idea to create some kind of plan for your trip and make a list of the things you want to see, but don’t get too hung up on it because the whole point of a road trip is about having the freedom to not have to be stuck on a certain schedule all the time.
4. Make sure you have enough supplies to take on your trip is also important. You will need to bring plenty of food, water, and even extra gas and a spare tire just in case you get stranded somewhere and can’t reach a gas station.
5. If you’re traveling with children, then you’ll need to take some extra steps to make sure they’re entertained along the way, because, depending on how old they are, they may not appreciate the beautiful sights along the way, so to prevent them bugging you with questions every 5 minutes of “are we there yet?” then bringing along something like an iPad with their favorite movies and shows, some board games, and maybe even things like craft sets and coloring books will help keep them entertained throughout a long road trip, which in turn will ensure that you get to enjoy a more relaxing trip yourself.
