Recently, there was an article in the National Review that declared “American Men are Suffering a Friendship Recession!” Now, at first, I had no idea what they were talking about. But the article showed that the percentage of men with at least six close friends fell by half since 1990, from 55 percent to 27 percent. Now that may seem crazy but it isn’t too far-fetched! The question is, why is this happening? What is going on with guys that our friendships are dropping like flies?

The article gives some ambiguous answers, but perhaps one of the biggest reasons is that we just aren’t putting in the time to connect with each other. So how can we remedy that? How can we find ways to connect more with our old pals & create stronger bonds? Well, the answer may be as simple as the classic guy’s trip to a place like Sheridan, Wyoming!

Now, I am sure many of you guys are reading this and thinking, “Why on earth would I want to take a guys trip to Sheridan, Wyoming? Isn’t that just a big old cowboy town with cows and horses?” Well, to be fair, Sheridan is historically known for its ranchers, pioneers, and definitely its cowboys along the Westward migration trails. But there is so much to do there for men of any type looking to bond during a guys trip.

So what makes a good bonding event?  No, the answer is not to end up in the famous Clearmont Jail as seen above! Rather, it is just spending time together.

Now of course this can be a bit tricky because you will also want to find activities to match the personality of your crew. So, whether you love active adventures like sports, backpacking, and fishing or you prefer a more classic gentleman-type event with art, food, and cocktails, Sheridan is the place to go on your next guy’s trip because it is packed with things to do.

Go Fishing with the Fellas

What better place to go fishing than to one of Hemingway’s favorite locations! That is right, Big Papa loved Wyoming and would often head out on trout fishing expeditions in the Big Horns! That is probably because Sheridan has such an avid fly fishing scene.

When going on a fishing trip with the guys, start out at the Fly Shop of the Big Horns in Downtown Sheridan. These guys are great because they stock the store with the largest selection of flies and fly-tying materials around. Plus, if you and your crew want to actually hit the water, their guide services can create the perfect guys trip for any skill level of fly fishing!

Now of course you can always go on your own into Big Horn National Forest or other areas. But make sure you get your licenses in order at the Wyoming Game & Fish Department before you leave. The agency makes it really simple for you, plus they have some really fun fishing challenges to kick up your guy’s trip! For example, out of their 10 major fishing challenges, the Wyoming Game & Fish Department has their famous Cutt Slam where you attempt to catch their 4 native cutthroat trout species! If this is all confusing to you, perhaps you should start your guy’s trip in Sheridan by visiting the Fish Hatchery in nearby Story, Wyoming. Here you can explore one of the oldest fish hatcheries and feed the various trout at the base of the Bighorn Mountains!

Go Hiking with your Homies

There is something truly amazing about a guys trip where you go hiking and camping. So, it is a no-brainer that Sheridan, Wyoming is a major destination for male bonding while getting outdoors. That is because the Bighorn National Forest is absolutely beautiful and packed with tons of things to do. 

Now, if all you want to do is set up camp and make s’mores then the beauty of the Bighorns alone is inviting. But if you and your crew love to hike then get ready for some amazing things to find and explore. That is because the park consists of over one million acres of scenic canyons and mountains. 

Plus there are some cool things to do in the Bighorns like finding the 5 “secret” waterfalls scattered throughout the park. For the most part, finding these waterfalls make up a day trip type of adventure with your gang. But don’t let that fool you because even though it is barely a 1-mile round trip, even the amazing Porcupine Falls drops down 440 feet! Other nearby falls that are a bit longer to get to but definitely worth the trek are Paradise or Bucking Mule Falls!

Fun Fact: When visiting the Big Horns make sure you check out the Tongue River Canyon! It is perhaps the most beautiful canyon in all of Wyoming. Within the canyon is of course the Tongue River where it is said that to beat traffic, loggers would ride the 11-mile Tongue River Tie Flume down the mountain and through the Box Canyon tunnels to reach the town of Dayton. See some Art with your Amigos

When you travel to foreign countries like Colombia, you almost expect to spend a day exploring street art in places like Cartagena. But if you and your friends like walking around checking out murals and pieces of western art, then Sheridan won’t disappoint. In 2001, the Grinnell Plaza project funded and then displayed over 100 permanent pieces of art throughout the downtown. So it is a treat to walk around with your crew amid what is known as the Sheridan Public Arts! Then afterwards as you are walking around downtown at night, be sure to check out the amazing display of neon lights. The glow from neon upon all of the classic buildings alone is an art lover’s dream.

Now for those guys who prefer walking amid various styles of art in a gallery, you can find some amazing displays at the Brinton Museum in Big Horn. Here you will be greeted with some of the finest art and artifacts from American Indians in the region. Plus, the original owner, Bradford Brinton collected beautiful works. Inside you will find pieces from Western American Artists like Remington, Reiss, and Kleiber as well as many others.

Fun Fact: In nearby Clearmont, the UCROSS Foundation is a 20,000-acre working cattle ranch in northeastern Wyoming. But what is really cool is that it also operates as a retreat for visual artists, writers, composers, and artists in all creative disciplines. Plus for those of guys who love Longmire, the author, Craig Johnson, uses the hills of his Ucross home as inspiration for his crime drama novels.

Play some Games with the Gang

As you can see there is no shortage of things to do in Sheridan, Wyoming. But perhaps one of the coolest things to do with your guys is to and play some fun games. Now of course you can always go shoot pool or throw darts in the Rainbow Bar or toss corn hole at some of the beer halls.  But if you want to have a real adventure you should bring your gang over to the Big Horn Axe to throw axes! Since early 2020, they have been “throwing blades” as they put it and it is truly an event. The staff will set you up with their computerized scoring which is much like a bowling game. Then, off you go to test your skills at throwing various hatchets!

Now for those who are into more bizarre-type activities, nearby at the Koltiska Distillery, you can test your skills at Butt Darts! From what we gather, you drop as many quarters from your rear into a shot glass placed on the floor in order to “Win!” So have fun trying to win Butt Darts on your next guy’s trip. At least at the distillery, there is no shortage of Cowboy Coolaid!

Go Biking with your Brothers

There is something truly iconic about riding a motorcycle across America and there is no shortage of amazing motorcycle rides in and around Sheridan, Wyoming. So whether you are riding the winding roads towards Bighorn National Forest or you are hitting the open road down towards Clearmont, you’ll love the views. But perhaps some of the most fun rides are those heading to Dayton and Ranchester. Here you will cruise through small communities that time forgot and stop at some iconic bars and restaurants. For many, a stop-off at the Historic Dayton Mercantile for lunch is one of the best bucket list experiences ever. The old Mercantile is still operational and offers amazing plate lunches inside at their old counter. Fair warning though, make sure you and your boys are respectful. The ladies working the counter at the Mercantile take no flack from any road warrior!

Attend a Polo Match with your Pals

It may sound weird to attend a real-life polo match in Wyoming. But it is truly an awesome experience for any guy’s trip. The Big Horn Equestrian Center has been in operation for more than 100 years now and allows people to come in and watch both training and matches during the season. Set upon 60 acres, the beautiful grounds are well-groomed beneath the Big Horn Mountains. But the highlight is seeing some of the most beautiful horses in the world as their riders play to win! Then to boot, there are a plethora of events on the grounds. Depending on the time of year, you can enjoy music festivals, soccer matches, or even an epic fireworks show. 

Fun Fact: It is said that many famous people can often be seen at the Polo Grounds during the official season. For example, Joan Rivers was a long time fan of Wyoming & the sport of Polo. In fact, it is said that she loved both so much that after she died, she gave a last request: “please have my ashes scattered where the buffalo roam and where the polo mallets whirl…” (source: Tall Tales by Sheridan Board of Tourism)

Get your Chums Classed Up

Sometimes you want to roll out like the Rat Pack on a guy’s trip. So if you need to turn your guys from Neanderthals to high-class gentlemen, then head to downtown Sheridan. Here you will find a plethora of stores like King’s Ropes & Saddlery, where they can purchase some nice clothes or find great accessories. But perhaps one of the neatest things to do is to head over to the White Swan Barber Shop where you and your gang can get a haircut and a classic straight razor shave in one of the oldest continually operating barbershops in the country!

Afterward, you and your gang of gentlemen can hit the town. So, of course, that would mean a stop at the historic Mint Bar. Founded in 1907, this timeless bar is laden with historical pictures and various animals mounted on its walls. Even Hemingway himself ponied up to the bar drinking while writing A Farewell to Arms. To boot, during prohibition, the Mint Bar pretended to be a cigar company and soda shop in the front while they ran a speakeasy out of the back.

Take your Friends to the Fort

There is something about learning American History that just seems to fit a true guy’s trip. That is why a trip to Fort Phil Kearny just south of Sheridan is a perfect day adventure to go on. It is an interesting interactive site. What is really cool is that you can learn about the Indian Wars. Plus they offer insights into the struggles of the early pioneers traveling along the Bozeman Trail. On a beautiful day, you can walk the original grounds amid the reconstructed stockade and imagine the battles the army had with the local Native American tribes while living there. 

Enjoy Adult Beverages with your Brothers

Ernest Hemingway once said, “I drink to make other people more interesting.” Hopefully, this isn’t the case when wanting to celebrate with your friends on an epic guy’s trip. But just in case, there are a ton of great options for the guys to meet up for adult beverages. 

For those of you who love beer, then look no further than downtown Sheridan. With major establishments like Black Tooth Brewing you are bound to find a beer you enjoy. Plus they are right around the corner from the Big Horn Axe company. However, you may want to wait to toss back a few before tossing sharp weapons near your boys. If you are willing to try something new and a bit smaller, the local style brewery of Smith Alley Brewing and Public House offers not only excellent beer but a great menu of food to pair with your suds.

For the guys who consider themselves cocktail connoisseurs, you don’t have to fret. Of course, Wyoming is known for its beer but the cocktail scene in Sheridan is growing nicely. Of course, you can always sit at Frackleton’s bar and enjoy their Happy Specials on drinks. But perhaps the best secret in Sheridan is at McGregor’s Bar & Grille. This place has some of the best cocktails in all of Wyoming. But what is also awesome is that you can sit outside beneath the most beautiful views of the Bighorns!

There are plenty of places to stay in Sheridan, Wyoming that will fit your guy’s style and budget. Whether you are looking for a simple motel, an active hotel and event center, or a quiet luxury hotel, you won’t be disappointed with your options.

• Basic: There are several bargain franchise-style hotels and motels in Sheridan. For example, there’s a Holiday Inn, Quality Inn, Econo Lodge, or a Super 8 by Wyndham to name a few. Of course, these typical bargain hotels don’t come with many amenities. But with all the things to do in Sheridan, you won’t want to spend much time in your room anyway. There’s no denying that camping is a great way to experience the great outdoors. However, camping isn’t for everyone, so what can you do if you want to go on a family camping trip, but one of your group would rather stay in a hotel?

One option is to compromise and have a more luxurious camping adventure. Glamping, as the term is known, has risen in popularity in recent years. The following are some essential items you need to create the ultimate luxury camping adventure for you and your group:

1. Off-Road Camper

There’s undoubtedly plenty of camping sites that you can visit that offer amenities such as electrical hook-ups, shower and washing facilities, and entertainment venues. However, if you want to experience a true camping adventure, you would go off the beaten track.

Camping in a remote location offers plenty of peace and tranquility, along with much scope for exploring. You should consider hybrid campers as you want something that will endure moving across rugged terrain than a traditional RV.

Hybrid campers also offer better shelter and protection from the elements than pitching up an ordinary tent.

It’s even possible to take a roll-up mattress and a quick-assembly bed so that you don’t have to brave the cold by sleeping on ground level.

5. Portable Refrigerator

While cool boxes are great for keeping things chilled, you need to place some ice packs inside them to ensure cold temperatures for as long as possible. Thankfully, that’s not a problem you need to consider if you take a portable refrigerator with you.

You’ll need a power source for it, of course, such as a diesel or gas generator. But, your food and drink will always get kept cold, just like at home.

For those who don’t know, on July 17, 2021, I (Eric) along with Chris Nolan will be Climbing Devil’s Tower for ALS. It is a daunting bucket list item that to be honest, kind of makes me nervous. But despite my apprehension, this climb will hopefully be a way we can educate others about those with ALS. Plus, we are doing it to honor Chris’s brother Sean. Back in 2016, Sean was diagnosed with ALS. But in talking with Chris, we also wanted to find a way to do this for others. So, we came up with an idea to Climb and to Pray Devil’s Tower.

A History of Praying while Tackling a Bucket List item

A few years back, I undertook perhaps one of my greatest bucket list adventures, the Camino de Santiago. To tackle this pilgrimage, I took the traditional and most common route, known as the Camino Frances. Essentially, it is a 490-mile walk from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port on the French side of the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The purpose was to walk to a holy site where it is believed that the remains of the Apostle St. James the Greater are buried.

Now people embark on this adventure for many personal reasons. Some walk as part of a spiritual retreat and others to discover themselves. There are even some people who spend the 30-day walk in hopes that a miracle touches them or someone they love. For me, it was a combination of it all because I had kind of lost my “way” with my life.

So, I wanted to find my way back and the idea came to me to Walk and Pray.

To do this, I had decided to commit a portion of my daily activity to prayer while walking The Camino. But I didn’t want to make it all about myself. So I asked for the personal intentions of others. Essentially, every morning at the start of my walk. I would focus on my personal intentions for that day. Then I would focus on the intentions of another and then pray the novena for both our intentions. As I continued to walk, I tried to stay in reflection of that daily prayer and intentions of the day.

Why we want to Pray while we Climb Devil’s Tower

Now, of course, we are raising money for two different ALS foundations to donate in Sean’s name. We are raising money to donate in Sean Nolan’s name to both The Steve Gleason Foundation and The Tennessee Chapter of the ALS Association.

But while promoting something strange happened.

People kept sharing how ALS has affected their lives. Whether it struck them personally, ravaged a loved one, or affected a friend, countless people have been telling me their “ALS Story!” In telling me their story, they would passionately thank Chris, Darcee, & I and say how they felt like we were doing it for them too.

It was then that we realized that our climb was bigger than us and perhaps even Sean. We were going to need to climb and to pray Devil’s Tower in our task to summit the nation’s first National Monument.

Let us Carry your Intentions up Devil’s Tower

1. Please pray for us as we Climb Devil’s Tower on July 17th. Like I have said before, it is a bit scary. So if you can on July 17th, please pray for us to physically finish.

The logistics of carrying your intentions up Devil’s Tower

So, I am not going to lie, I have no idea exactly how we are going to be able to climb and to pray while tackling all 867 feet (265 m) from summit to base. I mean we don’t really want any excess weight during this nearly 7-hour climb. But what we would like to do is to write down all the intentions, prayers, and names on a sheet of paper and safeguard them in my pocket.

Before we climb, as a family we will read all the private intentions, prayers, and names of those affected by ALS. Then, safely tuck them into our pocket. Then if possible, at the very top, as we look upon the amazing views of Wyoming, we will repeat the process. However, if this isn’t possible when we finally return to the ground safely, we can then repeat the process in thanksgiving for a great experience that we shared with all of you.

How to Send us Your Intentions & Names

There are several ways you can send us your intentions or the names of those who you would like for us to carry up Devil’s Tower as we climb and pray:

Take your Camping Trip off the beaten track

One of the things that can really ruin a camping trip for a lot of adventurous sorts is, sad to say, other people. If you hit up a popular campsite, chances are there will be a lot of other people there, and although many o them will be totally chill and a lot of fun to get to know, some won’t. So, if you want to be sure that you’ll have an amazing time, without being interrupted by jerks or forced to tone it down because there’s a sweet family camping right across from you, take it off the beaten track and find the remotest (safe) spot to camp you can.

Wild camping is so much more exciting because you’re more isolated, the nature around you is often more rugged, and there’s always a sense that anything can happen, It’s something everyone should try at least once.

Don’t forget to pack the essentials

You might want your backpack to be as light as possible because let’s face it, it’s no fun carrying around the equivalent to a small adult on your back, but that doesn’t mean you can skimp on the essentials. As well as packing enough clothing suitable for all weather conditions, including waterproof clothing and shoes, you should also ensure that you have a decent flashlight and plenty of 18650 button top battery supplies so that you’re never without light. You’ll also want to make sure you have a decent water filter so that you can always have access to a drink, and a first aid kit just in case. You can probably work the rest out for yourself.

Don’t get lost

Getting lost can lead to lots of awesome and unexpected bucket list adventures and the stumbling upon hidden gems, but it can also get you killed, so be sure to have a map and compass as well as your phone’s GPS on you at all times, just in case.

Don’t let your food let you down

Just because you’re camping does not mean that you can’t enjoy a veritable feast every evening. These days, it’s perfectly easy to purchase vacuum packs that you can fill with lots of delicious pre-marinated meats or tofu if you prefer. Not only that, but portable camp stoves are getting smaller all the time, so taking one along has never been easier. That being said, there’s nothing like cooking your meat right over the campfire for that smoky BBQ taste. 

Oh, and don’t forget the drinks, make room for a cooler, and bring along lots of good wine and beer and it will feel like a five-star vacation even if you are out in the wildest of wilds.

Turn the tech off

Okay, so you’re going to want to document your awesome adventure so you can look back and remember someday, and I mean, Instagram, right? But if you want your camping trip to be the best it can be, don’t spend all day every day looking at your tech and agonizing over the perfect shots. When you’re spending time in nature, you should take the time to actually appreciate it. From the smallest tree to the furthest star, there is so much beauty in nature, and if you’re too busy on your phone to appreciate it, well you’ll have wasted your trip.

Respect nature

Speaking of nature, it’s important that you pay her the respect she’s due. You may be fully focused on the awesome adventures that are unfolding around you, but that doesn’t mean that you can forget to pick up your trash or trample all over those beautiful wildflowers. Before you do anything have a quick rethink about the impact it could have first. Not only is this the right thing to do, but it could help to stop you from getting it in the neck from park rangers and various other people who hate to see nature disrespected, which would really put a dampener on your trip. Do the right thing, and leave no trace.

Do your research

Even the smallest National Parks with the safest reputations can be dangerous – I mean they’re no all-inclusive resort – which is why it’s always a good idea to do your research before heading out camping. 

If you know in advance what, if any predators, there are in the area, and if you know where the most dangerous spots are, you can do a much better job of avoiding them and coming home unscathed. Oh, and speaking of home, make sure that someone back home always knows where you and your party have headed to each day, just in case they do need to send out a search party at some point!

Be good to your fellow campers

When you do come across other campers out on their own adventures, be polite. Say hi or give a nod of the head. If they look like they need help, give them it. If they could use something to eat, offer them a little food. Not only is this the kind thing to do, but it makes the camping experience more pleasant for everyone involved, and it can often lead to some solid friendships, Plus, you never know which of those people you meet will have the spookiest campfire stories, so you need to keep your o0ptions open!

There is no doubt that camping or visiting a National Park is on the rise in recent years. Perhaps, it’s because we are finally learning about their hidden beauty and fun adventure activities. I mean with all the things to do in Yellowstone, you could have an entire bucket list category for that park alone! Here are some of the top things to do in the area. Whether you are planning a trip there or want to add the area to your bucket list, there are a number of things to do and experience. With things like historic sites, overlooks, plenty of wildlife, and stunning waterfalls, there is something for everyone in the Smokies.

Clingmans Dome

Climbing up Clingmans Dome is a must to add to the list! It is over 6,600 feet high, and it sits right at the top of the National Park in Tennessee. You can drive up to it, and then just have a short walk over to it, with its great observation tower right at the top. It is a popular spot, so if you want to avoid the crowds, it is best to go early in the morning to experience it when it is much quieter. You can head that direction in winter too, as it is a good spot for skiing and snowshoers.

Fontana Lake

There is a dam on the Little River that helps to form Fontana Lake, which is located along the southern border area of the park. A long and slim lake, there are nearly two-hundred and fifty miles of shoreline to experience, with kayaking, fishing, canoeing, paddle boarders, and swimmers. If you want to see it all, then you could also think about hiring out a boat from the village, or one of the outdoor centers. On a summer’s day, it is so stunning, with fantastic views in a pretty secluded spot.

History of the Pioneers

Way back before the area became a National Park, the area was home to a number of settlers who began farming in the area, due to the number of hidden valleys. As a result, these days, you will find nearly one-hundred of these historic buildings left all over the park. In the town of Cades Cove, you can find a great range of churches, barns, mills, and cabins, that all date back to the early 1800s which is pretty amazing. There are a number of museums that you can visit too, as well as structures all dating back to that time period.

Pigeon Forge

Pigeon Forge is a mountain town in eastern Tennessee, and most famously it is known for being the home of Dollywood. If you’ve not heard of Dollywood before, then it is Dolly Parton’s Appalachian-themed park with rides and a water park, as well as a place to see many of her costumes and themed memorabilia on display. You can learn more about the city and what to do, because there are other things to do in the area other than Dollywood. The other attractions in the city include country music festivals, dinner theaters, and outlet malls. But it is not just a place for music lovers. Because it is set in the mountains, you will discover it is also a good place to experience the great outdoors too.

Do Go Chasing Waterfalls

If you love waterfalls, then the good news is that there are a lot of them in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There are over a hundred that you can experience, as there are miles and miles of rivers and streams. There are some trails to hike up to experience some of the most stunning waterfalls, such as Grotto, Laurel, or Rainbow Falls. You could also take some of the best motorcycle rides in America to see some if that suits you better. Or with Meigs Falls and The Sinks being some of the most accessible by driving, rev up the old convertible.

Hike the Appalachian Trail

There are so many great hiking trails in the area, so it is a must to add to the bucket list of walkers and hikers, and those that love to be outside. There are seventy-one miles of the Appalachian trail in the Smoky Mountains National Park. A lot of people, as you might imagine, won’t be able to do it all, but the good news is that there are some trails that can be done in just one day. You could hike the trail from Newfound Gap Road which takes you to Clingmans Dome, which is around seven miles in total. If you have got some more energy and want to do some more, then you could try the hike to Silers Bald, which is just west from Clingmans Dome.

Loch Lomond and The Trossachs, Scotland

Scotland is one of the best places to pack up your tent, sleeping bag and cooler for camping. Not only is it home to some of the most beautifully rugged landscapes in the world, but it is also home to some of the friendliest people and some of the freest camping rules around. You can basically camp anywhere you like in Scotland as long as you respect the land and clear up after yourself, but the best place to camp there is undoubtedly the Loch Lomond and Trossachs area. Why? Because the lochs and glens are as stunning as they are romantic and there’s so much space that you could spend a whole week there barely seeing another camper. Oh, and if you’re lucky, you might even get to see the Northern Lights too.

Mount Cook National Park, New Zealand

If you’re looking for a picturesque place to pitch your tent, you could hardly do better than traveling to New Zealand with its landscapes to die for. Mount Cook National Park is a particular delight due to the fact it’s home to the highest mountain in the country, and an area so rugged that it’s perfect for rock climbing, exploring and simply just hanging out. The weather’s hard to beat too.

The Alps, France

France and camping go hand in hand, so it is not surprising that The Alps should make the list. What’s so special about them? Not only do they look amazing, but they are the perfect playground for hikers and campers in the spring and summer months when the snow has thawed, at least. In the winter, they’re amazing for skiing, and those beautiful clear night skies are the perfect accompaniment to a night under the stars!

Devon, England

If you’re looking for an English camping adventure, you have lots of options from the romantic beauty of the Lake District to the rugged peaks of the Peak District, but the craggy sea-swept cliffs of Devon are pretty hard to beat. Located on the Atlantic coast, Devon is the perfect place to pitch up if you enjoy sun, sea, and surf. If you come in August-October, you’ll see some truly amazing red sunsets over the horizon that won’t disappoint.

Skåne, Sweden

Sweden might not be the first place you think of when it comes to camping, but actually, the summer days there are long, bright and peaceful. The countryside is pretty and rolling and there are lots of very quiet, pretty pastoral places to pitch a tent and just be — Skåne is one of the best. If you love rustic woods, beautiful beaches, and sweeping landscapes, wild camping here will be a complete delight.

Almost everyone has a bucket list, and most people have a different ones for travel or adventure activities they want to achieve. But it is not very common that people add a visit to a volcano to their travel-plans. Perhaps, this might not be everyone’s idea of a vacation. But what it offers in terms of life-time experience with their sheer grandeur, mysterious beauty, and awe-inspiring majesty should have them make it to all of our bucket list at least once. That is why we have two ideas surround exciting volcanoes around the world to our Adventure Activities & Experiences Bucket list!

But with at least 1500 volcanoes around the world which ones are bucket list worthy? Well to help you figure that out, we’ve put together the most exciting ones for you down below. Who knows, maybe you’ll end up at the summit of one of these this year!

1) Taal Volcano, Philippines

In the wake of the recent eruptions at Taal Volcano on the 12th of January, volcanoes have come back into focus as a great travel destination for many. The unpredictability of these forces of nature can’t but inspire fear, mixed with awe in the hearts and excitement. Our hopes and prayers are that those affected by the volcanic eruptions may find life returning to normal soon and that economy may be revived quickly with tourists flocking to the recently erupted wonder.

Located on Taal Lake on Luzon island, the Taal Volcano has always been one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Philippines, until the recent eruption shut the place down. Horseback riding and hiking to the edge of the crater, as well as bathing and boating on the lake’s shores, are the activities there, beside the amusement parks, picnic groves, and picturesque hotels at the nearby town of Tagaytay.

2) Mount Teide, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

Mt. Teide is a great place to test the waters if you’re new to volcano-touring. It is a relatively safe spot and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its geological uniqueness. A cable-car ride and a 3 hour hike will get you right to the edge of the cauldron, but it is advisable you go early, to avoid the Spanish heat.

3) Mount Etna, Catania, Sicily, Italy

Here we’re going from a relatively safe spot to the most active volcano in the world, and the biggest in Europe. Its latest recorded eruption was in 2017, with continuous on-going activity even today. Seismic activity and dramatic smoke take exciting to a new level here, so you better be ready for the unexpected if you decide you want to visit this place!

4) Sakurajima, Kyushu, Japan

Sakurajima Volcano looks like an unimpressive mound of rock, but nothing can be further from the truth. This continuously erupting wonder is quite the show-stopper. The closest you can get to the crater is about two kilometers, and if you had any idea how active this volcano was, that’d be quite a safe distance! Sakurajima attracts a lot of visitors in the peak season since free thermal foot spas, lava trails and the children’s dinosaur park don’t sound like a bad idea to most.

5) Whakaari/White Island, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand

There is never a dull moment when nature puts its mind to something. Standing on the Whakaari Volcano will have you wondering whether you found ‘The Land Before Time’ What’s more- imagine you’d be standing on the tip of an island that remains submerged under the sea, for the most part, and what you’ll see all around you will be a bubbling, boiling, hissing, spitting combination of lakes of acid, thermal springs, boiling mud ponds, and stinking Sulphur.

 There will be no climbing involved, since you’re at the peak, anyway, and a helicopter ride can give you a great view of the island-volcano if a hike seems like too much trouble.

6) Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro National Park, Tanzania

This sleeping giant has earned a number of records for the books, most notably for being the highest mountain in Africa. It is an experience worth having, just to view the snow-capped mountain peak set against the African savannah. It is one for climbing enthusiast’s must-do list, as well as one for the photographer’s portfolio.

7) Vulcan del Totumo, Santa Catalina, Colombia

Columbia’s contribution to this list is as exciting as the country itself. El Totumo, as it is known to the locals is one of the smallest volcanoes here, and it is known for spewing out not lava, but geothermally heated mud that is supposed to be rich in a number of minerals. A mud-bath here is part of the deal and could turn into a full day tour.

8) Mount Fuji, Tokyo, Japan

This Japanese entry is reflective of the country’s grace and serene beauty. Though it hasn’t erupted in the last three hundred years, Mt. Fuji is still classified as an active volcano. But that doesn’t stop tourists from flocking to its hiking trail, joining thousands of pilgrims who scale the volcano as a Japanese religious ritual. It has also inspired artists and poets with its breathtaking beauty both in the summer, as well as in the winter when its snow-capped avatar continues to awe its visitors.

9) Mauna Loa & Kilauea, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii

Come to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park for a real volcanic experience. While we have heard of only wildlife conservation in national parks, Hawaii’s National Park is geared towards its prize volcanoes for conservation.

You can call yourself a real volcano enthusiast on these shores when you visit Mauna Loa, one of the biggest volcanoes in the world. Kilauea holds it’s own flame high, having been continuously active since the early 1980s. Stand back and watch as lava hits the sea and forms new land, or take an exciting drive around the crater, unless it’s too ‘volcanic’, or even book a lava flow pre-dawn or post-dark tour, when you can see the glowing rivers of lava at their brightest.

10) Kelimutu Volcano, Flores Island, Indonesia

Mt. Kelimutu on Flores Island is a jewel among volcanoes, literally. This unique group of active peaks enclose three distinct lake formations within their craters that change colour from glacial blue to green and mud-red to black, depending on the volcanic activity going on underneath. If there were only one volcanic spot you would visit in your lifetime, choose Mt. Kelimutu for this unique experience, as it may not be long before the still-active volcano erupts and reduces these jewel-lakes into photographic memories.

If you don’t believe me, then just attend a professional wrestling match and watch the crowd get unhinged! On the other hand, it is easy for us to see how dogs are often loyal, noble, and courageous creatures no matter how many clotheslines or leg drops occur! Perhaps, that is why people have been erecting famous dog statues around the world in their honor.

Now, I know this may upset a few of you, but currently the Junkyard Dog doesn’t have a statue in his honor. However, we did find 20 famous dog statues around the world that you are definitely going to want to add to your Travel Bucket List!

1) Greyfriars Bobby in Edinburgh, Scotland

The Story about the Famous Dog: Greyfriars Bobby

Greyfriars Bobby is probably one of the most famous dog statues in the world! This statue honors a small skye terrier who’s loyalty to his master even after death is truly amazing. The story goes that John Gray was a simple night watchman in Edinburgh who died and was buried in Greyfriars Churchyard. However, despite his death, the loyalty of this little dog did not waver. It is said that for the next 14 years, the terrier would stand guard over his master’s grave until he himself finally passed.

2) Hachiko in Shibuya, Tokyo

The Story about the Famous Dog: Hachiko

Probably one of the most famous dogs in all of Japan, Hachiko has a similar story of loyalty to his master. The story goes that this Akita was adopted by Hidesaburo Ueno, a professor from the University of Tokyo. Hachiko would follow his master to the Shibuya train station where he would wait for his return from school. This went on for about 2 years until tragically Hidesaburo had a brain hemorrhage at work and instantly died. But Hachiko did not waiver and waited for his master at the station for the next 10 years until he too finally died.

There are several dog monuments honoring Hachiko around Shibuya so chances are you are going to run into one of them. For example, there is a beautiful one titled “Hachiko Finally Meets His Master” located on the campus of the University of Tokyo by the Nogaku Museum. However the most famous one seen in the picture above can be found at the Shibuya Station.

Like Greyfriars Bobby there are several books and movies made about Hachiko and Hidesaburo. For those who want to read about him, we recommend, “Hachiko: The True Story of a Loyal Dog” by Pamela Turner.

With regards to movies, we found two that will introduce you to this amazing story. The first is a Japanese Film from 1987 titled “Hachi-ko” & another we found on Amazon Prime is from 2009 titled, “Hachi: A Dog’s Tale” starring Richard Gere.

3) Balto in Central Park, New York City, U.S.A.

The Story about the Famous Dog: Balto

Balto was a famous husky sled dog that led a team of dogs 674 miles from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. What makes this story even more amazing was that his sled mushed through a raging blizzard in the heart of winter in order to deliver life saving medicines to the children of Nome who were dealing with a deadly diphtheria epidemic.

But if you are looking for a book that is fun to read, check out “The Bravest Dog Ever : The True Story of Balto” by Natalie Standiford & Donald Cook. As for movies, you don’t have to look very far. Since 2016, Universal Studios has released 3 blockbuster animated movies about the Adventures of Balto! 4) Waghya in Maharashtra, India

The Story about the Famous Dog: Waghya

Waghya (which translates to “Tiger”) was a small mixed breed dog of the Indian Warrior King, Shivaji Maharaj. According to legend, when Shivaji finally died, Waghya mourned deeply. Then at the cremation of his former master, the small “Tiger”, offered himself up as a sacrifice to his former master and leapt to his death into the funeral pyre.

Interestingly, his legend is the center of some conflict in the area. Back in 2012 a group of 73 Maratha extremists stole the statue. They claimed that there is no truth to the story and it degrades Shivaji’s legacy. However, Waghya was later returned to his location beside Shivaji’s tomb.

Unless you are wildly racing the Rickshaw Run in India, you will most likely be visiting Waghya from the city of Pune or possibly Mumbai. Waghya along with Shivaji’s tomb can be found at Raigad Fort.

After much scouring, there isn’t much in terms of books or movies about Waghya. However, it you would like to learn more about the Raigad Fort where he is located we recommend starting with the Official Maharashtra Tourism Government Site.

5) Malchik in Moscow, Russia

The Story about the Famous Dog: Malchik

The story of Malchik (which translates to “Little Boy” in Russian) is somewhat a tragic one that ultimately brought the people of Moscow together. For about 3 years Malchik would hang out in the Mendeleyevskaya Station of the Moscow Metro. He seemed a playful and happy dog that befriended many of the regular travelers along with the local businessmen. However, one night a 22 year old woman by the name of Yuliana Romanova and her little dog got into a fight with Malchik. Yuliana would end up fatally stabbing the poor stray about 6 times and then running off.

Now here is where our tragic story becomes interesting. Most people would not even think twice over the death of a random stray dog. But the locals of Moscow, who had come to love this lost “Little Boy” became outraged. Yuliana was brought to trial, was found guilty of cruelty, and sentenced to a year of psychiatric treatment for schizophrenia. Then to make the story even better, tons of donations came in from around all of Russia to erect this beautiful statue to honor him.

The statue of Malchik can be found in the Mendeleevskaya Metro Station in Moscow.

Currently there isn’t much in terms of books or movies about Malchik. However, in 2019 Russia did release a Stamp entitled “Monument Compassion” which featured the famous dog statue of Malchik. (This was one of the few stamps Not used on Eric & Darcee’s Wedding Invitations!)

6) Sweet Willy & Toby in Cottonwood, Idaho

The Story about the Famous Dogs: Sweet Willy & Toby

Okay, so Sweet Willy is not officially a famous dog statue per se but Toby most definitely is as he stands nearly 12 feet high beneath his beagle brother! Sweet Willy on the other hand is a bed and breakfast that as of 2004 was the worlds biggest beagle reaching over 30 feet. Both of these wonderful roadside attractions are the creations of artists Dennis Sullivan and Frances Conklin.

Officially known as Dog Bark Park Inn, you can find these towering beagles in Cottonwood, Idaho just northeast of town, on the west side of US Hwy 95.

Well as of yet, there is no major motion picture about this crazy Bed & Breakfast. However, Frances Conklin did write a fun book called “Sweet Willy: A Noble & Absurd Undertaking“. This book not only shares the ideas behind & history of Dog Bark Park but it also talks about how two people came together to follow their own bucket list dreams and create a fun life together!

7) Islay in Sydney, Australia

The Story about the Famous Dog: Islay

Imagine sitting next to a beautiful fountain outside the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney, Australia, when you suddenly hear, “Hello, my name is Islay. I was once the companion of the great Queen Victoria. Because of the many good deeds I have done for deaf and blind children, I have been given the power of speech. If you cast a coin into the wishing well now, I will say thank you… Thank you. Woof, Woof!” That talking Skye Terrier is Islay, Queen Victoria’s favorite pooch.

Islay was a Queen Victoria’s dog for a mere 5 years until he tragically got mauled by a stray cat. However, the little dog must have made quite an impact on the Queen as she wrote of him fondly in her diary about how she loved how he stood on his hind legs begging for treats. (As portrayed in the statue).

How to Find the Famous Talking Dog Statue of Islay

To find Islay, you are going to want to head over to the Queen Victoria Building on George Street. There you will find a large life sized statue of the Grandmother of all Europe, Queen Victoria herself. But nearby you will find Islay. His fountain hides a ventilation shaft for a parking garage underneath the building.

There isn’t much at all about Islay except the writings in Queen Victoria’s Diary. However, there are tons of stories & books written about the Queen herself. Perhaps one of the more popular, is “Victoria: A Novel By Daisy Goodwin” in which Goodwin shares from the personal diaries of the Queen during her younger years. If you want to dive more into the life of the queen on TV, Daisy Goodwin’s book is also the basis for the PBS Drama: Victoria. I wonder who will portray Islay on the show?

8) The Brown Dog in Battersea Park, London

The Story about the Famous Dog: The Brown Dog of Battersea Park

So in reality there may or may not be an actual brown dog that this statue “honors.” However, the Brown Dog of Battersea Park has caused as much political strife in this London Community as Wagyha has in India. According to the story, around 1903, a University College of London (UCL) professor was accused of illegal and inhumane medical testing on a brown dog. He was later exonerated of all charges and even won a libel case against his accusers.

However, this did not thwart the community of Battersea. A progressive neighborhood in London, the community appalled by the actions of the Medical Students of UCL, erected a statue of the supposed Brown Dog with a scathing plaque attacking the University. This caused outrage among the medical students who would about a year later attempt to remove the statue and cause what is now known as the Brown Dog Riots! This would go on for several years between the students and the community of Battersea until the town council finally agreed to remove the statue and have it destroyed.

Then in 1985, a new Brown Dog statue was erected along with the original scathing plaque attacking the University College of London.

The original Brown Dog Statue was located in the Latchmere Recreation Grounds. However the “New” Brown Dog Statue can be found in the Old English Garden of Battersea Park by the Pump House near Carriage Drive.

There is a book by Joe Cain titled, “The Brown Dog in Battersea Park” that tells the story of the whole Brown Dog Riots and the challenge of Animal Rights versus Medical Advancements.

9) Fala in Washington, D.C. USA

The Story about the Famous Dog: Fala

It is not often we hear about an American President and his pet but Fala was Frankin D Roosevelt’s (FDR) side kick. It was said that the 32nd President took the little black Scottish terrier everywhere, especially throughout his World War II fundraising efforts. However, Fala, like most in the political eye, was not without scandal. During Roosevelt’s 1944 presidential campaign, Republicans charged that FDR had accidentally left Fala behind on the Aleutian Islands while on tour there. They accused the president of sending a U.S. Navy destroyer to retrieve his little dog at an exorbitant cost to the taxpayers.

After FDR passed away, Fala attended Roosevelt’s funeral and went to live with the widowed former First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. During that time Eleanor wrote a newspaper column titled, “My Day”, where she often referenced her adventures with the little rascal.

How to Find the Famous Dog Statues of Fala

There are actually 3 different famous dog statues of Fala in different parts of the United States. The first can be found at Puerto Rico’s “Paseo de los Presidentes” in San Juan. The second of the famous dog statues is inside the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park, NY. There you can also find Fala’s collar, dog dish, White House dog tags and other artifacts on display. However, the most famous of the dog statues of Fala is at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Though not solely the star of his own book, Fala is featured in the book, “Dogs of War : The Stories of FDR’s Fala, Patton’s Willie, and Ike’s Telek” by Kathleen Kinsolving. In this book, Kathleen shares wonderful stories and photos of all three dogs as they battle against the facists of Europe!

10) Gelert in Beddgelert, Wales, U.K.

The Story about the Famous Dog: Gelert

If you love legends or fables then the story of Gelert is bound to be one of your favorites. According to legend, the Prince of North Wales, Llywelyn returns from hunting to find his baby missing, the crib flipped over, and blood smeared all over the snout of Gelert. Llywelyn instantly draws his sword and stabs poor Gelert to death. As soon as he does this, he then hears the crying of his young baby under the crib and next to it, the corpse of a dead wolf who had snuck in and attacked the child. In his dismay, Llywelyn realizes that Gelert had not attacked the child but rather saved him from the fangs of the wolf! To atone for his rash actions, Llywelyn buries Gelert with a royal ceremony and legend has it he never smiled again!

Gelert has two monuments to honor the courageous dog in Beddgelert, Wales. The first one has two slate memorials, one in Welsh and the other in English. Another is a Bronze statue of the dog nearby along the banks of The Glaslyn River.

There are many great stories that reference the story of Llywelyn and Gelert. Probably the best one for readers of all ages is “The Faithful Dog Gelert (Tales from Wales)“ by Myrddin ap Dafydd. Also there is a great animated movie that was released in 2010 entitled, “Gelert” that though in Welsh does come with English subtitles.

11) Rover in Hartford, Connecticut

The Story about the Famous Dog: Rover

According to legend, a man went with his dog Rover to the Hartford Connecticut Hospital after he had just suffered a heart attack. As he walked in, he told his dog to “Stay” and the dog sat outside waiting for his master to return. Unfortunately, the man never recovered and later died in the hospital. However, Rover never budged from his spot waiting for his master to return. Many of the hospital staff encouraged Rover to leave and even during bad weather tried to take the dog home. However, Rover remained devoted to the end of his life.

12) The Sheepdog of Canterbury, New Zealand

The Story about the Famous Dog: The Collie Sheep Dog

The story of the Collie Sheep Dog of Canterbury is more of a mutt memorial to all the amazing sheep herding Collies who helped on the farms the McKenzie country region.

However, an interesting side story is how the area got its name McKenzie Country. Apparently, in March 1855, an immigrant by the name of James Mckenzie was caught stealing 1,000 sheep. He alluded authorities for a while but was later sentenced to five years hard labor after being found guilty. A regular Billy the Kid, McKenzie escaped from prison at least twice but finally was chained in irons and guarded nonstop. Then after spending 9 months in jail, a judge re-opened his case, decided he was actually innocent, and pardoned him.

There isn’t much about the Collie Sheepdog specifically, but you can always find stories about the area’s famous outlaw, James McKenzie. In 1977, there was even a short lived TV Miniseries called, “The Mackenzie Affair“. In terms of books, they come a little hard to find but the tv miniseries is based off a book of the same name by James McNeish.

13) Constantine (aka Kostya) of Tolyatti, Russia

In 1995 a German Shepherd was been riding in a car with a man and a girl. The car crashed and the girl was killed on the spot. The man was taken to a hospital where a few hours later he also died. The German Shepherd was apparently left at the crash site and there he waited for his owners to return and retrieve him. It is said that he would anxiously run up to cars looking for his owners but to no avail. Since no one knew his name, people called him “Kostya” which translates to faithful or steadfast. For the next 7 years, the locals tried to coax him to leave or even adopt him but he refused, waiting “faithfully” for his actual owners to return. Then in 2002, his body was found in a nearby woods.

Despite much searching, there aren’t any books or movies about “Kostya.” However, in 2013, a Moscow musician named Cat Sasha released a song entitled “Watchdog” on her album Intercity Traveler.

According to history, the indigenous people of the Canary Islands, the Guanches, had a rare breed of dog, called canem in Latin or Canarian hounds in English. They primarily used these dogs for hunting and were quite revered by the Gaunches and over time became the symbol of the Islands. When the Spanish arrived they were amazed by the amount of Canarian hounds and thus the islands were named for the dogs.

In general there isn’t much about the famous Canarian Hounds themselves, though author Goldeen Ogawa does feature the dogs in his Fantasy book, “Professor Odd: The Dogs of Canary Island“. With regards to movies or t.v. again there isn’t anything about the dogs. However, we did discover that the Canary Islands have been the featured back drop of many great movies including: Moby Dick (starring Gregory Peck), One Million Years B.C. (starring Raquel Welch), Fast & the Furious 6 (starring Vin Diesel & the Late Paul Walker), & Jason Bourne (starring Matt Damon) to name a few.

15) Morley’s Dog in Johnstown, Pennsylvania

In 1889, a dam burst in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and virtually destroyed the entire city. However, when James Morley returned to his flooded home amid the destruction he found his old metal dog lawn ornament still intact. So he took the old dog to the park and put it on display to inspire his neighbors. Much like what the Fleur de Lis symbol became to the locals of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, this old metal dog became a symbol of rebirth to the citizens Johnstown.

After 100+ years of dealing with the elements and all the kids attempting to ride him, the original metal dog lawn ornament was taken away for preservation by the Johnstown Area Heritage Association. 16) Zinneke Pis in Brussels, Belgium

Zinneke Pis (also known as Het Zinneke) is one of three “Pissing” statues scattered throughout Brussels. Manneken Pis is the first one created by Hiëronymus Duquesnoy the Elder around 1619. It depicts a naked little boy urinating into a fountain’s basin. Then in 1985, a Mr. Denis-Adrien Debouvrie, had Jeanneke Pis created as a way to leave his legacy in his neighborhood. The statue was created showcasing a little girl with her hair in short pigtails, squatting and urinating on stone that dribbles into a fountain.

That brings us to our famous dog statue. In 1998, famous Brussels scupltor, Tom Frantzen, decided to honor his own dog by creating a lifelike statue of him in his own neighborhood. Unlike it’s two predecessors, Zinneke Pis doesn’t actually pee. Oddly enough, in 2015 it was hit by a car but Tom restored it to its former glory!

Manneken Pis is relatively easy to find at the junction of Rue du Chêne/Eikstraat and the pedestrian Rue de l’Étuve/Stoofstraat. Whereas, Jeanneke Pis is a bit harder to find. She is located on the east side of Impasse de la Fidélité/Getrouwheidsgang (Fidelity Alley), a narrow cul-de-sac near Rue des Bouchers/Beenhouwersstraat. Sadly, she has been vandalized so she is protected behind iron bars. While, Zinneke Pis is also somewhat easy to find as he is located at the junction of Rue des Chartreux/Kartuizersstraat and Rue du Vieux-Marché-aux-Grains/Oude Graanmarkt.

Since Zinneke Pis was more of a homage to Tom Frantzen‘s dog, there is really nothing more about him in other mediums. However, the original, Manneken Pis has made cameos in several movies including 1986 Tom Hanks Movie, “The Money Pit“. In the movie, Hanks’ character crashes out a window, down his roof, into a wheel barrel, that rolls down a hill and ultimately into a fountain where a Manneken Pis replica pees on him.

17) Shep in Fort Benton, Montana

One day in 1936, a sheep herding dog appeared alongside a casket at the Fort Benton Train Station in Montana. Apparently, his master had died and his casket was loaded onto a train heading east back to his family. However, despite the train leaving the dog remained. For almost 6 years, he would greet every train that would roll in hoping to see his master climb off the car. During those years, the dog was given the name Shep by the station employees. Many people took care of him and he became well known to everyone who passed through. Then in 1942, sadly, Shep slipped onto the tracks before an oncoming train and was killed instantly. A few days later a massive funeral service was put on for Shep by the local Boy Scout Troop 47, The Great Northern Railroad, and everyone in Fort Benton.

There are two mutt monuments honoring Shep in Fort Benton. The first is at his grave on the hillside overlooking the town where there is a painted steel Shep cut out surrounded by lights. However, in town near the Missouri River, is a bronze sculpture erected in 1994 by Bob Scriver.

Shep has had his moment in pop culture. While he was still alive, he actually made it into a syndicated column in newspapers around the world in a Ripley’s Believe It Or Not comic. But in recent years, he was featured in “Shep: Our Most Loyal Dog” by Sneed B. Collard and Joanna Yardley.

18) Dzok in Krakow, Poland

A black mutt known as Dzok (pronounced Jock) is often considered “the most faithful friend ever” to the citizens of Krakow, Poland. According to his legend, in the mid 1990’s, Dzok’s first owner left one day only to suffer a heart attack and die. But Dzok waited patiently for one year outside for his master to return. The locals of Krakow felt for Dzok and some even tried to adopt him but he would not budge. Then, after constantly tending to him and feeding him, a widow named Maria Müller finally convinced Dzok to move in with her. However, in 1998 Maria also died and Dzok was taken to a pound. Somehow, though he escaped and made his way to the railyard where he was tragically struck by a train.

If you are in Krakow, the famous dog statue of Dzok is located on the Czerwonański Boulevard on the Vistula River in Kraków , near the Wawel Castle and the Grunwald Bridge.

After searching the web, there were no major television shows or movies that reference Dzok. However, we did find a cute looking children’s book by famed Polish author Barbara Gawryluk. The only catch is her book, titled, “Dzok: Legenda o Psiej Wiernoski,” which translates to “Dzok: A Legend About Dog Fidelity,” is in fact in Polish.

19) Fido in Florence, Italy

In case you didn’t know, Fido in latin actually means “I am Faithful.” So, it is not just a silly name for a dog made famous in the United States when Abraham Lincoln named his dog Fido. However, “faithful” definitely fits for Fido of Florence, Italy.

As the story goes, Fido was originally a wild dog running the streets of a small town known as Luco di Mugello. One day a brick layer named Carlo was returning from work. At the bus stop, he saw the dog injured in a nearby ditch. So, he picked up the dog, took him home, and he along with his wife nursed the dog back to health. They would then later name him Fido.

Healthy, Fido would every day wake up and follow Carlo to the bus stop in the central square of Luco di Mugello. Then he would sit in the square quietly awaiting his master to return from work on the evening bus. When Carlo exited the bus, it is said that Fido would greet him with joy and excitement! This went on for two years.

Then on December 30, 1943, in the midst of World War II, Carlo’s factory was bombed by Ally Forces and he died. That evening Fido sat at the bus stop waiting for Carlo to return but his master never came. He apparently then returned home to see if Carlo was there but could not find him. Then he returned the next day to the same bus stop to see if Carlo would ever come off the bus. This went on for a remarkable 14 years until his death on June 9, 1958. In case your counting, Fido went to that bus stop to find Carlo nearly 5,110 times!

There doesn’t seem to be many modern books or movies about Italy’s most faithful dog. But after much scouring, we did find and amazing scenes from an actual Newsreel from 1957 about Fido, from the Istituto Luce on YouTube. Fair warning it is in Italian but you will understand the story. Fido was also featured in the April 1, 1957 edition of Time Magazine under the story, “ITALY: Fido”

20) Bobbie the Wonder Dog of Silverton, Oregon

We have all heard the legend of a dog who takes an incredible journey back home to find his family. Well, the story of Bobbie the Wonder Dog is not a legend but actual fact. In August of 1923, Frank and Elizabeth Brazier, took their daughters along with their 2 year old Scottish Collie on a family road trip to Wolcott, Indiana. Along the way, the family stopped for gas and there at the station little Bobbie was attacked by 3 other dogs and ran away. After hours of searching, the Brazier family was unable to find Bobbie. They continued their trip to see their family in Indiana and then returned home to Oregon, expecting never to see their dog again.

Then 6 months later, on February 15, 1924, miraculously, Bobbie came hobbling back into Silverton. He looked a disaster with his toenails noticeably worn down to the nubs. According to the data, this little Scottish terrier walked at least 2,551 miles (4,105 km). He traversed across harsh terrain, swam across wild rivers, and hiked over the mountains of the Continental Divide all while managing to survive an extremely harsh winter.

There are actually several murals painted on the sides of many of the businesses in Silverton, Oregon honoring Bobbie’s incredible journey. But the famous Dog Statue and dog house are downtown, on the west side of S. Water Street a block south of East Main St.

Like Shep in Montana, Bobbie too made it into syndicated column in newspapers around the world in a Ripley’s Believe It Or Not comic right after his incredible journey. Then a short time later, he would even star as himself in the 1924 silent short film about his trek back home called, “The Call of the West“. But in recent years, the story of Bobbie the Wonder Dog fell silent until a book by Susan Stelljes titled, “Wonder Dog: The Story of Silverton Bobbie” was released.

Hiking is one of the best ways to explore the natural beauty of the landscape while getting fit. Here are some tips on how you can make sure you stay safe on your hiking trip.

Get Prepared

Preparation is key. If you’re planning to go to a national park, make sure that you talk to a ranger first about what to expect. They will be happy to have this conversation – they want you to stay safe and they don’t want any mishaps in their area. Make sure that you are aware of any difficult areas, of any places you should avoid, of local weather conditions, of animals that you might encounter, and so on. After all, fore-warned is fore-armed. It isn’t a good idea to go hiking alone, particularly if you aren’t used to it, so make sure you take a friend along. Even if there’s more than one person, make sure that you leave your itinerary with someone and that they know when you expect to be back, so they can send out the alarm if you’re late.

Carry The Essentials With You

You should invest in a light-weight pack so that you can take essential items with you when you hike. First and foremost, water is key. Take a reusable bottle with you – you should be drinking half to one liter of water per hour when you’re walking, so take plenty of water with you, along with water purification tablets or a filtration system if you anticipate needing more water than you want to carry. Carry snacks with you that are lightweight and that will give you plenty of energy, and take more than you will need for just one day. A first aid kit is key: take antiseptic wipes, bandages, medical tape, blister plasters, allergy pills, and any medication that you may need (including for the next day, just in case). Materials to light a fire are essential – if you get lost you can use it to signal for help. Look online for the best ferro rod – these are better than matches as it doesn’t matter what weather it is. You should also take sunscreen with you along with items of clothing that you can wear to cover up like a hat and a collared long sleeved shirt, along with a lightweight fold-up rain jacket that you can use if the weather turns. A space blanket is a good idea – not only can they be used to keep warm, but they are also reflective and can be used if you get lost.

Buy Good Quality Boots And Socks

When you’re hiking it’s essential that you have good quality boots and socks. You need to get footwear that fits you properly and that cushions your feet. These will protect your ankles if you trip over, and they will also prevent you from getting blisters if they fit you correctly. Get them fitted at an outdoor supplies store, and make sure you break them in around the house and on local trips to the store before you undertake any big adventures. You should also wear thick hiking socks instead of cotton ones. Hiking socks will wick moisture away from your skin and keep your feet dry.

Stay On The Trail

Finally, it is absolutely essential that you stay on the trail. There are documented cases of people getting lost and going missing after stepping just a few feet off the trail – it’s so easy to get disoriented and to walk in the wrong direction, even if you’re just stepping away to use the bathroom. If you get lost or hurt, it will be a lot easier for people to find and rescue you if you keep to the trail – and a lot safer and cheaper to get you home. The terrain off the trail might look perfectly safe but there are often hidden dangers that you might not see – nature is beautiful but it’s also dangerous and unpredictable and you need to avoid any issues so that you get home safe at the end of your trip. You may be an avid hiker who really knows what to do and what not to do but you still need to know your limits – and no matter how good you are, you are limited to staying on the trail.

Hiking is a fun activity that’s great for you so long as you stay safe: stick to the trail, take the right items with you, and most of all: enjoy. Salt Lake City, Utah

Utah hosts some of the top skiing destinations in the nation as well. By basing yourself in Salt Lake City, you’ll be just a 40-minute drive from Park City Mountain Resort, which hosted the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. It boasts over 7,300 skiable acres as the largest ski and snowboard resort in the entire country. Snowbird Ski Resort is only 45 minutes away and is a locals’ favorite with especially long ski seasons, while nearby Alta is for skiers only, providing a more traditional experience.

South Lake Tahoe, California

You’ll be spoiled for choice in South Lake Tahoe, with the Heavenly Ski Resort gondola leaving right from the center of town to bring you to some of the best skiing in the U.S. It’s the largest resort in a region filled with them, and you can even ski in two states as it straddles the California and Nevada border. Laid-back skiing is available 100 miles east at Soldier Mountain and world-famous Sun Valley is less than three hours away for fun weekend ski trips.

So with these four cities, it is easy to see why the United States has great ski destinations to keep you shredding for years. Tennessee is one of the states that just isn’t on many people’s hit list. It’s not common for people to chose it as a location, simply because there are so many areas surrounding it that take the limelight. But Tennessee is good for so many different things, whether you’re looking for a bit of adventure or not. If you’re looking for something a little different and away from the norm of what people would usually do when visiting Tennessee, you should have a look at the most popular activities to do in Pigeon Forge. From farms to rodeos, it has it all! But then you should also be thinking about visiting the Jack Daniels distillery. It’s one of the most popular drinks in the state, and for good reason. We Loved Yellowstone and it’s somewhere you definitely have on your Bucket List. In fact, we would recommend visiting it sooner rather than later, because this is an dormant volcano that could come back to life at any minute. When it does burst back to life, it threatens to end all civilization, that’s how big this volcano is. But for the minute, it’s a dormant beauty that attracts the attention of so many each year. You’d never be able to explore it all, but there are some key areas where outdoor activities, and guided walks happen. We know this isn’t a state as such, but this natural beauty is so big that it might as well be.

Crazy Las Vegas

Everyone knows the reputation that Las Vegas had, and we didn’t think it would be right to do a post about the wild sides of America, without talking about the wildest part of it. If you go there, we would recommend only going for a couple of nights, simply because it can be overwhelming. It’s always “go, go, go” with this place, and the money you spend can be tremendous. But once you’ve explored some of the many wonders that Las Vegas has to offer, you should definitely try and order a helicopter tour of the area, focusing on the natural wonder that is the Grand Canyon!

When the majority of us go away, we book up in luxury hotels or Airbnbs which provide home comforts. The more appliances on offer, the more appealing an accommodation option might seem. That’s no surprise considering that many of us go away to chill out. For some, even the idea of doing laundry during that luxury week is too much.

Sadly, easy trips like these don’t always make it onto the bucket list. They’re nice, for sure, but they don’t exactly create lifelong memories. When you look back in fifty years, the chances are that the majority of your hotel trips will blur into one. But, that’s never going to happen if you introduce activity to your bucket list with a wilderness trip.

A whole host of locations across the world offer wilderness opportunities even Bear Grylls would be jealous of. Whether you want to hike in the Scottish highlands or opt for outdoor adventures in Turkey, you can bet these are the kinds of trips you’ll remember until your dying day.

No wilderness exploration comes without risk, especially if you’re going it alone. That’s why the last part of your plan should be to tell someone about your trip in detail. It may even be worth giving them a copy of your itinerary so that they always know how you’re getting on. By arranging to phone them at set stops along the way, you make sure that they know you’re safe at all times. If you’re as little as a day late phoning, they can then contact the authorities in the area you’re in at the time. That ensures you’re never left in a dangerous situation for long. If you fall or otherwise hurt yourself, that person will come to the rescue sharpish.
