Go Fishing with the Fellas

What better place to go fishing than to one of Hemingway’s favorite locations! That is right, Big Papa loved Wyoming and would often head out on trout fishing expeditions in the Big Horns! That is probably because Sheridan has such an avid fly fishing scene.

When going on a fishing trip with the guys, start out at the Fly Shop of the Big Horns in Downtown Sheridan. These guys are great because they stock the store with the largest selection of flies and fly-tying materials around. Now of course you can always go on your own into Big Horn National Forest or other areas. But make sure you get your licenses in order at the Wyoming Game & Fish Department before you leave. There is something truly amazing about a guys trip where you go hiking and camping. So, it is a no-brainer that Sheridan, Wyoming is a major destination for male bonding while getting outdoors. That is because the Bighorn National Forest is absolutely beautiful and packed with tons of things to do. 

Now, if all you want to do is set up camp and make s’mores then the beauty of the Bighorns alone is inviting. But if you and your crew love to hike then get ready for some amazing things to find and explore. That is because the park consists of over one million acres of scenic canyons and mountains. 

Plus there are some cool things to do in the Bighorns like finding the 5 “secret” waterfalls scattered throughout the park. For the most part, finding these waterfalls make up a day trip type of adventure with your gang. But don’t let that fool you because even though it is barely a 1-mile round trip, even the amazing Porcupine Falls drops down 440 feet! Other nearby falls that are a bit longer to get to but definitely worth the trek are Paradise or Bucking Mule Falls!

Fun Fact: When visiting the Big Horns make sure you check out the Tongue River Canyon! It is perhaps the most beautiful canyon in all of Wyoming. Within the canyon is of course the Tongue River where it is said that to beat traffic, loggers would ride the 11-mile Tongue River Tie Flume down the mountain and through the Box Canyon tunnels to reach the town of Dayton. See some Art with your Amigos

When you travel to foreign countries like Colombia, you almost expect to spend a day exploring street art in places like Cartagena. But if you and your friends like walking around checking out murals and pieces of western art, then Sheridan won’t disappoint. In 2001, the Grinnell Plaza project funded and then displayed over 100 permanent pieces of art throughout the downtown. So it is a treat to walk around with your crew amid what is known as the Sheridan Public Arts! Then afterwards as you are walking around downtown at night, be sure to check out the amazing display of neon lights. The glow from neon upon all of the classic buildings alone is an art lover’s dream.

Now for those guys who prefer walking amid various styles of art in a gallery, you can find some amazing displays at the Brinton Museum in Big Horn. Here you will be greeted with some of the finest art and artifacts from American Indians in the region. Plus, the original owner, Bradford Brinton collected beautiful works. Fun Fact: In nearby Clearmont, the UCROSS Foundation is a 20,000-acre working cattle ranch in northeastern Wyoming. But what is really cool is that it also operates as a retreat for visual artists, writers, composers, and artists in all creative disciplines. Plus for those of guys who love Longmire, the author, Craig Johnson, uses the hills of his Ucross home as inspiration for his crime drama novels.

Play some Games with the Gang

As you can see there is no shortage of things to do in Sheridan, Wyoming. But perhaps one of the coolest things to do with your guys is to and play some fun games. Now of course you can always go shoot pool or throw darts in the Rainbow Bar or toss corn hole at some of the beer halls.  But if you want to have a real adventure you should bring your gang over to the Big Horn Axe to throw axes! Since early 2020, they have been “throwing blades” as they put it and it is truly an event. The staff will set you up with their computerized scoring which is much like a bowling game. Then, off you go to test your skills at throwing various hatchets!

Now for those who are into more bizarre-type activities, nearby at the Koltiska Distillery, you can test your skills at Butt Darts! From what we gather, you drop as many quarters from your rear into a shot glass placed on the floor in order to “Win!” So have fun trying to win Butt Darts on your next guy’s trip. At least at the distillery, there is no shortage of Cowboy Coolaid!

Go Biking with your Brothers

There is something truly iconic about riding a motorcycle across America and there is no shortage of amazing motorcycle rides in and around Sheridan, Wyoming. So whether you are riding the winding roads towards Bighorn National Forest or you are hitting the open road down towards Clearmont, you’ll love the views. But perhaps some of the most fun rides are those heading to Dayton and Ranchester. Here you will cruise through small communities that time forgot and stop at some iconic bars and restaurants. For many, a stop-off at the Historic Dayton Mercantile for lunch is one of the best bucket list experiences ever. The old Mercantile is still operational and offers amazing plate lunches inside at their old counter. Fair warning though, make sure you and your boys are respectful. The ladies working the counter at the Mercantile take no flack from any road warrior!

Attend a Polo Match with your Pals

It may sound weird to attend a real-life polo match in Wyoming. But it is truly an awesome experience for any guy’s trip. The Big Horn Equestrian Center has been in operation for more than 100 years now and allows people to come in and watch both training and matches during the season. Set upon 60 acres, the beautiful grounds are well-groomed beneath the Big Horn Mountains. But the highlight is seeing some of the most beautiful horses in the world as their riders play to win! Then to boot, there are a plethora of events on the grounds. Depending on the time of year, you can enjoy music festivals, soccer matches, or even an epic fireworks show. 

Fun Fact: It is said that many famous people can often be seen at the Polo Grounds during the official season. For example, Joan Rivers was a long time fan of Wyoming & the sport of Polo. In fact, it is said that she loved both so much that after she died, she gave a last request: “please have my ashes scattered where the buffalo roam and where the polo mallets whirl…” (source: Tall Tales by Sheridan Board of Tourism)

Get your Chums Classed Up

Sometimes you want to roll out like the Rat Pack on a guy’s trip. So if you need to turn your guys from Neanderthals to high-class gentlemen, then head to downtown Sheridan. Here you will find a plethora of stores like King’s Ropes & Saddlery, where they can purchase some nice clothes or find great accessories. But perhaps one of the neatest things to do is to head over to the White Swan Barber Shop where you and your gang can get a haircut and a classic straight razor shave in one of the oldest continually operating barbershops in the country!

Afterward, you and your gang of gentlemen can hit the town. So, of course, that would mean a stop at the historic Mint Bar. Founded in 1907, this timeless bar is laden with historical pictures and various animals mounted on its walls. Even Hemingway himself ponied up to the bar drinking while writing A Farewell to Arms. To boot, during prohibition, the Mint Bar pretended to be a cigar company and soda shop in the front while they ran a speakeasy out of the back.

Take your Friends to the Fort

There is something about learning American History that just seems to fit a true guy’s trip. That is why a trip to Fort Phil Kearny just south of Sheridan is a perfect day adventure to go on. It is an interesting interactive site. What is really cool is that you can learn about the Indian Wars. Plus they offer insights into the struggles of the early pioneers traveling along the Bozeman Trail. On a beautiful day, you can walk the original grounds amid the reconstructed stockade and imagine the battles the army had with the local Native American tribes while living there. 

Enjoy Adult Beverages with your Brothers

Ernest Hemingway once said, “I drink to make other people more interesting.” Hopefully, this isn’t the case when wanting to celebrate with your friends on an epic guy’s trip. But just in case, there are a ton of great options for the guys to meet up for adult beverages. 

For those of you who love beer, then look no further than downtown Sheridan. With major establishments like Black Tooth Brewing you are bound to find a beer you enjoy. Plus they are right around the corner from the Big Horn Axe company. However, you may want to wait to toss back a few before tossing sharp weapons near your boys. If you are willing to try something new and a bit smaller, the local style brewery of Smith Alley Brewing and Public House offers not only excellent beer but a great menu of food to pair with your suds.

For the guys who consider themselves cocktail connoisseurs, you don’t have to fret. Of course, Wyoming is known for its beer but the cocktail scene in Sheridan is growing nicely. Of course, you can always sit at Frackleton’s bar and enjoy their Happy Specials on drinks. But perhaps the best secret in Sheridan is at McGregor’s Bar & Grille. This place has some of the best cocktails in all of Wyoming. But what is also awesome is that you can sit outside beneath the most beautiful views of the Bighorns!

There’s no denying that camping is a great way to experience the great outdoors. However, camping isn’t for everyone, so what can you do if you want to go on a family camping trip, but one of your group would rather stay in a hotel?

One option is to compromise and have a more luxurious camping adventure. Glamping, as the term is known, has risen in popularity in recent years. The following are some essential items you need to create the ultimate luxury camping adventure for you and your group:

1. Off-Road Camper

There’s undoubtedly plenty of camping sites that you can visit that offer amenities such as electrical hook-ups, shower and washing facilities, and entertainment venues. However, if you want to experience a true camping adventure, you would go off the beaten track.

Camping in a remote location offers plenty of peace and tranquility, along with much scope for exploring. You should consider hybrid campers as you want something that will endure moving across rugged terrain than a traditional RV.

Hybrid campers also offer better shelter and protection from the elements than pitching up an ordinary tent.

2. Generator

When you go on a luxury camping trip, you will undoubtedly want to enjoy the luxuries of home such as electricity, heating and cooling, and cooking facilities. With some items, you can use gas to power your appliances.

You need an electricity source for everything else – something that’s hard to come by in the middle of the wilderness. That’s why it makes sense to take a portable generator with you. The good news is many diesel or gasoline generators are quiet in operation.

3. Satellite TV

Once you’ve spent the day exploring, you’d like nothing more than to sit back and relax. However, enjoying the silence of your remote outpost or reading a book will only get you so far before boredom ensues.

With that in mind, consider taking a satellite TV system with you for your luxury camping trip. You can easily position your satellite dish using a handy satellite finder gadget, and when you connect it to a small LED TV, you can soon enjoy your favorite TV programming.

4. Cushions, Blankets, and Pillows

The days of sleeping inside a sleeping bag on a rock-hard surface are gone. There’s no reason why you can enjoy a restful night’s sleep lying on a bed of cushions, covering yourself with soft wool blankets, and laying your head down on comfortable pillows.

It’s even possible to take a roll-up mattress and a quick-assembly bed so that you don’t have to brave the cold by sleeping on ground level.

5. Portable Refrigerator

While cool boxes are great for keeping things chilled, you need to place some ice packs inside them to ensure cold temperatures for as long as possible. Thankfully, that’s not a problem you need to consider if you take a portable refrigerator with you.

You’ll need a power source for it, of course, such as a diesel or gas generator. But, your food and drink will always get kept cold, just like at home.

One of our favorite parts of our Personal Growth Bucket list is all the fun books we want to read. This is especially true of item 210) Read Books of Fables because we get to to live in the world of fairy tales like the Brothers Grimm used to tell stories about! But is it possible to actually find those enchanting forests filled with fairies, dwarfs, and magic?

Well sadly, thanks to farming in lowland areas, walking through a rich, thick forest is a rarity these days. Most of the countryside is fields. But it turns out that there are still magical forests in the world. And the best bit? You can actually go there.

New Forest, UK

The New Forest in the UK was the country’s first national park and a popular destination for the crowds leaving London for vacation. It’s called a “forest” but, technically, that just means a range the monarch uses for hunting. In the past, kings didn’t have access to the best hog hunting lights, so they used dogs instead. But today, the park is open to the public and is no longer the sole property of the monarch. 

There’s still plenty of woodland here, much of it ancient. So if you go into some parts of the forest, you’ll immediately find yourself in an enchanting place, full of wonder and mystery.

Seoraksan National Park, South Korea

If you’re looking for somewhere a little more mountainous, you might want to check out the Seoraksan National Park in South Korea. This impressive natural woodland carpets the Taebaek mountain range, with the tree line extending to almost 1,700 meters in places. When you travel to the region, you get the strong impression that you have arrived in a deeply spiritual location. It’s a great place to spend the night camping if you have time. 

Wudang, China

Wudang in China is one of the homes of taoism – a religion that believes in being at one with nature. The setting for such a religion could not be better. The Wudang mountains rumble on for dozens of miles and in virtually every valley, there is thick woodland to explore. Many of the trails and paths through the region are centuries old, worn down by generations of monks over the centuries. So if you walk around at night, it is strongly recommended that you carry an Outdoor LED Lantern. Even a smaller Rechargeable Camping Lantern can help you avoid the things that go bump in the night! Additionally, capping some of the peaks, are temples and monasteries which you can visit in person. 

Bamboo Forest, Kyoto

And it offers beautifully manicured walkways, allowing you to travel between the giant bamboo plants unimpeded. 

Gorbea National Park, Spain

The Gorbea National Park is an area of outstanding natural beauty in Spain’s Basque region. Much of the area is covered in forest, but in the middle of the park is Gorbea – a 1,482-meter mountain. People who travel to the area love hiking up Gorbea and observing the interesting colors and shapes of the trees and the forest floor. The park offers waterfalls, lush vegetation and beautiful wild animals. 

Homebush Bay, Australia

Homebush Bay is the most interesting addition to this list. It’s essentially a forest on the outskirts of Sydney with a century-old shipwreck just next to it, home to trees and shrubs of its own. It’s a one-of-a-kind place, but also relatively small, so you’ll want to combine a trip with other activities.

With that in mind, here are some of our top tips to help you ensure your next camping trip goes off without a hitch.

Take your Camping Trip off the beaten track

One of the things that can really ruin a camping trip for a lot of adventurous sorts is, sad to say, other people. If you hit up a popular campsite, chances are there will be a lot of other people there, and although many o them will be totally chill and a lot of fun to get to know, some won’t. So, if you want to be sure that you’ll have an amazing time, without being interrupted by jerks or forced to tone it down because there’s a sweet family camping right across from you, take it off the beaten track and find the remotest (safe) spot to camp you can.

Wild camping is so much more exciting because you’re more isolated, the nature around you is often more rugged, and there’s always a sense that anything can happen, It’s something everyone should try at least once.

Don’t forget to pack the essentials

You might want your backpack to be as light as possible because let’s face it, it’s no fun carrying around the equivalent to a small adult on your back, but that doesn’t mean you can skimp on the essentials. As well as packing enough clothing suitable for all weather conditions, including waterproof clothing and shoes, you should also ensure that you have a decent flashlight and plenty of 18650 button top battery supplies so that you’re never without light. You’ll also want to make sure you have a decent water filter so that you can always have access to a drink, and a first aid kit just in case. You can probably work the rest out for yourself.

Don’t get lost

Getting lost can lead to lots of awesome and unexpected bucket list adventures and the stumbling upon hidden gems, but it can also get you killed, so be sure to have a map and compass as well as your phone’s GPS on you at all times, just in case.

Don’t let your food let you down

Just because you’re camping does not mean that you can’t enjoy a veritable feast every evening. These days, it’s perfectly easy to purchase vacuum packs that you can fill with lots of delicious pre-marinated meats or tofu if you prefer. Not only that, but portable camp stoves are getting smaller all the time, so taking one along has never been easier. That being said, there’s nothing like cooking your meat right over the campfire for that smoky BBQ taste. 

Oh, and don’t forget the drinks, make room for a cooler, and bring along lots of good wine and beer and it will feel like a five-star vacation even if you are out in the wildest of wilds.

Turn the tech off

Okay, so you’re going to want to document your awesome adventure so you can look back and remember someday, and I mean, Instagram, right? But if you want your camping trip to be the best it can be, don’t spend all day every day looking at your tech and agonizing over the perfect shots. When you’re spending time in nature, you should take the time to actually appreciate it. From the smallest tree to the furthest star, there is so much beauty in nature, and if you’re too busy on your phone to appreciate it, well you’ll have wasted your trip.

Respect nature

Speaking of nature, it’s important that you pay her the respect she’s due. You may be fully focused on the awesome adventures that are unfolding around you, but that doesn’t mean that you can forget to pick up your trash or trample all over those beautiful wildflowers. Before you do anything have a quick rethink about the impact it could have first. Not only is this the right thing to do, but it could help to stop you from getting it in the neck from park rangers and various other people who hate to see nature disrespected, which would really put a dampener on your trip. Do the right thing, and leave no trace.

Do your research

Even the smallest National Parks with the safest reputations can be dangerous – I mean they’re no all-inclusive resort – which is why it’s always a good idea to do your research before heading out camping. 

If you know in advance what, if any predators, there are in the area, and if you know where the most dangerous spots are, you can do a much better job of avoiding them and coming home unscathed. Oh, and speaking of home, make sure that someone back home always knows where you and your party have headed to each day, just in case they do need to send out a search party at some point!

Be good to your fellow campers

When you do come across other campers out on their own adventures, be polite. Say hi or give a nod of the head. If they look like they need help, give them it. If they could use something to eat, offer them a little food. Not only is this the kind thing to do, but it makes the camping experience more pleasant for everyone involved, and it can often lead to some solid friendships, Plus, you never know which of those people you meet will have the spookiest campfire stories, so you need to keep your o0ptions open!

I mean we have all heard horror stories of disgusting bathrooms, unusual set ups, or missing rolls of toilet paper, right? For us, this was never more true than when we were dealing with the bathrooms while driving a Tuk Tuk across India in the Rickshaw Run! Many of those were definitely not the best toilets in the world. But we get it! When you just finished off a behemoth 128 ounce Big Gulp, sometimes you just got to go!

Okay so not all of the bathrooms out there are the world’s best toilets. In fact, there is one located at Mount Elbrus in Russia that has the distinction of being known as the world’s nastiest. Located about 12,139 feet high on Mount Elbrus, this toilet is basically a pit of stench with no way to wash your hands after. We strongly recommend you bring your own disinfectant or antibacterial soap!

7. The World’s Most Beautiful Toilet In The World

Located on what is known as the Norwegian Scenic Route, the Uredd Rest Stop in Norway is considered the most beautiful toilet in the world! Named after the Norwegian “Uredd” submarine from World War II, the rest stop was redesigned in a minimalistic style to entice people to stop and take in the views. But if you can hold it, the best time to visit this amazing toilet is at night when the frosted glass seems to glow in the dark.

8. The Most Transparent Toilet In The World

For those of you who like to cater to your inner exhibitionist, then you will definitely want to test your boundaries at the public toilets in Tokyo! Created by the Tokyo Toilet Project, these colorful yet clear toilets are truly for the courageous. But don’t fret. Even if you can’t hold it any longer and really need to go, you won’t be advertising your goods. These restrooms actually have a technology where the glass becomes blurry to outsiders when someone enters.

9. The Tallest Outhouse In The World

When we used to go to summer camp, our parents always recommended that we try our best to get the top bunk! There is nothing worse than being “down stream” of other people’s body issues. So, you can only imagine which floor you would rather use at the 2 Story Outhouse at Cedar Lake in Michigan! Built in 1875, one theory is that this strange outhouse was once connected to a hotel or boarding house. But whatever reason it was built, you may want to avoid the bottom toilets no matter how bad you have to go!

If you ever head to the state of Washington for a backpacking adventure, then there is no doubt that you will want to check out North Cascades National Park. That is because this hike is loaded with amazing views of deep green canyons and gorgeous snow covered peaks. But if you want to liven your formal experience up, perhaps consider making reservations at Sketch London. This funky yet quite fancy restaurant makes you feel like you are dining in an art gallery as the walls are adorned with countless pieces of art. But when the tea runs through you, be prepared for one of the strangest toilets in the world. The bathrooms are filled with toilets shaped like Eggs all beneath a multicolored stained glass roof. Now if movies ever taught us anything, we all know to beware of the Pod People! But when you got to go, you got to go, right?

There is no doubt that camping or visiting a National Park is on the rise in recent years. Perhaps, it’s because we are finally learning about their hidden beauty and fun adventure activities. However, it isn’t for the fainthearted – and yet a lot of people think they can just hop onto a local trail in a pair of sneakers and with a half-empty water bottle. Get Prepared

Preparation is key. If you’re planning to go to a national park, make sure that you talk to a ranger first about what to expect. They will be happy to have this conversation – they want you to stay safe and they don’t want any mishaps in their area. Make sure that you are aware of any difficult areas, of any places you should avoid, of local weather conditions, of animals that you might encounter, and so on. After all, fore-warned is fore-armed. Carry The Essentials With You

You should invest in a light-weight pack so that you can take essential items with you when you hike. First and foremost, water is key. Take a reusable bottle with you – you should be drinking half to one liter of water per hour when you’re walking, so take plenty of water with you, along with water purification tablets or a filtration system if you anticipate needing more water than you want to carry. Carry snacks with you that are lightweight and that will give you plenty of energy, and take more than you will need for just one day. A first aid kit is key: take antiseptic wipes, bandages, medical tape, blister plasters, allergy pills, and any medication that you may need (including for the next day, just in case). Materials to light a fire are essential – if you get lost you can use it to signal for help. Look online for the best ferro rod – these are better than matches as it doesn’t matter what weather it is. You should also take sunscreen with you along with items of clothing that you can wear to cover up like a hat and a collared long sleeved shirt, along with a lightweight fold-up rain jacket that you can use if the weather turns. A space blanket is a good idea – not only can they be used to keep warm, but they are also reflective and can be used if you get lost.

Buy Good Quality Boots And Socks

When you’re hiking it’s essential that you have good quality boots and socks. You need to get footwear that fits you properly and that cushions your feet. These will protect your ankles if you trip over, and they will also prevent you from getting blisters if they fit you correctly. Get them fitted at an outdoor supplies store, and make sure you break them in around the house and on local trips to the store before you undertake any big adventures. You should also wear thick hiking socks instead of cotton ones. Hiking socks will wick moisture away from your skin and keep your feet dry.

Stay On The Trail

Finally, it is absolutely essential that you stay on the trail. There are documented cases of people getting lost and going missing after stepping just a few feet off the trail – it’s so easy to get disoriented and to walk in the wrong direction, even if you’re just stepping away to use the bathroom. If you get lost or hurt, it will be a lot easier for people to find and rescue you if you keep to the trail – and a lot safer and cheaper to get you home. The terrain off the trail might look perfectly safe but there are often hidden dangers that you might not see – nature is beautiful but it’s also dangerous and unpredictable and you need to avoid any issues so that you get home safe at the end of your trip. You may be an avid hiker who really knows what to do and what not to do but you still need to know your limits – and no matter how good you are, you are limited to staying on the trail.

When the majority of us go away, we book up in luxury hotels or Airbnbs which provide home comforts. The more appliances on offer, the more appealing an accommodation option might seem. That’s no surprise considering that many of us go away to chill out. For some, even the idea of doing laundry during that luxury week is too much.

Sadly, easy trips like these don’t always make it onto the bucket list. They’re nice, for sure, but they don’t exactly create lifelong memories. When you look back in fifty years, the chances are that the majority of your hotel trips will blur into one. But, that’s never going to happen if you introduce activity to your bucket list with a wilderness trip.

Know what you need in your survival kit

You should never go wild without a survival kit. Bear Grylls may get by on little more than his own urine, but you don’t want to end up doing the same. This is still supposed to be a fun trip, after all… Remember, too, that a heavy pack is the last thing you want if you’re trekking tough terrain. As such, you need to keep this simple while also making sure that you have everything you need. For one, pack at least one spare set of clothes. That way, you can wash your others in lakes and rivers and leave them to dry without worry. You should also make sure to take along maps and compasses. There won’t be any Sat-Nav where you’re going! Getting permissions for your trip can seem incredibly un-adventure related, but it’s something you need to do. You can’t set up camp anywhere and do your thing. While necessary permissions vary, you need to make sure that you do your research. It may be that you merely need to inform the authorities of your presence. This ensures you don’t get a rude awakening when someone spots your fire and phones the police. You may also find that you need to apply for permits to pass through certain sections of your journey. In some cases, these may come complete with a small fee, or even a license which can take a while to get approved. As such, you want to take care of this aspect of your planning as early as possible to ensure nothing holds you back as the time draws near.

Plan your itinerary to the T

As you can probably guess, planning your itinerary for a trip like this is a whole different beast. For hotel vacations, you’ve always been pretty loose, right? It might be that you’ve always had a rough idea of what you’d like to do, but no concept of when or how. With a trip into the wilderness, that’s never going to work. To ensure that things like food rations and water sources never run out, you need to stick to a strict schedule. Even finding yourself one day past your plan could lead to going without water for extended periods. When you’re exerting yourself, that could be fatal. Instead of leaving this to chance, then, you need to plan every aspect of your trip. Again, it may not seem like the wilderness survival stuff of your dreams, but it’s crucial. Fail to do this, and you’ll never make a success of your trip. You would end up having to get off course all the time to stock up. Before you know, that will take up the entirety of your time. Don’t let it happen. Plan exactly where your stocking up points should be, and how many miles you need to travel each day to reach them. Then, make sure you keep that itinerary in your pack so that there’s no risk of your forgetting it before you leave!

Talk someone else through your plans

No wilderness exploration comes without risk, especially if you’re going it alone. That’s why the last part of your plan should be to tell someone about your trip in detail. It may even be worth giving them a copy of your itinerary so that they always know how you’re getting on. By arranging to phone them at set stops along the way, you make sure that they know you’re safe at all times. If you’re as little as a day late phoning, they can then contact the authorities in the area you’re in at the time. That ensures you’re never left in a dangerous situation for long. If you fall or otherwise hurt yourself, that person will come to the rescue sharpish.

The Tent

While tents used to take half a day to put up and secure, there is now a huge selection of pop up style tents. These may seem gimmicky; however they are made from the finest canvas to protect against the elements, they are well constructed and take a mere ten minutes to pitch up and secure. As a family, you could choose a couple of two-man tents or go for a more family orientated experience and sleep within the same canvas topped dwelling.

Sleeping Bags

Although you might not be planning on sleeping out in subzero temperatures, it doesn’t hurt to account for every eventuality. You don’t want to waste space and pack needless items that you know you’ll never use, but at the same time, you don’t want to be caught short. Skewers for toasting marshmallows are a must as are matches. You don’t want to be going neanderthal trying to make fire out of a couple of twigs and some dry grass.

Going camping doesn’t always have to mean ‘roughing it’. While some people wouldn’t dream of taking unnecessary luxuries, others wouldn’t make a foray into the world of camping without them. If you love a decent glass of wine with your dinner, take a bottle or two. If you love nothing better than a hot Italian espresso first thing in the morning, why not take a portable coffee maker along for the ride?

First Aid

Don’t forget to pack a basic first aid kit. At the very least you should have painkillers, antiseptic wipes, insect repellent, sun cream, gauze, bandages and band-aids. While you can’t account for every eventuality, you know that if the kids are out climbing trees, swimming in the lake or having a whale of a time exploring the forest trails, a minor accident could occur. If in doubt, get yourself to the local hospital but having a simple first aid kit should keep everyone safe from harm.

Heading out on a family road trip and embarking on a camping adventure can be huge amounts of fun. Relatively cheap and giving you plenty of quality time together, you will be able to create memories that will last a lifetime when on your foray into the world of camping.

Warming Chili

If you want a simple one pot meal to satisfy the crowd, then say no more…

Ingredients:

• 500g Mince beef
• 1 red onion
• 2 chillies (pick whichever you prefer)
• 1 tsp cumin
• 1 tsp paprika
• 1 tsp garlic salt
• 200ml tomato purée or paste
• 3 cans of chopped tomatoes (approx 400g each)
• 8 Jalapeños slices plus a splash of the vinegar
• 1 tin black beans
• 1 tin kidney beans

First of all, chop your onion into small pieces and sweat them in the pan with a little oil. Add the mince and cook completely. Add all other ingredients and simmer for 20 minutes or so until boiling hot. Serve with rice or bread.

Skillet Pizza

Pizza is one of the ultimate comfort foods, and here’s how you can make it on a campfire!

Ingredients:

• 1 ball pizza dough
• Flour
• Your favourite pizza sauce
• 1 cup mozzarella
• Your favourite toppings
• Olive oil

Roll out the dough to fit your pan, and coat the pan in olive oil. Place the dough into the pan and cook for 2 minutes, flip it over and then add your toppings. Cover with foil and bake until the cheese is melted and bubbly, approximately 8-10 minutes.

Baked Potatoes

If you have some leftover chilli from the night before then this is the ideal way to use it!

Ingredients:

• 1 russet potato per person
• 1 tbsp butter
• 2 tsp salt
• Your favourite topping (chilli, beans, tuna, cheese…)

Melt the butter in a pan and add the salt. Let cool and coat your potatoes in the mixture. Pearce holes in the potatoes to let steam out. Wrap in foil and bake for 40 minutes. For the last five minutes, crisp up the potatoes on a grill pan. Serve!

Chicken Curry

Why not spice things up on a cold night with this warming recipe?

Ingredients:

• 4 chicken breasts, diced
• 3 cloves garlic
• 1 red onion
• Thumb Sized piece of ginger
• 1 chilli
• 2 tbsp curry powder
• 1 tsp paprika
• 1 tsp cumin
• 1 tsp turmeric
• 1 tsp cinnamon
• 3 tins of chopped tomatoes (400g each)
• 3 tbsp tomato purée or paste
• 2 tbsp natural yogurt or coconut milk
• Rice to serve

First of all, coat your chicken in the spices (leave 1 tbsp curry powder) and leave for 30 minutes or so. Set aside. For the sauce, sweat the onion, garlic and ginger until fragrant and onion translucent. Add in your curry powder and cook for a minute. Add in the chicken and fry until crispy and browned. Add in your chilli, chopped tomatoes and tomato purée and simmer for 20 minutes. Add in the yogurt or coconut milk before serving with rice.

Salmon and Sauteed Potatoes

If you fancy adding some fish into your diet for the week, cooking some salmon with potatoes and greens will be the perfect dish to make. You’ll be able to enjoy a fresh, healthy meal which is really simple to make and the whole family will enjoy!

Ingredients:

• 4 salmon fillets
• 4 russet Potatoes
• 1 head broccoli
• 2 cups green beans
• 2 tbsp Butter
• Salt and pepper
• 1 Lemon
• 4 tsp dill

First of all, chop your potatoes into small chunks and boil for 15 minutes. Once tender, set aside. Take your salmon fillets and cover with dill, salt and pepper. Place 1 quarter of a lemon on each fillet, wrap in foil and bake for 12-15 minutes. Meanwhile, melt the butter in a frying pan until foamy. Add potatoes, salt and pepper and cook until crispy. Boil your vegetables in a pan and then you are ready to serve everything up to the mob!

S’Mores

There’s no real camping trip without toasting some marshmallows by the fire, let’s take a look at how you can make this classic campsite dish.

Ingredients:

• Nutella
• Graham crackers
• Large marshmallows

Take two graham crackers and spread on some Nutella. With your marshmallow, place onto a skewer and toast over the first until blackening. When done, place on top of one cracker and sandwich the other on top, pulling the skewer out.
