If you are actively pursuing your Adventure Travel bucket list like we are, then you know exploring the world can be truly amazing! But though the reward is immeasurable, the costs of traveling can sometimes be something of a hinderance. That’s why we’re constantly scouring the internet for travel hacks that give me the best value for my money.

One of the best money-saving techniques we often use when traveling is looking at places to stay on Airbnb. We love Airbnb for multiple reasons. But probably one of the biggest reasons is that we can save money on some of the best Airbnbs in the U.S. compared to hotels in a similar location. Plus, with a few extra travel hacks, we have developed a strategy to help anyone save even more money on Airbnb! Check out these 11 travel hacks that could save you hundreds of dollars on your next Airbnb booking!

1) Use an Airbnb Coupon Code

Sadly, Airbnb has stopped giving out Coupon Codes for Guests.  Before February 26, 2021, the easiest way to save money on Airbnb was to use a first-time coupon code. Essentially by accepting the Airbnb Coupon Code, you were immediately given $55 (USD) off your very first Airbnb booking! It was a great way to save money on Airbnb while testing out the numerous options they had to offer. 

Now, though they don’t offer new promos, some of you may still be able to save money.  See, according to Airbnb, “If you were sent a coupon prior to the shutdown of the program, you will be able to use the coupon on any booking made prior to the expiration of the coupon.”

So, log on to your account and see if you have pending coupons or credits. All you have to do is log on, click on your profile in the top right, select ACCOUNT, and then Referral Credit & Coupon. If you have a credit from a promotion waiting for you, USE IT before they cancel them entirely.

2) Book Early

Like with any sort of travel, whether you are trying to find a cheap flight or cheap lodging, timing can be crucial. Sometimes we wait too long to find a place to stay when travelling to a popular location or a specific event and it costs us. So don’t make that mistake. Booking early can really help you save money on Airbnb! Plus, we found that you can often find cooler locations in a more centralized spot if you start checking earlier before they book up. For example, we found a great Airbnb deal in Munich for Oktoberfest in 2017 near the festival grounds just by looking at places a few months earlier.

3) Try To Be Flexible With Your Travel Dates

Flexibility is often one of the biggest keys to travel hacking. If you are trying to save money on Airbnb, then being flexible with your dates can often help. Obviously, weekends may be a bit more expensive. But if you can stay mid-week in a desired location, you can possibly save some extra money on your place of choice. When you find a desired location, look at the host’s calendar and see the prices for different days before booking.

4) Save Money on Airbnb by Staying Longer

We can see it in your face right now, did they say staying longer would save money on Airbnb? They must be crazy!

Well, we are a bit crazy, but seriously, you may also consider trying to extend your stay.

See, many hosts on Airbnb will offer discounts for longer stays. For example, as seen in the picture above, it is actually $6.00 cheaper to book 7 nights versus just 6 at an Airbnb we found in San Diego, California.

So read all of the offers listed to see if adding a day may help you save money on the property. In general, we have found that many Airbnb properties offer anywhere from 10%-30% off depending on whether you are looking at weekly or monthly stays.

5) Pay Attention To The Extra Fees

One of the biggest mistakes we personally make is overlooking the extra fees involved with travelling. A place on Airbnb may have a great initial price but then with extra fees like cleaning or a service fee, you can get nickel and dimed up to a price you may not like. Therefore, look at the total price with fees and see if that matches your budget. Also look for places that don’t charge extra per person. The good thing about Airbnb is that all fees must be presented up front, so you won’t be surprised.

6) Search Better

Taking your time to really search better can save you money on Airbnb. It is easy to just search the city center for a place to stay. However, with a little research, you can find an awesome place that may be just outside of your desired location. For example, with a little research Darcee & I found a penthouse suite in Edinburgh, Scotland for $51 a night. The only issue was that was 1.5 miles away from the city center. But in our research, we realized it was an easy 5-minute walk to a public bus. So, every day, as our host Trevor put it, we were “whisked to Holyrood Palace and the Parliament buildings, to the city center, or down to the waterfront to visit bustling Leith, Ocean Terminal shopping mall, or the world-famous Royal Yacht Britannia” by bus.

7) Negotiate With The Host

One of the interesting factors about Airbnb is that the room prices are set by the individual hosts. So, you may not have to necessarily accept the initial price. If you are lucky, you might be able to haggle with a host and save on Airbnb. Here are the steps to successfully negotiate with your host:

• Do not click the red Book button. Instead, scroll to the bottom of the listing and click Contact Host.
• Here is where you can easily send a quick message to your host.
  • Share in your email any positive reviews you have on Airbnb from previous stays
  • Share how long you are planning on staying & why you feel their location is ideal for your travel adventure. Remember in general, many hosts offer discounts for longer stay and it will be noted. However, let’s say they only offer that for a 7 day stay and you’re staying for 6. Ask your host if they would be willing to give you the 7-day rate for your 6 days.
  • We usually check out multiple Airbnb locations and may send a counteroffer to several people. But if there is a place you really like, give them an idea of what you can possibly afford. Also share with them what nearby places are offering to see if they are willing to match those lower prices.
  • We like to look for places with zero or few reviews. I have found that places with zero or few reviews are often the best bet in order to save money on Airbnb. This is because they may be new or just a bit farther from the tourist areas. But reviews are very important to Airbnb hosts as they allow them to be found more effectively and can ultimately equal more visitors. Therefore, tell them that you will write a review for them after your stay in exchange for a discount.
  • If you don’t have a price point of nearby places, then just give them a price point 20 – 30% lower than their asking rate.
  • Ask them, if that price point sounds good to them, to “Send a Special Offer.” Special Offers allow the host to set a custom price for a guest who has sent a booking inquiry. A special offer is for those who are ready to confirm a reservation because it is only valid for 24 hours. Therefore, hosts may be more willing to offer you a deal if they know you are not just a looky-loo.

8) Search For Discounted Airbnb Gift Cards

One of the easiest ways to save money on Airbnb is to buy gift cards at a discounted rate. We have had some success finding Airbnb gift cards for sale for anything from 3% to up to 20% off. It is actually rather easy to just check when you start your travel planning. Several websites we use will even email us when Airbnb gift cards become available at a certain price we want or when they go on sale.

When looking for discounted Airbnb gift cards, we immediately search Raise! They make it easy to buy gift cards online at a discount so you can save on a wide variety of brands, retailers, and restaurants. In general, we save around 3% or more off an Airbnb gift card.

9) Redeem Your Points For An Airbnb Gift Card

If you have a credit card that allows you to collect rewards points, you may be able to redeem them for an Airbnb gift card. For example, with American Express membership rewards, you can redeem $100 Airbnb Gift Cards for 10,000 points. Or if you have Chase Rewards, you can get a $25 Airbnb gift card for 2,500 points. So, make sure you are earning your rewards points on every purchase so you can snag a gift card.

However, if you are like Eric, you don’t use credit cards so earning memberships rewards may not be an option.  But don’t fret because, you can still find fun ways to earn points to redeem for gift cards. Personally, we participate in rewards points websites like MyPoints where we collect reward points by participating in miscellaneous free activities or making online purchases from certain retailers.

Now you can’t necessarily use your points on either of these sites for an Airbnb gift card directly. But we personally use our points for Visa Gift Cards or a Paypal redemption. Then we can easily use that cash redemption to purchase our Airbnb stay.

10) Refer Others To Become an Airbnb Host

So, we all know by now that there is no Airbnb affiliate program or even a simple referral system for earning on stays.  However, there is still a truly simple way to earn money on Airbnb.  The most popular way now is to invite anyone and everyone to become an Airbnb host.

After you introduce a friend to the Airbnb Host Program, then they’ll get an extra $10 after completing their first booking. But then you too will earn $220 for the one-time referral.

11) Search Outside Of Airbnb

In reality, sometimes Airbnb just isn’t the best priced option on a specific property you found. But in our research, we’ve found that often a host is renting out their space on Airbnb and using other booking services as well. This is even more of a probability if the Airbnb listing is a popular named place with tons of reviews. Therefore, we will often try searching for the Airbnb place we like on another site like Booking.com just to see if the price is lower.

When it comes to a unique and fun experience, Jo Piz shared how one night she and her mom had a “dinner in the dark” where they ate an entire four course meal in total blackout. For them, it had to be one of the most strange experiences ever. Jo said:

“I can’t really explain it. It was just so weird. I literally used my fingers to eat the majority of the meal because I kept misplacing my fork. I always knew where my wine glass was though :-)”

6) You can’t get disqualified and sent home

For those who watch travel competitions on tv, one of the most disappointing parts is when your favorite team either gets disqualified, voted out by the other members, or is the last to arrive at the pit stop and gets sent home. Who wants to start a race only to not be able to finish it? I would rather race the entire race and finish last, than not finish at all! It is said that with more than 400 million native speakers, Spanish is second most spoken language in the world. So it is not shocking that many people like me have “Learn to Speak Spanish Fluently” on our bucket lists. Perhaps, this is because learning Spanish can help with business or give us a leg up while we travel. But for me, becoming fluent in Spanish holds a very important and personal meaning. Finding a way to learn Spanish will allow me to connect to my Cuban heritage.

If you explore The Adventure Travel List part of The Bucket List Project, it won’t take you long to find the item titled “Visit Cuba: Visit my Cuban Family Homeland“. In fact, it is one of the top items on my entire list only behind some Personal Growth items. But with it now being easier to travel to Cuba from America, why haven’t I tackled it with full enthusiasm? Why haven’t I walked the streets where my mother and grandparents walked many years ago?

The main reason for me: because I speak Spanish very poorly. You see growing up, I took classes and spoke Spanish with my family whenever I was given a chance. But, we didn’t live near our Cuban relatives. Plus, growing up in New Orleans, I never really had an opportunity to practice my Spanish. Therefore, without practice and more study, my level of Spanish stalled at a child’s speaking level.

Now don’t get me wrong, this basic level of Spanish has worked for me while travelling the world. I was able to manage while walking the Camino de Santiago across Spain, backpack to Machu Picchu in Peru, and explore the amazing street art in Cartagena, Colombia. But with Cuba, I don’t want to just manage it. When I get to Cuba, I want to interact with the locals, find my mother’s childhood home, and really dive into the culture more than just the way a tourist would do.

So now what?

Well, I created the bucket list project as a way to make a conscious effort to start tackling items on my list! Therefore, to go to Cuba, I need to first take care of item #36 – Learn Spanish Fluently. Thus, I have researched 5 of the best way to learn Spanish and then some advanced techniques to help you practice what you have learned! If learning Spanish is on your bucket list, hopefully one of the five below will help you too!

1) Learn Spanish with a 1 on 1 Language Trainer

For me personally, Language Trainers are hands down the best way to learn Spanish. There is just something about having someone 1 on 1 to hold you responsible for your learning. What I like is that it forces you to study even if just for an hour with your trainer. For example, I had a Spanish language trainer before I went to Spain. She would work not only on my grammar and pronunciation skills but hold me responsible on days I didn’t do my homework. Plus, everyone learns differently, so a good language trainer can tailor lessons to your level rather than a blanket approach.

2) Learn Spanish with a Language App

Probably the 2nd best way to learn Spanish is via a language app on your phone or mobile device. The reason why I like language apps is that they combine effective education methods with state-of-the-art technology. Plus they are extremely convenient to use whenever you have a break. Rather than checking Facebook or crushing some candy, you can score points while playing interactive games in Spanish. In general, these games will help you learn the more commonly used words and phrases in Spanish. But it is a start!

Apps that are the best to learn Spanish are:

• Babbel – Babbel is currently the #1 selling language learning app in the world. What I like is that most of their lessons can be done in 10 – 15 minutes. Plus, you can practice dialogue based on real-life situations rather than asking where the damn “biblioteca” is! Plus, can get 50% off a 6-month subscription at Babbel when you click here to download Babbel for your computer, smartphone, or tablet.
• Duolingo – Probably the 2nd most popular language app, Duolingo operates in a similar manner as Babbel. With this app, it seems that you can schedule a fixed amount of time every day and it fits your lessons around your schedule. What I like is that Duolingo turns learning into a game where you earn points for correct answers as you race against the clock. So now your boss can’t yell at you for playing because you keep playing that word tile game on your phone. Instead tell him you are studying!
• Memrise – So in doing my research, Memrise is becoming more and more popular from the looks of it. From what I gather Memrise takes old school flash cards to the next level. But it is not just another flash card app. (Yes they make flash card apps if you’re into that!) Essentially, it teaches you Spanish by showing you a limited amount of words, phrases, or concepts per lesson. Then they test your retention with multiple choice quizzes. One of the features that many people like is that there is plenty of Spanish lessons. But you can also words or phrases you need to learn whether for business or otherwise.

3) Learn Spanish with Classic Language Software

If you been conscious for the last 25 years, then you will recognize the infamous yellow box from Rosetta Stone. This software has been the leader in learning Spanish on your computer. Their comprehensive self-paced program offers ways to learn words and phrases that will help you in real life Spanish conversations. Plus they offer great audio tools to help you not only with pronunciation but also understanding natives in a real conversation. There is nothing worse than being told something in Spanish and replying, “huh? can you repeat that MAS LENTO!” because he spoke too fast or with a proper accent! My only issue with Rosetta Stone is that for the price you better be committed to using the software. But with that said, like anything, if you use their software properly, you can find success.

4) Learn Spanish with Old School Books

There is something to be said for digital Spanish learning tools. They are always accessible, easy to use, and often very interactive. But just like the resurgence of music records, there is a new interest in old school Spanish lesson books. Perhaps this is due to people suffering eye strain from staring at a their screens too long or just the desire to hold a real book again. Either way, there is no lack of books at your local library or BooksAMillion that can help you learn Spanish!

Here are a few books we found that are the best to learn Spanish:

• Living Language Spanish – This book teaches Spanish with proven techniques that will help you express yourself rather than regurgitate words you memorized like a parrot.
• Spanish for Dummies – So this may seem really silly to add Spanish for Dummies but after doing a lot of research they have an entire series of books that cover every aspect of learning Spanish. They have books for intro, intermediate, grammar, verbs, common phrases and more.
• See It and Say It in Spanish – So this book by Margarita Madrigal has been around for a while. Yet, it still maintains itself as one of the best ways to learn Spanish. I remember getting it for Christmas from one of my Cuban uncles several years ago who wanted to help me improve my skills. It’s great because right from the start, the book leads you into speaking conversational Spanish. I love the book in this picture because “Via Fora” essentially translates to “GET OUT!” Sometimes you just need to get out of your current environment to learn something new. This can definitely be true with learning a foreign language like Spanish. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t always easy. But if you are going to go on vacation anyways, why not spend it doing something for yourself! In my personal experience, I learn far more Spanish while being forced to engage locals in another country. Plus, there are several international study abroad programs that offer unbelievable experiences that go well beyond the class room.

Advanced Techniques to Help You Learn Spanish

One of the problems with learning anything is retaining what you have learned. This has always been a problem for me. So after doing some research, I have found ways to help you practice your Spanish no matter what method you choose to learn. Since I am a sensory learner, I find these ways engage me in different ways that will hopefully solidify the Spanish language.

• Watch things in Spanish – Whether you watch Sesame Street on your tv or you subscribe to fun educational Spanish shows on YouTube, your eyes will reinforce your skills. Plus, it will help you put visuals with words to help make them easier to remember.
• Listen to things in Spanish –  There have been countless studies that prove that music can help with memory. So bust out your favorite playlist and sing along. On top of music, there are countless podcasts that teach Spanish in a fun yet educational way.
• Read things in Spanish – Obviously you can always read some of the books we listed above. But you should also add fun magazines, comics, or your favorite novel in Spanish. I remember my parents giving me Castor and Pollux or Pitufos (the Smurfs) comics in Spanish when I was kid. It was a great way for me to be entertained while secretly I was learning Spanish.
• Write things in Spanish – Writing things out is a great way to commit them to memory. So whether you write out a daily journal that you share with your Language Trainers or you plaster all the things in your house with sticky notes written in Spanish, it can all help.
• Learn a new hobby in Spanish – One of the best ways to learn Spanish is to engage in a way outside of the classroom. It doesn’t matter if you decide to learn how to work out, build something, or take up a new talent. By trying to read the instructions in Spanish, can possibly help you strengthen your skills.
• Talk to other people in Spanish – Obviously, real life practice with other people is a great way to further learn Spanish. There are often meet up groups in your own community where you can go to practice your pronunciation skills and for an added bonus you make new friends.

While some of us spend these winter months planning our summer vacations, others make the most of the winter sun. It may not be a hot beach, but trips to ski and snowboarding resorts are popular among tourists. And, it’s easy to see why. Nothing captures that cozy winter feeling like log cabins and snowy mountains.

If you’ve never considered it before, though, a winter vacation can be confusing. Unlike your usual trips, you have a limited locale to play with. Ideally, you want to stick with locations like France or Switzerland for a trip like this. At the very most, you can spread your wings to destinations like Cervinia in Italy. But, you won’t quite have the geographical scope you’re used to.

Even once you have your destination in the bag, there are more decisions to make. For example, anyone intending to ski or snowboard needs to decide between renting equipment or taking their own. For the most part, first-timers tend to rent, and it makes sense. This ensures you don’t spend a fortune on a hobby you might not continue. It also allows experts to fit you up ready for the slopes.

In many ways, renting equipment here is a little like borrowing P.E. kits. The fit is never quite right, and you’re often left with the worst stuff. But, with both skiing and snowboarding, the fit is pretty essential for success on the slopes. Gear which is even slightly too big could bulldoze your experience altogether. When you bring your own stuff, however, you can tailor your equipment to you. Before buying, you can use things like this size guide for boarders to ensure your bindings are the best fit possible. A skiing size chart could also work wonders for improving your time on the slopes.

You can save money in the long-term 

We aren’t going to lie to you; buying equipment here is pricey for sure. That said, so is renting. Rentals have the upper-hand in that they know people using them need that stuff to enjoy their trips. As such, you can expect to pay well over the odds when renting that gear for a week. So much so that even two visits with your own stuff could save you money. With that in mind, you would be mad not to buy rather than rent.

You get to enjoy the most of every moment 

No travel tip is more important than that of making the most of every moment. Sadly, that’s not something you can do if you’re hiring. Queues are usually long, and you could waste upwards of an hour or more getting yourself set up. If you hire on a daily basis, that’s a load of your trip down the drain. By comparison, taking gear with you ensures you can wake up and take straight to the slopes.

The Singapore Grand Prix

There might not be a sport more geared toward world travel than Formula 1 racing, simply because it moves around by nature. Every race (or grand prix) occupies a different city, and in many cases the race actually loops through the city, at least a bit. Reasonable arguments could be made for about 10 of the races as offering the best travel experiences, but within the selection it’s very hard to top Singapore. The circuit for the grand prix is gorgeous and lights up at night in full view of the spectacular city of Singapore. And beyond the event, this happens to be one of the hotter destinations on the planet, and a breathtaking place to spend a few days. Be sure to try the local street food and spend some time at Marina Bay Sands resort.

Monte-Carlo Masters

Tennis courts thrive on beautiful settings, and not just at the professional level. Architectural Digest has even written about beautiful courts around the world, showcasing some truly amazing options. Even on the private level or in the world of country clubs however, nothing comes close to the splendor of the Monte-Carlo Masters. The tournament’s signature orange clay courts are set up right against the Mediterranean Sea, such that fans see the sea one way, the city on both sides, and the mountainous backdrop in the opposite direction. And Monte-Carlo itself, while expensive, is a treat to explore. The beaches are lovely, and it’s worth splurging on a meal or two at the fancy restaurants.

El Clasico

El Clásico is actually two events, in a sense. This is the name given to the occasions when FC Barcelona plays Real Madrid in the Spanish soccer league. Naturally the two matches happen in Barcelona and Real Madrid, where there are two massive, famous stadiums, and where the incredibly enthusiastic supporter bases seem to compete about as hard as the teams themselves. These are unforgettable sporting experiences, and either match will give you the chance to explore a wonderful Spanish city.

The Masters

One way to understand just how special The Masters golf tournament is, destination-wise, is that it takes place at Augusta National in Georgia every single year. Other tournaments at the same level change courses each year to keep things fresh and challenging, but The Masters is essentially viewed as being perfect as is, and is thus not messed with. Augusta National is a serenely beautiful golf course, the event – while exclusive – is captivating, and Augusta in the spring simply invites you to relax and enjoy yourself.

Melbourne Cup

Many nations around the world have horse races they would deem to be the biggest or best in the world. Melbourne Cup is Australia’s version, and while we can’t comment on how it compares to other major horse racing occasions in terms of prestige, it takes place at an absolutely stunning racecourse, it’s a national holiday in Australia, and it gives you the perfect excuse to visit one of the most enjoyable cities in the Southern Hemisphere. Melbourne is a blast no matter what kind of travel experience you enjoy, and the Cup itself can turn you into a horse racing fan if you aren’t one already.

FA Cup Final

Numerous sporting events could bring you to London, including Wimbledon, which may be the city’s most famous sporting event. However, the FA Cup Final is special as well in that it exposes you to what some have called the world’s greatest stadium at Wembley. The final can be held between any two teams in a given year, but it’s the biggest prize in English football save the Premier League title, which means it’s always a festive occasion. While in London you’ll also get a chance to tour some of Europe’s best sights (such as Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London), embrace authentic English pub culture, and generally enjoy an unrivaled city.

There’s No Need To Beat The Rush 

No rush, no sweat! The big thing about traveling when you have no time limit on things is that there are no issues. You can take that opportunity to break up your journey into as many individual components as you want. This helps to make it a less stressful journey. And especially when it comes to traveling, many people fear they have a travel curse! Every time they get to an airport, something has gone wrong, from flight cancellations to no record of the ticket sale. And the great thing about traveling later in life is that you’ve already done most of your stressing out. There’s no point in feeling anxious about all this stuff, and you can take it as it comes. In fact, this is something that we can all learn from. There’s no point in stressing out about the vast majority of things in life because we can’t control them. Let them be.

Your Options Are Endless 

What do you want to do? Do you want to go on a cruise, or do you want to do something a little bit more in depth? Of course, when thinking about going on vacation or traveling when we’re older, the C-word always comes up. But why don’t you do something a little bit more thoughtful? So many of us feel we’ve had our lifetime of stress, which is why a cruise appears to be the most popular option. You can experience the high seas with a drink in hand, and have your food served underneath your nose without you lifting a finger. You can float by, physically and emotionally. Sometimes, people haven’t had the opportunities in life to get out there and attack the world with vigor. If this is you, you don’t need to conform to aged stereotypes.

And what if you are going it alone?

Firstly, if you have specific needs, choosing a destination that’s easy to get around is one great way for you to acclimatize yourself to somewhere. Because if you end up landing in the middle of a city and the hustle and bustle is way too much, getting overwhelmed isn’t far behind. Making sure you’ve got the relevant documents on your person, such as your passport, itineraries, as well as medical contact information, will make life a lot easier. When you are looking to experience a big city, making your first couple of days itinerary free is always beneficial. This will help if you are flying far away and need to get over that dreaded jet lag.

2) Take your time…

Ensuring you have plenty of layovers will give you that opportunity to stretch your legs, get a nice meal, and give you a chance to catch your breath. Being in a stuffy plane for hours on end isn’t good for anyone! And if you are someone who’s not used to a lot of traveling, this will give you that chance to decompress.

Personally speaking, traveling later on in life can give you a lot more than when you’re younger. While you don’t have as many stresses in life when you’re younger, you could argue that after retirement, you are as carefree, if not more carefree you than your youthful years. That’s not to say that traveling is always a picnic! If you want to get the most out of it, be sure to listen to your body. You need to give yourself the chance to de-stress when possible, and take it at your pace. When we’re younger, there’s a misconception that once we hit a certain age, that we are past it. But as we get more life experience, we can get so much more out of vacationing in our twilight years.

Australia 

We’re going to start by discussing one of the most fascinating countries in the world. A question that comes up so often is how can somewhere so beautiful be full of so many deadly things? Well, the truth is, so long as you’re a sensible traveler you won’t need to worry about these creatures. So before we get into the reasons to go to Australia, keep this in mind – take heed of warning signs and listen to officials.

But, there really is no reason to worry and some of the sights you are going to see will be stories you tell for a lifetime. So let’s start with one of the main reasons to travel to Australia.

The Great Barrier Reef, the largest living thing on the planet and home to so much sea life that your eyes will never stop having something new to look at. The color of the water underneath the surface is a clear turquoise, which allows you to enter into this hidden world and take in the breathtaking beauty. Whether you are scuba trained or just able to snorkel, a trip to the Great Barrier Reef should be right at the top of anyone’s bucket list. In addition to all of the wonderful things from coral to parrot fish that you will be able to see, the reef has a unique shared distinction with the Daintree Rainforest that makes a trip to Queensland in the northeast of Australia a must. The Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest are the only two natural World Heritage sites that meet, meaning you can stand with one foot in the reef and one on the rainforest floor and be doing something totally unique to this part of the world.

However, Australia is so much more than reefs and rainforests. This country boasts a rich historical culture and a fascinating wildlife which is just waiting for you. A trip down to the state of Victoria should see you taking a short journey over to Phillip Island. If nature is what you want, then here nature you will get. For starters, there is a conservation centre for Koalas that means you will get to meet one of Australia’s famous marsupial creature up close and personal. But that is far from the main attraction of Phillip Island.

Every evening around sunset, fairy penguins take part in what has become affectionately known as a parade. You can take a seat in the provided decking and watch in awe as the maximum 43cm penguins come back from the sea to their nests and families among the rocks around you. It is a moment that will stay with you for a lifetime and will truly make you feel at one with nature.

While in Victoria, be sure to pay a visit to the state capital, Melbourne. Home of the 100,000 capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) where you can see Aussie Rules Football, Cricket and so much more year round. If you’re in town during New Year’s Eve, you will find that Melbourne prides itself on a competitive fireworks show with its rival Sydney. The latter has the Sydney Opera House and its infamous Harbour Bridge, so is also well worth a visit while you’re in this part of the world.

Finally, a natural phenomenon that will bring you closer to the native Aboriginal heart of this country. Uluru (Ayers Rock) has become a tourist hotspot over the last few decades, but this part of the world near Alice Springs has millennia of history coursing through it. During the day the temperature can be scorching hot, but that works just fine for you because a visit during sunrise and sunset will be perfect to capture its beauty.

Australia has many other states and wonderful places to visit like Rottnest Island home of the Quokka just off the coast of Perth and wine country in Adelaide, South Australia. But now we must move on to a different part of the world to give you bucket list some different tastes.

Europe

You might wonder why have we suggested a whole continent here rather than a country like above. That is because Europe offers you the opportunity to visit many different countries and cultures in a short space of time so we are going to go through some of the places you can visit and what you should be doing there as well.

1) London, United Kingdom 

Home of Big Ben, fish and chips, and the royal family. If one country has outpunched its weight around the world for past few centuries it is the UK, and London its capital has so much to see and do that you’ll be occupied for days. A lot of the main attractions are actually within walking distance which is one of the joys of London. Big Ben, the House of Parliament and the London Eye are all separated by just a few minutes of walking and a bridge. Buckingham Palace isn’t much further down the road, and if you’re paying a visit be sure to check if the Royal Standard flag – not the Union Jack – is flying because that will indicate that Queen is home. If sport is your thing then London is the place to be. In the North of the city you have the national stadium Wembley which was rebuilt in the mid-2000s. To the east, you have the London Stadium which was home to the 2012 Olympics and not to forget the countless football stadiums including Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge in the west. While in west London, you might want to consider a trip out to the home the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in SW19.

2) Paris, France

Once you have finished your sightseeing in London, it is time to catch the Eurostar and move on to Paris, France where you will be welcomed by the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. Similar to London, Paris is a good city for walking. However, you might want to explore the metro in order to find your way to impressive Montmartre in the 18th arrondissement. Be sure to take the walk up the stairs to find a hidden village of sorts with restaurants and street musicians looking out over Paris.

3) Switzerland

From Paris you have many options, but for the sake of this journey we are going to head south into Switzerland where you will be greeted by the Alps. A stunning mountain range which spans this part of Europe from France, across Switzerland and down into Italy. Take the train from Paris to Geneva and enjoy the beauty of Lake Geneva and pay a visit to the European headquarters for the United Nations, before boarding your final train down to Italy. The joy of rail travel through Europe is that you can pick and choose your destinations with ease. This recommendation, seeing as we are ticking bucket list items, is to find your way to Venice.

4) Venice, Italy 

This unique place is actually 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. What makes Venice a must see place is how different it remains to many other places in the world. There are no roads, only canals and pavements. So if you wish to navigate your way around you will need to board one of the many water taxis or if you’re feeling up to it, a ride in a traditional gondola. This part of Italy is full of attractions including Saint Mark’s Basilica, Burano and Rialto Bridge. The second of this is an island outside the main hub of Venice and should be top of your list if you’re in the area. A small fishing town, all of the houses are painted different bright colors which gives this place a distinctive characteristic in an enchanting part of the world.

Check List 

Before you go travelling anywhere, you should ensure that you have checked a number of items on your to-do list to ensure safe and happy travels. For starters, make sure you have insurance for while you’re away, companies like Leibel Insurance Group can assist you if required. Next up, have all your reservation details stored – that included accommodation, transport and any attraction tickets bought in advance. Finally, make sure you are organized. You should be ready to see the world with a suitcase full of useful things, not the entire house. Your itinerary should be packed of fun, but remember you’re going travelling to enjoy life so don’t be too rigid. You never know where life might take you.

Again, there’s pretty much nothing relaxing about standing in line at airports or even sitting on a plane itself, but if we travel by air, then it’s just pretty much a part of what we have to endure to get where we’re going. When traveling on a road trip, there’s none of this going on, so you simply just get in your car or RV and drive on your own schedule and at your own pace. You can stop and take in the sights whenever you feel like it.

As you can see, there are definitely some strong reasons as to why a road trip is the best way to travel, but how do you make sure it goes as smoothly as possible?

There are some things you should make sure you have in place before taking off on the open road to make sure things go well:

1. Making sure your vehicle is up to the latest safety standards — check for chips in the windshield and go to Glass.net if you find any, ask a mechanic to service your engine, keep your tires at the right level, etc. If you don’t do these checks then you might end up breaking down in the middle of nowhere! Plus, you should always make sure that you have the correct insurance by visiting somewhere like State Farm. Not only will insurance protect you if you have an accident, but it is a legal requirement. You should also have additional insurance like travel insurance and accident coverage so that you have quality legal representation for the seriously injured should you need it.
2. Things like medical emergencies are unlikely, but they can and do happen, so just being prepared for these will make things much easier on everyone.
3. It’s also a good idea to create some kind of plan for your trip and make a list of the things you want to see, but don’t get too hung up on it because the whole point of a road trip is about having the freedom to not have to be stuck on a certain schedule all the time.
4. Make sure you have enough supplies to take on your trip is also important. You will need to bring plenty of food, water, and even extra gas and a spare tire just in case you get stranded somewhere and can’t reach a gas station.
5. If you’re traveling with children, then you’ll need to take some extra steps to make sure they’re entertained along the way, because, depending on how old they are, they may not appreciate the beautiful sights along the way, so to prevent them bugging you with questions every 5 minutes of “are we there yet?” then bringing along something like an iPad with their favorite movies and shows, some board games, and maybe even things like craft sets and coloring books will help keep them entertained throughout a long road trip, which in turn will ensure that you get to enjoy a more relaxing trip yourself.

Sign up for the newsletters for a few cruise lines before you book your travel. This is often where any special offers will appear, and then you may be able to have a longer cruise that you originally thought you could afford.

Before you make a definite decision, take a close look at the ship the cruise is on. The facilities can vary greatly between different ships, and what is included in the price can too. Most of them will include the food in the restaurants unless it is a special event or you want to eat in one of the restaurants that only serve specialty dishes. Use of onboard facilities is also usually in with the price, but you will have to pay for any excursions you join when the ship is in a port. Of course, you do not have to take part in these and are free to wander around on your own.

Emergency Situations 

With so many people on board a cruise ship, it is inevitable that sometimes an illness or accident will happen. The onboard medical services are generally very good, but if you need specialist care they will arrange for you to be hospitalized at the next port of call.

If you have to take medication on a daily basis, make sure you have an ample supply before your ship departs. They will have medicines on board, but there is no guarantee they will have the one you need.

Clothing 

Most cruises are very informal compared to what they used to be. Smart casual is the way most people will dress for dinner these days. However, it is wise to check out the itinerary of the ship in case there is an event where formal dress is required. Then it usually means a suit and tie for men, and something akin to ‘Sunday best’ for women.

Other than that you should pack for the area you are visiting. If you expect to spend lots of time on beaches or by the pool of the ship, lots of swimwear will be needed as well as loose clothing to throw over the top of it is you decide to go walking.

Just remember that your suitcases could take several hours to reach your cabin, so if there is anything you will need before it arrives, have it in a separate carry bag.

Best Locations For Cabins 

This will depend on what you want from your cruise. Think in terms of the ship being a floating resort. The bigger the cabin and the nearer the facilities it is, the more it is likely to cost you. You will also pay extra for a cabin on the upper decks that has its own balcony.

The cheapest cabins are usually the ones in the centre of the ship, and if not having a view does not bother you, they can also be ideal for anyone that suffers from motion sickness.

You also need to consider what facilities are close by. Do you really want a cabin that is underneath a dance floor, even though it means you have only a minute’s walk to get to it? That might suit you down to the ground, but if you are worried about the noise look for a cabin elsewhere.

Help Is There When You Need It 

Cruise lines are very aware that if you need help or information while on board, it has to be from one of the crewmembers. They are all trained to be as helpful as they can, and if they do not know the answer, they will at least point you in the direction of someone that does. Apart from the safety of everyone on board, you enjoying your trip is the aim of all the operators.  Never be afraid to ask questions or for help if you need it, and then your first cruise will hopefully be very enjoyable.

Some of the countries on your bucket list might be expensive but if you don’t have that much money to spend, you should consider going somewhere else. There are plenty of great countries where the cost of living is quite low. A lot of the eastern European countries, for example, are incredibly cheap while you’re out there and the cost of flights and accommodation isn’t too high either. Places like Budapest and Prague are great places for a cheap city break.

Get A Travel Credit Card

If you can get some money back on your purchases that can then go toward future travel, you don’t need to worry about spending too much. The best travel credit cards give you reward points that you can then put toward future travel. So, if you’re booking flights and accommodation on there and then spending while you’re out there, you can quickly build up a good amount of points to spend on future trips. You usually get a better exchange rate if you’re using a credit card instead of changing all of your cash so your money will go further.

Get Paid While You Travel

The easiest way to get more spending money to travel is to earn while you’re out there. There are a lot of different ways you can do this. You can start a travel blog and write about your experiences or you could teach English as a foreign language. You could even just find a job in a bar or a shop while you’re out there. If you’re earning money while you travel, you only need to pay for your flight there and accommodation for a while and hopefully, you should be able to earn enough to cover the rest of the trip.

If you don’t really know where the cheaper restaurants and bars are, for example, you could end up just going to all of the expensive ones and spending loads of money. But if you know where to go to get the best value, you can save a lot of money. It’s also worth researching the cheapest forms of public transport so you don’t waste too much money getting around.

If you are anything like me, then there are a plethora of exciting adventure activities and experiences from around the world that are on your bucket list! 2) Soaking in a Geothermal Pool

If you followed our adventures through Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, then you know that one of our absolute favorite outdoor activities to do is to soak and swim in any geothermal pool or river. So when I discovered geothermal pools of Pamukkale where you can actually take a soak, I was sold! Whether you just put your feet in or fully submerge yourself, you will love your time amid the white cotton candy looking pools.

HOT TIP: (See what I did there? Hot Tip?!?!) Make sure you take a dip in the antique swimming pool where Cleopatra is rumored to have bathed.

3) Go Hiking

From the country’s highest Peak at Mount Ararat to the 509-kilometer Lycian Way, there is a wide array of areas to hike in Turkey. No matter if you are a total beginner or an experienced climber, you can easily find opportunities to suit whatever level of difficulty you desire. Now, we can’t guarantee you will find Noah’s Ark but there is no shortage of breathtaking views whether you are in the mountains or along the coast.

4) Sailing the High Seas

Surrounded by four different seas and endless coastline, there is no doubt that you will find some amazing outdoor adventures in Turkey on the water. From taking a dinner cruise around the Bosphorus Strait and Black Sea to a full day sailing around the nearby islands of the Mediterranean, you will have some great opportunities to take one of the top Turkey Cruises or Sailing Tours.

5) Paragliding

If the idea soaring heights of 9,000-10,000 feet above sea level are on your bucket list then you are in luck. Turkey is a paraglider’s heaven. Visit a haunted house 

As the pinnacle of spookiness, haunted houses are the way to go when you’d like to experience the true Halloween.

While breaking an entry into an abandoned psychiatric hospital from the 1960’s is probably not the best idea, however scary it might be, you can still find a lot of tours for both haunted houses and ghost tours, in general, if you know where to look.

Many cities offer these types of ghost tours where they take you through the history of the city with its many decades of horrible customs you’d be glad we have long put behind us. While you may be both frightened and disgusted with how we used to treat each other back in the days, you’ll return from the tour feeling very happy about the present.

Have a horror movie marathon 

Some horror movies are terribly great while others, however, not so much. Craft together a list of great horror movies you’d like to watch and complete them all in one sitting – or just enjoy one or two of them if that’s enough horror for one night.

The trick is, of course, to hope that Halloween brings a lot of rain, and only start the movie when it’s already quite late. You’d want the setting to be gloomy, dark, and scary. Boat Shares 

Many boat owners don’t use their boats all year round and are willing to offer a share at a reduced rate. This is great because it means that you get access for a certain amount of time each year without having to pay all year round. The downside is that you may not be able to choose which times of year you do get the boat and you may be obliged to pay extra should maintenance costs arise.

A similar idea is joining a Boat Club. This is a website that offers a very similar idea except that instead of paying monthly for a single boat, you get access to the whole portfolio around the USA. You also won’t have to worry about upkeep or maintenance on the boat so you can just relax on your holiday.

Flotilla Holidays 

If you aren’t an experienced sailor but the lure of the sea is too much to bear, a flotilla holiday could be just for you. A flotilla is a group of boats that travel together so even though you will have your own boat and space, you also have a group to support you including professional staff.

Beginners will usually be given a few days of sailing tuition to get them started but if you have a suitable qualification, you will likely be introduced to the boat and then let loose. The idea of the flotilla is that you will all follow roughly the same route around your location. This makes the holiday much more social as you will have people to socialise with too.

Go SCUBA Diving 

Whether you are a huge fan of corals or you want to see shipwrecks, SCUBA diving is one of the most fulfilling activities you can do on holiday. The ocean is largely a mystery to us but given that most sea life lives on the coast (as far as we know!), you can see an incredible amount of what goes on beneath the waves.

When snorkelling isn’t enough, SCUBA diving brings you an immersive experience. This is especially true if you choose a liveaboard boat experience as you will get to travel much further afield than if you were going from a land-based centre.
