When a person is dreaming of places to tackle bucket list adventures, I’m sure Germany tends pop up as an option. That’s because the country is packed with ton of fun and unique experiences. For most people, I am sure items like racing down the Autobahn, taking a river boat cruise down the Rhine River in Cologne, or dancing the Polka at Oktoberfest come to mind. But recently, we discovered a great activity you should add to your bucket list: to Bike Tour Germany.

Wait, you’re not 5, why on earth would you want to spend your day cycling in Germany? I mean aren’t you on Holiday?

Look, we get it! Exploring Germany by bike might sound hard but trust us riding German touring bikes are as easy as, well, riding a bike!

Cycling in Germany is Very Convenient

Travelling around Germany isn’t necessarily hard with countless trains, underground rails, and bus routes. Yet, when you bike tour Germany, you no longer worry about crowds or timetables. Not to mention, often when you arrive by public transportation, you still have to walk to your desired destination.

Of course, you could always rent a car in Germany. However, you still face the challenge of traffic and finding parking. When cycling in Germany, you can easily just ride up to your desired destination and not have to worry about spending hours looking for a spot to park.

When You Bike Tour Germany You Discover More

With over 45,000 miles of bike paths throughout the country, it is definitely easy to take a cycling holiday in Germany. Whether it’s something in the main tourist section of a city or a palace on the outskirts of town, using a German touring bike can get you there. Like in Berlin, a lot of the hot spots are near the Brandenburg Gate in former East Berlin. But the famous Charlottenburg Palace is on the other side of town in the former West Berlin. According to Google Maps, from the Brandenburg Gate, you would need to hop on the S Bahn or a bus, then transfer to the underground or another bus, and then walk 5 to 10 minutes totaling about 40 minutes. A forty-minute trip may dissuade you from visiting this beautiful palace. But with a bike, it is an easy 20-minute ride over there from Brandenburg gate.

Also, while riding a bike in Germany, you get to find the hidden gems like a unique historical site or local hot spot. For example, in Munich, riding bikes allowed us to discover a unique World War II historical site often missed by visitors, behind the Feldherrnhalle known as Shirker’s Alley (Drückebergergasse).

You Save Money When You Explore Germany By Bike

While travelling, getting around can be a rather expensive add on to any adventure. With a car rentals, gas, and paid parking, it can often total as much as the plane ticket to get there. If you decide to skip the car rental, then you are forced to use public transportation which is great in Germany but can nickel and dime you every time you use it.

However, when you bike tour Germany, cost becomes less of a factor. Generally, with bike sharing services like Donkey Republic, you can easily find a bike for about €10 ($12 USD) for the full day. That is, it!

Germany Touring Bikes Are Good For Your Body

It is hard to escape all of the sausages, schnitzels, pretzels, sauerkraut, and strudels in Germany. Then to top it off, there is a ton of great beer everywhere. You Can Bike Tour Germany Easily With Donkey Republic

It is extremely easy to rent a touring bike in many cities in Germany with Donkey Republic. Just Follow the instructions below and start exploring:

1. Visit www.donkey.bike and download the Donkey Republic app on iOS or Android.
2. Once the app is downloaded, open it and search for bikes in your city. If you are planning ahead, see where what cities in Germany or anywhere in the world Donkey Republic has bikes by visiting www.donkey.bike/cities
3. Then locate the bikes you want to rent. When you get there, choose the number of bikes you need and click “Rent Now”.
4. It will next give you Drop-off options. Then choose one of two options. Option 1 is where you return the bike to the original pick-up location. With Option 2, you can choose to return it to any other return location. This is great if you are just using your bike to get to a far-off location but don’t want to have to ride it back to your origination spot.
5. It then takes you to the payment page, where, if you want, you can purchase theft insurance for the day.
6. The payment page will also give you an option to add a Coupon Code. Don’t forget to enter BUCKETLIST to save an additional 15% off your rental!
7. From there it will tell you the Bike Number that is yours for the day. You can see number on the bike by looking at the cell phone holder on the handlebars.
8. Then make sure you turn on your phone’s Bluetooth. Then tap “Unlock” on your phone and the app will open the bike’s electronic lock. What is really cool is that you can lock or unlock your electronic bike lock whenever you want. So, if you are riding by the Chinesischer Turm beer garden in Munich’s Englischer Garten, you can easily lock up your bike and stop for a Beer and Brats. 
9. Explore Germany by bike and have an unbelievable day seeing the sites.
10. When you are done, return the bike, lock the electronic bike lock, and click end your rental.

As this poor soul luged down the mountain screaming, I immediately knew that I had to add the Mieders Alpine Coaster to The Adventure Activities & Experiences List.

About The Alpine Mieders Coaster

The Alpine Mieders Coaster or the Serlesblitz, as it is also known locally, is a thrilling ride that starts atop the Koppeneck Mountain in the Stubai Alps of Tyrol, Austria.  You will definitely feel an adrenaline rush on this toboggan run, it is faster than you think. For about 10 minutes you zip down the 2.8km (1.7 Mile) track cruising around 40 curves and numerous drops along the way.

Is It Safe?

As an FYI, the Alpine Mieders Coaster is a “ride at your own risk” adventure. However, we found the coaster easy to manage and very safe to use. While sitting in each car the operator will strap you in with a seat belt. It is good to note that each car can reach speeds of nearly 42 km/hr (26 mph). But with the brake lever between your legs, you will find it easy to manage your speed. There are also a few signs along the track urging you to brake prior to steep drops. For this reason, you are not supposed to use your cell phone or hand held camera to take pictures while riding the Mieders alpine coaster. A Go-Pro type camera can be strapped to your stomach or head to film your ride.

Ticket Information

The Mieders Alpine Coaster Operates daily from 9 am to 5 pm during the Summer season. This is generally from the last weekend of from May until the last weekend of October.

The Cost of riding the toboggan can depend on you. As in most cases, the more you ride the cheaper it is per ride. You will also have the option of walking up Koppeneck Mountain or riding the Serlesbahen ski lift to the top. Below is the price grid but you can find more information here.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE: In wet or other, hazardous weather conditions, the Serlesbahnen Mieders can close the Mieders Alpine Coaster for safety reasons! Such closures do not qualify for a reimbursement of expenses!

Other Things To Do

• Go Hiking: Koppeneck Mountain is a great place for day hiking. You have several options:
  • Hike to the top of Koppeneck Mountain
  • Ochsenhütte is a traditional mountain hut about 30 minutes from Koppeneck Mountain Station
  • Maria Waldrast Monastery is one of the highest monasteries in Europe and is about 1 hour hike away from Koppeneck Mountain Station
• Ride the Serleszug train: This is fun little slow moving train that connects the Koppeneck Mountain Station with the Maria Waldrast Monastery
• Play at the Lakes: Serlesseen and Serleswasser are two man-made lakes. Though you cannot swim in either, there are plenty of fun activities like a swing set or a floating wooden platform to pull yourself across the lake.
• Go Mountain Biking: With signposted mountain bike trails, mountain bikers can cruise around enjoying the beautiful views of the Stubai area.
• Have a great lunch: Whether you bring a picnic lunch or decide to dine at Koppeneck-Hochserles Mountain Inn, you will be treated to a wonderful view of the Stubai Mountains.

How To Get There

Most likely you will be staying in nearby Innsbruck which is about 30 minutes away from Mieders. To get to Mieders, you have 2 options: renting a car or taking the public bus.

If you take the public bus from Innsbruck, you will want to ride the 590 A or B bus to Mieders. This will be the same bus number to return to Innsbruck. Ask the bus driver to drop you off at Serlesbahen which is right in front of the station. The cost of each ride is 4,50 € per person each way. You can find bus information here.

Vienna, Austria is known worldwide for its beautiful Christmas markets, but it is magical any time of year. The city itself is easy to navigate and offers endless opportunities for history, culture, architecture, cuisine and entertainment. After, enjoying all of the amazing things to do in Salzburg, we went for three full days in The City of Music, even though we could have easily extended our stay to experience even more. Nonetheless, Vienna cast a spell on us and is sure to do the same to you. I wanted to take photos of everything in Vienna! The fountains, the architecture, the landscape – everything is picturesque and ornate. I had to remind myself to slow down and just enjoy the view.

How to Discover the Magic of Vienna:

Discover the History of Vienna & the Hapsburg Dynasty 

There is so much to do in Vienna, it is hard to know where to start. St. Stephen’s Cathedral is centrally located and has towered over the city for more than 700 years. The cathedral has been the site of many moments in Vienna’s history – including Mozart’s wedding in 1782 and is incredibly beautiful. It is free to walk around (but be sure that you aren’t interfering in services and respect the posted tour times) or you can take a guided tour for €5.50/per adult. St. Stephen’s also offers an incredible view of the city – whether you take the elevator to the North Tower or choose to climb the 363 steps of the South Tower – you will have a bird’s eye view of the entire city – all the way to the Danube River. It is remarkable and quite romantic (if that’s what you are going for).

Once you finish at St. Stephen’s it is a short walk to the Imperial Palace and Treasury. The Palace holds a collection of Imperial museums, but the Treasury is not to be missed. Boasting the title “the most important treasury in the world,” it holds what is thought to be the Holy Grail, two imperial crowns and much more.

Also, part of the Imperial Palace Museums is the State Hall of the National Library of Vienna. The library’s ceremonial room is known as the heart of the Austrian National Library and once you step foot inside, you will understand why. More than a library, it is museum of literature and education and one of the most stunning sites you will see in Vienna. It is often tear inducing to its visitors and will leave you with a sense of awe and wonder. It is a must see. Note that it is closed on Mondays October-May and plan accordingly.

Continuing with the Imperial theme, the Imperial Crypt isn’t far from the Palace, located in the Capuchin Church, it has been the burial spot for the Hapsburgs since 1633. Not only is the crypt impressive as the extravagant and ornate resting place of those in the former dynasty, but offers insight into their history and succession.

Moving on from the Imperial museums, The Belvedere is a baroque palace turned world class art museum in the heart of Vienna. Whether you want to tour the palace and museum to see its incredible art exhibits or take a leisurely stroll through the its magnificent gardens and fountains – you can’t go wrong. The palace was built by Prince Eugene of Savoy who was also a successful military commander.

You can learn more Prince Eugene and the history of Austria’s armed forces at the Museum of Military History. The museum is extensive and houses relics and information from all of Austria’s notable military moments, including the car in which the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated to begin WWI and 5,000 square meters of exhibit space focused on military aviation. If military history interests you, this museum is so full of information that it could take and entire day to explore. It is impressive.

Pro Tip: If you purchase a Vienna City Card from the Office of Tourism you will receive more than 210 benefits across the city – including a discount on admission to all of the sites listed above, all other Palace museums as well as free public transportation. 

Experience the Music of Mozart and Beethoven

There is a reason that Vienna is known as The City of Music, it was home to some of the most prolific composers of all time – as they say, in Vienna, music is literally in the air – and at every turn! You can’t go far in Vienna without seeing a plaque noting a tidbit about a famous composer or an opportunity to experience a musical performance.

You will constantly see people dressed in costume selling tickets to the Vienna Mozart Orchestra and while their salesman can be a little overwhelming, the orchestra itself is phenomenal. The performance consists of some of Mozart’s most famous works, including operatic pieces. As an added bonus, the singers and musicians wear period regalia. We bought tickets online in advance and had great seats that were reasonably priced. Not surprisingly, there are numerous concert halls in Vienna, our orchestra was performed at Musikverein Vienna, Brahms Hall and it was beautiful.

After you experience the Orchestra, it is only right to pay your respects to those that wrote such masterpieces. The MozartHaus was Mozart’s Vienna home from 1784-1787 and his only residence in the city to survive. It is now a museum and worth a visit. Additionally, a visit to St. Marx Cemetery where Mozart is believed to be buried as well as Vienna Central Cemetery, the resting place to Beethoven, Brahms and Strauss are must sees for any music enthusiast. Both cemeteries are home to incredible history and beautifully kept. Though they are quite a walk from the middle of town, they are easy to reach via public transportation. You can catch the tram in front of the beautiful Vienna State Opera House or take bus line 11.

Find the Magic of Vienna as a Kid Again

Everyone loves an amusement park, but Vienna’s Prater Amusement Park is something special. As one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, it exudes charm in the midst of state of the art rides and experiences. Prater is not to be missed and a ride on the famous Wiener Riesenrad Ferris Wheel offers some of the best views in the city. Not only an amusement park, Prater offers numerous events throughout the year as well. Be sure to check the calendar to see what is happening during your visit!

Drink and Dine

While you are going to get a great meal whether you dine at a sidewalk cafe or a Michelin Restaurant in Vienna, there are a couple stops you need to make.

Sacher Tort is a menu staple across Austria, but to find the original Sacher Tort you’ll want to head to Café Sacher.  Here you will discover the true magic of Vienna and why the Sacher Tort at Cafe Sacher is actually better than the rest. You may have to wait in line for a seat, but you won’t regret it. The café is nestled in the heart of Vienna and not only is their Sacher Tort out of this world, but their coffee and other sweets are tasty as well.

After you’ve satisfied your sweet tooth, head a few blocks away to the Loos American Bar. Built by Austrian architect and pioneer of modern architecture, Adolf Loos in 1908, it is known across the world for its dramatic and surrealist interior, crafted cocktails and rich history. It is a must stop for locals and visitors alike. You won’t regret it.

Where to Stay

Vienna offers countless hostels, hotels and guest houses for the weary traveler, but Do Step Inn is the perfect budget friendly, centrally located option for anyone. 1. Explore ancient ruins.

We can’t talk about Peru without mentioning Machu Picchu, but you should click here to find out how you can safely explore the ancient Incan ruins without getting lost. It’s a long walk, but there are alternatives, such as riding on the back of a horse. Who knows, you may actually stumble across long lost riches!

2. Paddle across the Amazon.

If wildlife is your thing, there is no better place to visit than the Amazon itself. Jaguars and ocelots roam the jungle, and all manner of sea life lurk below the water, piranha included. Still, provided you don’t dip your feet into the water, you will be able to soak in the atmosphere of the sights and sounds of the Amazon as you take a riverboat journey.

3. Enjoy a Nibble.

Part of travelling is getting to enjoy the delicacies on offer. Admittedly, some of the culinary delights are for the brave only – roasted guinea pig anyone? – but there are other tasty dishes on offer which don’t involve cooked up portions of the furry pets you have at home.

4. Fly with the condors.

Okay, so you won’t actually fly, but if you traverse up to the Cruz del Condor viewpoint atop the Colca canyon, you will find an excellent spot to watch these magnificent birds glide and dive as they fly down to meet you before heading back into the clouds. Of course, you could also choose this spot to hang-glide and soar like a condor yourself, flying over one of the world’s deepest canyons.

5. Buggy over the sand dunes.

Should you head to the oasis of Huacachina, you will find a desert paradise which is often populated by local thrill seekers. Sand buggying and sandboarding are two of the popular activities for those who want to pump adrenaline, but you can simply walk, or relax on the tip of a sand dune, and catch the site of one of the beautiful sunsets at the day’s close.

6. Get thee to a nunnery.

Visit the Santa Catalina Monastery, which is a labyrinthine nunnery first built in 1579. There are still nuns around today, so you need to be respectful, but there is much to explore within the brightly colored cloisters of this religious sanctuary. Be careful: it is possible to get lost, so be sure to follow the signs as you walk around the 20,000 square meters of the monastery grounds.

Tickets

First things first – you need your festival tickets. Otherwise, there is no way you are getting into all the concerts and parties! Even though you might think that festival season is a long way off, you will need to get your tickets now before they sell out. Most festivals will be on sale now and will usually sell out a couple of months before the big day, so get yourself sorted with your tickets as soon as possible!

A Tent

Part of the fun of a festival is the camping. You’ll be able to get appropriate tents and camp gear from your local camping shop, but there are also plenty of websites that sell these things as well. Make sure you get a waterproof tent, as you don’t want to wake up in a puddle of water! You should also ensure that the one you buy is big enough for whole group. Otherwise, things could get quite cramped during the night!

Camping Equipment

As well as a tent, you will need plenty of camping gear. This includes things like a camping stove, sleeping bags, and flashlights. Of course, the more camping gear you get, the more comfortable your time at the festival will be. But that could work out quite expensive, though…

Appropriate Clothing

You can never really tell what the weather is going to be like over a festival weekend. Even if you see a forecast before you leave, there is a chance that it might not ring true. And, as you won’t be able to get a hotel room if it does turn out to rain, you need to be very prepared to camp in whatever weather the weekend brings. So always make sure you pack some appropriate clothing. That means, pack plenty of waterproofs even if there is good weather forecast – you can never know what the weather is going to get up to!

If you have been to a festival before, you will know that there are going to be hundreds of tents in the same field. In some cases, there will be thousands. After a day of watching live concerts and enjoying yourself, it could be very difficult finding your way back to your own tent. Especially if you have enjoyed a few beers! So, you might want to invest in a tent finder. You attach the sensor to your tent and then connect it to your phone via Bluetooth. It’s then easy to track your tent on your phone!

Starting Point: New York

New York is a great starting point, as it is a destination in and of itself, and you can spend a few days enjoying the lights of the big city before setting off.

First Leg: New York To London

London is one of the most visited cities in the world; it is steeped in culture and history, and offers a vibrant and dynamic experience to the modern traveler. There are plenty of New York to London transatlantic flights, so you won’t be short of options, and there’s plenty to enjoy when you land.

Second Leg: London to Cape Town, South Africa

From London, move to one of South Africa’s capitals for a very different holiday experience. After the bustle of London, a few days in Cape Town, climbing the famous Table Mountain, will help to center you and give you an entirely new experience.

Third Leg: Cape Town to New Delhi

The Indian capital of Delhi should be your next stop; there are plenty of direct flights to choose from, so you won’t have a problem making the next hop west. Fourth Leg: New Delhi to Tokyo

The trip from Delhi to Tokyo is a little trickier to navigate, but that’s to be expected from a round-the-world trip– sometimes the connections will be tough! Malaysia Airlines offer service from Delhi to Osaka in Japan; from there, you can catch a train to Tokyo, which will only take around three hours. The journey will be worth it when you get there; Tokyo is a stunning, modern city that offers something truly different to every leg of your trip so far.

Fifth Leg: Tokyo (via Osaka) to Auckland

After the highlights of Tokyo, you are likely going to want to slow down the pace, so a trip to Auckland in New Zealand could be just what you need. This modern, metropolitan city is home to a range of gorgeous, relaxing parks, stunning beaches, and a number of celebrated seafood restaurants.

Sixth Leg: Auckland to Honolulu

Your final leg puts you back on American soil. Finishing your trip in Hawaii gives you the chance to relax and unwind on the beautiful beaches, before catching a convenient flight back to your home on the mainland.

1) Visit the Cologne Cathedral

Over 765 years old, the Cologne Cathedral became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. According to the Cologne Tourism Board, this beautiful structure is the most visited tourist attraction in all of Germany. This may partly be due to the fact that it houses the Shrine of the Magi. The Shrine was created around the turn of the 13th century to hold the bones of the Three Magi (Three Wisemen) to welcome pilgrims from around the world. As you walk around the church you will see unbelievable devotional images including one of the oldest images of the Virgin Mary known as the Milan Madonna.

After exploring the inside of the church head over to the area between the cathedral cloister and Roncalliplatz. Here you find a set of stairs leading underground. You will pass one of the only remaining Roman cellars preserved in the city. You will also find a ticket center where you can opt to climb the spire of the south tower. To reach the top, you will have to climb 533 steps to the viewing platform. Once you make it to the top, you will be rewarded with an unbelievable view of Cologne (Köln).

Fun Fact: Along the wall of the Cathedral by the stairs leading underground you will find a beautiful tribute to Pope John Paul II & Pope Benedict as the passing of World Youth Day went from one to another here in Cologne.

2) Explore the Rhine River

Having the second largest inland harbor in all Germany, the importance of the Rhine River to the city of Cologne (Köln) is obvious. But unlike most shipping harbors, both shores of the Rhine in Cologne (Köln) offer several unique ways to see city:

• If you are looking to relax, then take a lovely stroll through once labeled Germany’s best city park, the Rheingarten.
• For a more of a modern feel, you can explore the Rheinauhafen District. Here you can marvel at the unique architecture or explore the many cafés, restaurants, and galleries.
• If you want to relax and explore, then take a River Cruise with KD Rhine River Cruise. With a drink in hand, you can learn all kinds of facts about the city, see the ultramodern Rheinauhafen crane houses, or just sit back and enjoy the breeze.

3) Visit one of the Municipal Museums

If you are museum junkie, don’t fret! With so many municipal museums, Cologne (Köln) has a museum to satisfy your desire to learn about art, history, or culture. 5) Visit Chocolate Heaven

The Schokoladenmuseum (Chocolate Museum) is a must for any chocolate lover! Originally created by Hans Imhoff in 1993, it has become one of the most visited cultural museums in Cologne. This is due to the over 40,000 padlocks that have been hung from the iron bridge since 2008. Sweethearts can be seen taking an engraved lock and attaching it to the Hohenzollern Bridge. Then they throw away the key into the river Rhine as a symbol of their forever bound love.

8) Indulge Your Sense of Smell

Exploring the iconic birthplace of perfume/cologne is a must in this city. Still a popular fragrance, Eau de Cologne offers the opportunity to experience the oldest cologne factory in the world . At the Fragrance Museum, you will learn of Johann Farina the inventor of Eau de Cologne as you tour of his house and underground perfume workshops. 9) Eat the Local Cuisine

With more than 3,000 restaurants, finding something to eat in Cologne (Köln) Germany won’t disappoint even the most critical foodie. However, the local cuisine is truly a treat. The more popular dishes like Halve Hahn (Half Chicken), Kölscher Kaviar, or Himmel un Ad (Heaven on Earth) can be found on most menus throughout the city. 10) Drink Kölsch

Kölsch is a high alcohol content beer brewed in Cologne, Germany. There are currently thirteen breweries producing Kölsch in and around Cologne, but most local restaurants brew their own in house. Special waiters known as Köbes carry wreaths of Kölsch in .2 liter glasses known as Stangens around the restaurant replenishing the thirstiest of drinkers.  The beer is hoppy and less carbonated making it light and easy to drink.

Fun Fact: To get a Köbe (the beer server) to stop bringing you a new stangen of Kölsch, place your coaster atop the empty glass. Otherwise they keep coming and serving and you might have to float home!

Cologne (Köln) is a cinch to navigate. Whether you are walking or trying to explore Germany by bike, you will find it easy to get around the main tourist sections of the city. Liechtenstein is often one of those countries that people have heard of, but few know exactly where it is and even fewer have ever visited. In fact, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, in 2016 it was Europe’s second least visited country with a mere 69,000 visitors. While they would love more tourism, the tiny Principality of Liechtenstein is a true gem to those who do wander across its borders. They treat their visitors like family and appreciate anyone willing to give them a chance. If you do venture to the 6th smallest country in the world, let 11 Things to do in Liechtenstein be your guide.

11 Things to do in Liechtenstein

1) Get one of the rarest passport stamps ever!

Being a landlocked country that has no international airport, chances are to get to Liechtenstein you will have to visit one of its next door neighbors – Austria or Switzerland first before entering the country. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get the official Liechtenstein stamp in your passport. Just head over to the Liechtenstein Center or the tourism booth next to the City Train to get your stamp for 3€ or if you purchase the Museum and Adventure Pass you’ll get it for FREE. Who would have thought it would be such an exciting thing to do in Liechtenstein, but due to its difficulty to obtain and rarity among travelers, it is!

2) Walk the Städtle

The Städtle is a beautiful pedestrian street that runs through the city center of Vaduz. Here you will find a wonderful mix of things to do in Liechtenstein from local cafes, shops, government buildings, and museums. Along with the magnificent buildings, there are also several modern art sculptures that line the street including the horse statues by Swiss artist Nag Arnoldi in front of the Rathaus city town hall.

Strolling along the Städtle also offers the opportunity to mail those post cards with the rare Liechtenstein Postage stamp. After writing your letters home and enjoying a coffee or a Alpagold Liechtensteiner Lagerbier at one of the Städtle’s cafes, head over to Post Vaduz (located Städtle 38) to send them off.

3) Explore the Cathedral of St. Florin

• From Life to Death Bronze Statues beneath the front steps that showcase the Virgin Mary holding her son Jesus in two defining moments of their lives.
• The Royal Box above the Sanctuary where the royal family sits during mass.
• The Furstliche Gruft also known at the Princely Vault behind the Cathedral is the final resting place for the Royal Family. Currently Prince Franz Joseph II, his wife Princess Georgina, and Princess Elisabeth are all buried here.

4) See the Josef Rheinberger Memorial & Music School

Josef Gabriel Rheinberger is one of Liechtenstein’s favorite sons. Born in 1839 in Vaduz, he revealed an unbelievable musical talent by age 7 playing the organ. Then by the ripe age of 8 he had written his first composition and it was publicly performed that year. After some convincing, his father finally sent the boy to study in Munich where his music career flourished.  Rheinberger died in 1901 in Munich. However, his grave was destroyed during World War II and in 1950 his remains were transferred back to his birthplace of Vaduz.

Behind the memorial you can still see kids entering his original home to attend the Liechtenstein School of Music.

Fun Fact: In Liechtenstein, in proportion to the population, twice as many people take music lessons than in Switzerland, and five times more than in Germany (source: Liechtenstein Board of Tourism)

5) Visit the many museums

There is no doubt that Liechtenstein supports cultural and artistic growth. This is quite evident with the Liechtenstein Museum and Adventure Pass that allows you to visit most of the museums for free. And if you know me, if it’s free give me 3! However, there are far more than 3 unbelievable museums in Liechtenstein. With a plethora to choose from, it isn’t hard to find a museum to satisfy your interests.

• Treasure Chamber Liechtenstein: This was perhaps one of our favorite museums. Known locally as the Schatzkammer, it houses many exhibits belonging to the Princes of Liechtenstein and other collectors. Inside, you will find amazing Fabergé Eggs, historic weaponry, and a replica of the Royal Crown. We loved seeing the lunar rocks collected by the astronauts on board Apollo 11 and Apollo 17.
• The Postage Stamp Museum: A museum about stamps?!? Heck Yeah and it’s awesome. This museum showcases the hard to get beautiful stamps issued in Liechtenstein throughout history. Moreover, it also shares the history of the postal service in the country. We particularly liked seeing the interesting and unusual tools they used to deliver mail.
• The National Museum: This museum, known locally as the Landesmuseum, offers over 3,000 exhibits showcasing the history and culture of Liechtenstein. In fact the Landesmuseum’s building itself is historic. It was once the princely tavern where Goethe visited during his travels in 1788.
• Liechtenstein Art Museum: Considered an architectural masterpiece, the Kunstmuseum as it is known locally, offers exhibits in both modern and contemporary art. Often there are also special exhibitions from the Prince of Liechtenstein’s own private collection.
• The Hilti Art Foundation: Located next to the Liechtenstein Art Museum (Kunstmuseum), the Hilti Art Foundation showcases exhibits from classical modernist to contemporary. Here you will see sculptures and paintings by artists including Gauguin, Picasso, Magritte, and many more.

6) Straddle the border between Liechtenstein and Switzerland

While searching for things to do in Liechtenstein, why not hike over to it’s big brother Switzerland? Actually it is more like a casual scenic walk than a hike. Located about 15 minutes from the city center of Vaduz, is the Alte Rheinbrucke. The beautiful covered wooden bridge spans 443 feet (135 meters) across the Rhine river. As you enter the last surviving wooden bridge across the Rhine built around 1901, make your way to center. Here you will find the sign denoting the Liechtenstein-Swiss border.

Fun Fact: Did you know that you can get your Kicks on Route 66 in Liechtenstein? There’s an official signposted Route 66 hiking trail that crosses the entire country. In 3 one-day stages, hikers can cross from one side of the Principality of Liechtenstein to the other. (source: Liechtenstein Board of Tourism)

7) Have fun storming the castle

Overlooking all of the City of Vaduz is the 16th century medieval Vaduz Castle and home to the Prince of Liechtenstein and his family. Sadly, you cannot take a tour of the castle because the princely family still actively lives there. But that doesn’t mean you can’t see it up close and personal.

To get there, start hiking next to Brasserie Burg restaurant on the Städtle. Bring a bottle of water and your camera for the 20 minute hike up the slightly steep incline to Vaduz Castle. Don’t fret though, there are plenty of stopping points to rest and signs along the trail detailing the history of the country, castle and princely family. Make sure to stop at Känzeli Viewpoint to take in the amazing views of the city of Vaduz and the Rhine river valley.

Fun Fact: The Princely Family can frequently be seen going about their daily business, shopping or attending a concert in Vaduz. In fact, local children often greet the Prince with a friendly “Hoi Förscht”! (source: Liechtenstein Board of Tourism)

8)Take a ride on the Citytrain

Easily making the 11 Things to do in Liechtenstein and one of our favorite things we did in Vaduz was ride the Citytrain. Of course this ride isn’t a wild ride like the Mieders Alpine Coaster near Innsbruck, Austria. However, this 35 minute train ride takes you on a relaxing tour of the Central Village (Mitteldorf), by the Rotes Haus, and down the Städtle. If you are limited on time, this is a great way to tour the city as the conductor educates you on all the major sights. Plus it is FREE with the Liechtenstein Museum and Adventure Pass.

9) Stop by the Rotes Haus (the Red House)

After Vaduz Castle, the Rotes Haus (Red House) is probably the second most iconic landmark in Vaduz. Located in the historic village area of Vaduz known as Mitteldorf, this house was built in 1338. Around the mid 1500s it was purchased and became St. Johann Monastery and the “Abtswingert” (abbey vineyard) was developed. Later in 1807 the Red House was bought and is still owned by the Rheinberger family. Whether you walk here after “Storming the Castle” or visit it while riding the Citytrain, it is a must see.

10) Drink princely wine, local lagerbier, or wood fired spirits

After tackling these 11 things to do in Liechtenstein, I am sure you are going to get thirsty! So, lucky for you, the country produces its own excellent wine, beer and whiskey. This is perhaps due to the favorable climate surrounding the Rhine Valley or maybe the fact that Liechtensteiners demand quality in everything they create. Either way, you will reap the benefits of their various local libation that will appease even the choosiest of connoisseurs.

• Wine: There are several vineyards throughout Liechtenstein, but visiting the Princely Cellars in Vaduz should definitely be on your list! Known locally as the Hofkellerei, this vineyard is actually owned by the Prince of Liechtenstein. Make sure you stop by for your own personal wine tasting of their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. If you have the Liechtenstein Museum and Adventure Pass, you will get a tasting of each for FREE!
• Beer: For those who love a good beer you should definitely try one of the local brews from Liechtensteiner Brauhaus or Prinzenbräu. You won’t be disappointed in the wonderful flavor and variety either has to offer.
• Spirits: When it comes to Liechtensteiner Spirits, look no further than Telser Distillery. Started in 1880, this family run distillery offers a variety of spirits including Gin, Rum, and Whiskey. Telser is unique because their spirits are still distilled over an open wood fire. Make sure you visit them for a guided tour, followed by a tasting session.

11) Enjoy the great food in Liechtenstein

Goethe once said about Liechtenstein, “As a rule, where fine wines grow, cuisine also tends to be excellent.” From guest house taverns and cafes along the Städtle to fine dining options, Liechtenstein has something to offer everyone.

  • For Lunch: If you are looking for a great lunch, head over to the Städtle where you will find many great options including Burg Brasserie. They have great sandwiches, gigantic burgers, and an assortment of delicious pizzas made to order.
  • For Dinner: If you prefer home style cooking then you will be more than happy with the plethora of choices. We particularly loved the food at both Landgasthof Rössle and the Restaurant Adler Vaduz 1908.
  • For Fine Dining: If you are searching for fine dining, then Liechtenstein won’t disappoint. With restaurants like b’eat and Restaurant Kommod, to name a few, you will be treated to wonderfully crafted dishes and tasty drinks all in a classy environment.

How to Get To Liechtenstein

As mentioned above, Liechtenstein doesn’t have a major airport. Therefore, you will likely have to visit Austria or Switzerland before entering the country. If you are not renting a car, then chances are you will be arriving by bus or train to Sargans, Switzerland in the South or Feldkirk, Austria in the North. From either destination you then easily hop on the Liechtenstein Bus to take you to your final destination in Liechtenstein.

The drivers are great and were very helpful when we had questions. Also if you have the Liechtenstein Museum and Adventure Pass your bus travel is FREE!

One of the best “side effects” of The Bucket List Project is hearing all the different bucket list dreams people often share with me. To see their faces light up as they describe the adventures, travels, or projects they want to complete makes my heart happy. Occasionally people will share with me a bucket list item that makes even me think, “Really? You must be crazy! I would never want to do that.” Now don’t get me wrong, I would probably do anything if I am inspired or incentivized and I would NEVER tell anyone that the things they dream of doing are wrong, but there are things that just don’t excite me or even perhaps scare me a little bit. I consider this My Anti-Bucket List: Things I don’t want to do before I die.

So what is on My Anti-Bucket List and why don’t I want to do them?

A is for Acupuncture

Does anyone else have images of Pinhead from the movie Hellraiser when thinking about acupuncture? Now I am not scared of needles but the idea of being stabbed by multiple hair like needles in certain pressure points just doesn’t sound like fun to me.

B is for Bungee Jumping

Just because I entered the world attached to a cord doesn’t mean I have to leave the world attached to another cord! It’s weird because I really have no major fear of heights at all. However, I am not a big fan of falling. So the idea of strapping a giant rubber band to my ankles and trusting some carnival ride operator to keep me safe as I dive to the earth will never be on my bucket list.

C is for Century Eggs

“I will not eat green eggs and ham, I will not eat them Eric, I am!”

Who doesn’t love eggs? Whether eating them boiled, scrambled, or as an omelet, eggs are one of my favorite breakfast foods. However, I don’t think I can stomach the idea of a Century Egg. Century Eggs, also known as preserved egg, hundred year egg, or thousand year egg are made by preserving duck, chicken or quail eggs in an alkaline mixture of clay and other ingredients for several weeks to several months.

So what makes them so bad? Well, everything I have read describes them as having a dark green jelly like consistency for the outside while the yolk is green and oozes everywhere. Then, if that doesn’t convince you to forgo the delicacy, perhaps the strong smell of horse urine emanating from the eggs will stop you.

D is for Dye My Hair

I never really wanted to dye my hair any fun color as a kid – probably because I have a big old Charlie Brown head and never wanted to waste that much dye. Even now as I am older it doesn’t phase me that my dark brown hair is finally changing and fading away. Perhaps, this is because it is changing into the pre-destined Sam Elliot white that apparently my genetics has been gracious enough to give me.

E is for Eat Vegetarian/Vegan

“Being a Vegetarian/Vegan is just a big Missed Steak!”

I love puns almost as much as I love bacon! Don’t get me wrong, I love veggies of all types but I have no desire to live solely on them forever. Perhaps this is because I just love eating a Cuban steak and New Orleans crawfish too much. So if you are vegetarian/vegan that is okay. Just lay off my double double animal style from In&Out!

F is for Fugu Sushi

Food allergies are no fun – especially the two I have! Now I am not 100% sure, but I may be allergic to a poison called tetrodotoxin, which is 1,200 times deadlier than cyanide. Total bummer I know but I guess that means no Fugu for me. Fugu is a blowfish served in Japanese restaurants that has enough tetrodotoxin poison to kill 30 people if not served properly. Therefore, you have to trust that the chef serving you underwent the mandatory two to three years of training to obtain a fugu-preparing license and is not having an off day. Unfortunately for me, the type of training they go through has a weird side effect that stimulates my second food allergy. Their expertise raises the price of a full course fugu meal to $200 (USD) which makes me break out in hives!

G is for Golf

“Golf is a good walk spoiled” ~H.S. Scrivener

Though originally attributed to Mark Twain, Scrivener originally wrote the quote in a 1903 book about lawn tennis. Either way, the quote holds true for me. I really don’t want to play golf. Now I love the idea of a golf outing. I mean what’s not to love about male bonding in a beautiful location, playing a competitive sport, while drinking and smoking cigars. But when it comes to the actual skill, I STINK!

H is for Hike Everest

Hiking and climbing to the peak of a mountain can offer unbelievable views. But avalanches, rock slides, and losing my toes to frostbite seem a bit much even for an insane adventurer like myself. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to explore the base camp and see the beauty. But I hate the cold and very much like living!

I is for Ice Fishing

Did I mention I hate the cold?! Well I do. So to traverse across a frozen lake to sit in a wooden outhouse to catch fish out of a hole sounds like the worst vacation ever. If this sounds like heaven to you, then more power to you but leave me on a Caribbean island any day while you guys freeze to death.

J is for Jump Off a Cliff in a Wing Suit

I think flying squirrels are some of the coolest looking creatures ever. But that doesn’t mean I want to emulate them. Perhaps this is because I hate the thought of plummeting to my death. Or maybe it is because I just don’t really want to jump off a cliff in a wing suit ever. Even with a really good travel insurance from World Nomads, it doesn’t sound like my idea of fun!

K is for Kopi Luwak Coffee

I know this may sound strange but I don’t like coffee at all. My dad used to grind Cuban coffee beans every morning and then brew up a wonderfully smelling beverage. But it just isn’t my thing.

With Kopi Luwak Coffee, there is no budge in my view. If you don’t know, Kopi Luwak is coffee made from part-digested coffee cherries eaten and defecated by the Asian palm civet. That is right, coffee made from animal poop!

L is for Learn how to Fly a Plane

My cousin Alex is a United States Naval Aviator, and I couldn’t be prouder of him. However, this has never created a desire in me to learn how to fly a plane. I mean I drive like a reckless NASCAR car driver already. Can you imagine me flying in the air above your head like an insane maniac?

M is for Mohawk

Did I mention I have a big old Charlie Brown head? Growing up in the 80s with characters like Mr. T made having a Mohawk a tough guy thing. But I would end up looking more crazy like Robert DeNiro in Taxi Driver than cool.

N is for the Ngwala Cup

I love The Adventurists and all the crazy races they put together! For those of you who don’t know, The Adventurists are the lunatics who developed the insane Rickshaw Run that Darcee and I participated in January of 2017.

However, they have one race that doesn’t interest me at all, the Kraken Cup (formerly known as the Ngwala Cup). Essentially, you take a dugout canoe made from a mango tree, add a bamboo mast, a sail and a couple of outriggers and you sail it towards the Indian Ocean racecourse of spice islands, deserted beaches and sand banks off the coast of Tanzania. Sorry I have no desire to be Tom Hanks in Castaway.

O is for Own a Motorcycle or Dirt Bike

My good friend Jason Hippler is an avid motorcycle rider and I love hearing his stories of riding around the country, but that is really the extent of it. Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of taking a motorcycle on the open road or riding a dirt bike out on the trail. Not to mention, riders always look cool wearing their awesome helmets or the top dirt bike jackets. But, I took a motorcycle riding class and hated it. Perhaps it is because I drive a car like a maniac or maybe because my mom would kill me, but in this instance, being Evel Knievel is not on my bucket list.

P is for Piercing my Body

I have no desire to get my ears or any other body part pierced. This is probably because my earlobes are Dumbo floppy and they would look stupid on me. But in reality it’s more because I am a bit clumsy and I would be one of those horror stories where I get my piercing viciously ripped out in an accident of some sort.

Q is Quit Cigar Smoking

I love smoking a good cigar. It’s been a vice of mine since college. It relaxes me and slows me down even just for one hour. Perhaps a good cigar is my version of Adderall that allows me to focus and pay attention to my friends. Plus, I AIN’T NO QUITTER!!

R is for Run a Race

If you ever see me running, I would advise you to start running too because something bad like a bear, a tidal wave, or a woman scorned is chasing me! Don’t get me wrong, I admire anyone, like my friend Joe Elfer, who signs up for a marathon or a 5k but it doesn’t interest me at all!

S is for Skydive

Back to that falling thing again. Not going to happen if I can help it. My good friend Steve always wanted to go skydiving so I surprised him with the opportunity to fulfill that Bucket List dream. However, like most people he got a bit nervous right before going up in the plane. Like an idiot, I offered to join him in solidarity to boost his courage. Thank God he didn’t need me and had the time of his life cause my pants don’t look good with pee all over them!

T is for Tattoo my Body

I really admire the artwork of tattoo artists. Some of the designs they come up with are truly beautiful. With that said, I don’t think I ever want to get a tattoo. I don’t think people with tattoos are any less, in fact I admire their desire to wear such amazing art. However, I am just too non-committal to a design. I would get a tat and then 2 days later want to erase it and get something different.

U is for U.F.O. Hunting

Is there other life in our universe? I have no idea and I really have no desire to spend time exploring Roswell, crop circles, or other alien sighting locations. Don’t get me wrong, I love astronomy and star gazing. But I have seen what aliens do to unsuspecting alien hunters and just don’t want a prostate exam today.

V is for Visit Austin, Texas

Ok so this is going to ruffle some feathers but the idea of Austin, Texas rubs me wrong. Perhaps it is because I am a New Orleans snob but Austin just seems like a hipster rip off. I just have no desire to see Austin City Limits or South by Southwest music festivals or to eat over priced food out of food trucks.

W is for Write a Book

One of the weirdest compliments I get from time to time is “you should write a book about your bucket list adventures!” Now don’t get me wrong, this is very flattering but I am no author. The idea of writing more than a blog article makes me sweat and my fingers cramp. So I will leave writing to the great authors of our time like E.L. James, L Ron Hubbard, or Nicholas Sparks.

X is for X-Mas Markets in Europe

Ok so I cheated a little with X but Christmas (X-Mas) Markets just don’t excite me. Now, Darcee would sell my organs to explore the beautiful markets in Germany, Austria, Poland, or Czech Republic. The idea of strolling the illuminated stalls and sipping hot chocolate or mulled wine would definitely get her in the Christmas spirit. However it isn’t the reason I want to jump on a plane to travel to those destinations. X-MAS MARKETS, BAH HUMBUG!

Y is for Yoga

So I love to go the gym and train. It is a great way to stay in shape and relieve stress. But there is something about tying myself into a pretzel that just doesn’t sound fun. Again this is probably because I am kind of a spaz and I would be that guy in yoga class who ends up needing medical attention cause I went left when I should have gone right. Plus I don’t want to be ogled at by those heathen yoga women. I am not a piece of meat ladies!

Z is for Zeppelin (the blimp not the band)

So Z was another tough letter. But some people that tell me they would love to ride the Goodyear Blimp (aka a Zeppelin). Now I love seeing a Zeppelin in the sky! However, to be stuck up there for several hours overlooking the Super Bowl from several miles away just doesn’t sound like a good time to me.

Recently, I traveled to Mammoth Lakes, California in celebration of one of my best friend’s 40th birthdays. It was a wonderful trip filled with tons of outdoor adventure and much needed respite. Most know Mammoth Lakes as a popular winter destination because it offers unbelievable skiing. But after a week, I came to realize that Mammoth Lakes has a lot to do during the summer. Here are my 11 reasons everyone should make Mammoth Lakes California – A Summer Bucket List Destination.

#1 Mammoth Lakes is a great place for Hiking

According to Visit Mammoth, the area has over a dozen hiking trails amid the 2 million acres of Inyo National Forest. With the Sierras as a backdrop, you are bound to find beauty everywhere you hike. Depending on when in the summer you hike, you’ll find most trails easily marked and generally clear. One particular hike we enjoyed was catching the John Muir trail around Sherwin Lakes.

Please note that with any outdoor adventure you should be prepared. Before heading out, check the weather and communicate your path with friends and family. It is also recommended you bring sunscreen, bug spray, plenty of water, a snack, and a map.

#2 It is a great Summer Destination for Fishing

For those of you that know me, fishing is one of those activities that tends to push the limits of my attention deficit. However, spending a day fishing in Mammoth Lakes was an unbelievable experience, even for me. In Mammoth, trout fishing is a wonderful adventure even if you don’t catch anything. I recommend going to Lake Mary with your gear, a chair, plenty of sunscreen, and a picnic lunch. Not only do you have a chance to catch the “big one” but the views alone will take your breath away.

Please Note that it is required to have a valid fishing license for anyone fishing over the age of 16 in California. A day license is around $15 and can be obtained at many stores in Mammoth Lakes or online at https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing

#3 It has great Bucket List Mountain Biking Routes

Whether you are an avid mountain biker or just like cruising around town on your beach cruiser, Mammoth Lakes has tons of options for you. You will find everything from paved routes to wild trails through the scenic forest. There are plenty of shops in town that will be more than happy to facilitate your desire to roll around on two wheels. We were able to rent bikes along with proper safety gear from Footloose Sports off of Main Street.

Please note that with any cycling adventure you should be prepared. Before heading out, check the weather and communicate with friends and family about your planned route. It is recommended you bring sunscreen, bug spray, plenty of water, a snack, and a map. Also, please wear proper safety gear like your helmet, protective pads, and possibly gloves at all times. Also, we strongly recommend that you consider getting Travel Insurance from World Nomads.  It is simple and flexible insurance to keep you safe while tackling any bucket list adventure.

#4 Mammoth has some unbelievable Hot Springs in all California

One of my favorite things to do while travelling is finding and swimming in hot springs! There is nothing better than soaking your sore muscles after a long day of hiking in a hot spring and due to Mammoth Lakes’ volcanic past the area is still full of hydrothermal springs. One of the best options is to visit Wild Willy’s Hot Spring off Benton Crossing Road. After parking, you take a leisurely stroll along a board walk and gravel path until you arrive at two separate pools. Each pool is shallow enough to sit down in most spots and just relax in the warm waters.

Another Hot Springs option that you should visit is the Hot Creek Geological Site. Known as Nature’s Cauldron, this spring is “hot” due to the rising of heat from vents leading to large magma below. It is a picturesque site and was also the location of several movies including John Wayne’s True Grit.

Please Note that it is strongly ill advised to swim in or around the Hot Creek Geological Site because of its extreme high temperatures. Also, there have been records of “geysering” of very hot, sediment-laden water as high as 6 feet which can cause injury and even death. PLEASE DONT SWIM AT THE HOT CREEK GEOLOGICAL SITE!

#5 You can see a real Earthquake Fault

Located off Highway 203 between the town of Mammoth Lakes and the ski resort, you can easily drive to see an amazing feat of nature. More properly known as the Earthquake Fissure, you can stand near the edge where the earth separated and revealed a gap due to a series of strong quakes perhaps from about 600 years ago. For us, it was a unique viewing experience as you are able to walk around the fenced off fissure exploring into its dark depths.

#6 You can explore another world at Mono Lake

Mark Twain once called Mono Lake “one of the strangest freaks of nature to be found in any land.” This is perhaps due to the Tufas. Tufas are calcium-carbonate formations created by interaction of freshwater springs and alkaline lake water. Along the 65 square miles of lake, you will find these amazing land masses that will make you feel like you are on the surface of the moon. One of the highlights of our visit was to watch the Ospreys. They flew around the tops of the Tufa spires where they had made their nests.

#7 You can see where the Devil keeps his Posts in Mammoth

One of the coolest features in Mammoth is a collection of basalt columns collectively known as the Devil’s Postpile. These 60-foot basalt columns were formed when lava flowed through the valley some 100,000 years ago. Devil’s Postpile National Monument is open during the summer and offers fun for the whole family. To get to the Devil’s Postpile you need to take a shuttle from The Village. When you arrive, just hike about half a mile to the base. But be sure to take your time because there are countless birds, animals, and unbelievable flowers everywhere.

#8 Try the tons of Water Activities on the Mammoth Lakes

If you are a water baby like me, then you will love the various water adventures around Mammoth Lakes. You can easily find all kinds of rental services if boating is your thing too. They will hook you up with everything from kayaks to full on motorboats as Lake Mary is a perfect spot for boating. In most places, you will also be able to find Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP) rentals so you can cruise the lakes on your own power. However, if you would rather get into some water than on top of it, then put on your bathing suit and head on over to June Lake Beach. Here you can take a dip in the pristine nippy mountain lake while enjoying the incredible scenery.

Please note that with any water adventure you should be prepared. Before heading out, check the weather. It is recommended you bring sunscreen, bug spray, plenty of water, and a snack. Also, please notice that there aren’t lifeguards present, so be careful.

#9 Golf amid the Sierras with the occasional bear hazard

So I am not a golfer at all, but my good friend Brian loves it. One of his favorite golfing experiences is to playing at the Sierra Star Golf Course in Mammoth Lakes. As he said, Sierra Star offers a great opportunity for high altitude golfing. Here he can hit the ball a ton and work through the challenge of ball control on the approach of shots. This unique experience is only enhanced with the beautiful Sierras as a backdrop. Plus the occasional bear walking near the course is a fun “hazard” to say the least.

#10 Return to civilization in The Village at Mammoth

After all that hiking, fishing, and just getting muddy outdoors, you might need a break from the woods. That is why I liked exploring the Village at Mammoth. With all the great restaurants, bars, and shops, the Village allowed us to clean up and just leisurely stroll through a beautiful outdoor mall. They also have all kinds of entertainment for the whole family which is a great bonus. Obviously, you will find fun concerts and festivals in their Plaza on the weekends. But one of my favorite things was the family Summer Movie events they put on in the Plaza every Thursday and Sunday. #11 Unplug & Reconnect with loved ones

Not all of my Bucket List items are about travel and adventure. Many items on my list are designed to help me reconnect with friends and family. So, often I pursue opportunities like spending a week in a cabin in Mammoth Lakes with my closest friends. During the week, we enjoyed sitting on the porch amid the wonderful aroma of the trees without any distractions of television, computers, or cell phones. There is just something about staying in a cabin in Mammoth Lakes. It makes you want to read a book or play board games with your family.

My Liebster Award Questions & Answers

Andreea of 10TravellingTips, with her nomination, asked me 11 questions and here are my responses:

1. Which country left the biggest impression on you and why?

   So far I love everything about Spain. My first trip there was to Barcelona and then to Run with the Bulls in Pamplona. Though very different in personality, both were filled with history, culture, and great food! My second trip to Spain was to walk the entire Camino de Santiago from the Pyrenees to the Atlantic Ocean. Again, I was amazed by the culture and kindness of all the people in all the northern regions of Spain. Plus the physical scenery was often breath taking!

3. Do you prefer to travel alone or accompanied?

   I think Andreea of 10TravellingTips is trying to get me beat up because this is a loaded question! To be honest, I don’t know. For the majority of my life until 2012, I, like most people always traveled with others.  There wasn’t another option in my mind and I always enjoyed the company of others. However, if people couldn’t or didn’t want to travel where I wanted to go, I often missed out and never went. Then in 2013, I decided I didn’t want to wait on others and their schedules and took my first solo trip to Spain. I loved it. For the next several years, any big international trip I took was always solo. There is just something about traveling on your own schedule without having to worry about the needs or feelings or cost of another person. Plus, when you travel alone, if you want, you can always make new friends. Now with that said, I did take a major trip with Darcee to India for nearly 4 weeks and it was great. Her company reminded me of how special it can be to share experiences with someone and that even when traveling with others, you can still make friends.

4. What is your no. 1 dream destination?

   Everyone always asks me this question and it is so hard! Currently, I am enamored with Morocco, Antarctica, China, Argentina, Mongolia, and Myanmar. However, I would have to say if I had to choose one dream destination it would be to spend several weeks exploring my family heritagein Cuba.

5. Where are you planning to travel this year?

   Planning where to travel is always fun for me as seen in my 2017 Bucket List Hopes and Goals. 2017 already started off with a bang, as Darcee and I were in India racing an auto-rickshaw for several weeks and then visited the Taj Mahal. As for the rest of the year, we have a list of places. First the plan is to travel to Scotland, England, and Wales in April and May. Then we hope to explore the national parks of Northern California at the end of Spring.  Near the end of July, we will be exploring Alberta, Canada and Banff National Park. Then come the end of September, we are flying to Germany to celebrate Oktoberfest with the possibility of a side trip to Morocco!

6. What is your biggest fear while travelling?

   Tough question. I don’t know if I have any major fears while travelling because I am usually happiest being nomadic. I guess if I am travelling with Darcee, I worry about her safety since I often find myself in fun but “risky” situations.

7. What are the 3 items that always go in your suitcase?

   First and foremost, I always pack several cigars. There is just something about sitting at a café or an outdoor area in a foreign country with a cigar as I relax and ponder my day of exploration. Secondly, it may be the Eagle Scout in me, but I never travel without a pocketknife. It’s not that I always seem to need it, but as they say in the scouts, “Always Be Prepared!” Third, I would have to say, a notebook and pens. Even in this day and age of social media instant posting, I find handwriting notes, travel plans, or even memories of the day in my notebook, help me to remember things better.

8. What do you love most about travelling?

   I recently realized I LOVE that nervous feeling in my stomach before a major adventure or experience! With traveling, I often get that feeling and it makes me feel alive. When you are exploring, you are often seeing things for the very first time and processing new information through all of your senses. To hear strange sounds, taste new flavors, see great works of art, or touch different environments offers me a great way to learn and grow that I would never have had back home.

9. Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?

   Hopefully, 46! But seriously, I don’t really make plans that far off. But I would hopefully have checked off over 100 items off my Bucket List Project and perhaps added 50 more!

10. Tell us your favourite travelling quote if you have one.

    

11. What motivated you to start your blog?

    Why post The Bucket List Project online? For 3 Reasons:

    1) I need everyone’s help…keep me accountable, help me find ways to accomplish my goals, or just cheer me on!!

    2) I want to help others with their own Bucket List Items.  #103 on my list is to Help anyone Complete an Item on their Bucket List within 1 year of them Helping me Complete one of Mine!!

    3) I want to Inspire People to Dream & then to GO OUT & COMPLETE THEIR BUCKET LIST!  If I can do this, then ANYONE CAN!  Too many people, my Friends & Family included, just go through life living a mediocre existence!

7. A Baby Abroad – Dani is raising a baby while living abroad and making the most of it by travelling near and far. A Baby Abroad is about our journey into parenting, family life, and family travel because the world is too interesting and marvellous to miss out on it… even with a baby in tow. 
8. A Touch of Bliss – Mikaela is a lover of all things beauty, fashion and lifestyle! Her blog is filled with everything but you may also find some more personal posts. Here she talks about her struggles with body image, self esteem, anxiety and other ‘normal’ daily struggles and my quest to combat them.
9. Leave the Couch and Go – Anya and George created Leave The Couch And Go, because they’re passionate about happy and healthy living, and it’s high time they share their knowledge, talents and experiences with you.
10. Ivy & Sprig – Ivy and Sprig is meant to depict moms who are still growing themselves in their interests and passions while raising little sprigs too.  Stephanie seeks to encourage your faith, give you practical ideas for your family and give you a laugh sometimes.

People are often asking me how I learn about these crazy adventures, experiences, or places to travel that are on my Bucket List.  Well, the internet of course! I not only scour the internet but I subscribe to numerous travel and adventure blogs out there to learn about the world.  That is how I found out about The Travel Whispers Blogger Challenge!

The Travel Whispers Blogger Challenge is the brain child of  travel blogger, Stephanie Fox.  Aimed at rounding up 2016 and looking towards 2017, she created 10 out of the ordinary travel questions that would not only share your personal insights on traveling but also introduce other travel bloggers to your readers.  At the bottom of this post, I will list several travel bloggers who are participating as well.  So after reading, please check them out too.  You might find some exciting new bloggers to follow and some great travel ideas for the future!  Also, you can find them across Twitter and Instagram by using the hashtag #TravelWhispers.

When The Travel Whispers Blogger Challenge was passed on to me by Sara & Nacho of I Do What I Want To, I was a  bit nervous to say the least since The Bucket List Project is still a newbie in the blogging world.  However, I found the questions a great way to learn & share not only about myself but my hopes for The Bucket List Project.

So with bated breath, here are The Bucket List Project’s answers to The Travel Whispers Blogger Challenge:

1. If you had to move to a country that you’ve NEVER been to, and live there for ten years, where would you go?

I think I would want to go to Cuba since it is where my mother and family are from originally.  To live in such an exotic environment that offers an unbelievable culture all while seeing where my family grew up, would be amazing.  Plus, being ideally located in the Gulf of Mexico, it would allow me the ability to travel home to see my family in the US, while also, being able to explore other parts of Central and South America.

2. If you had to live in a hotel for the rest of your life, which hotel would you choose and why?

Not gonna lie, I would take a hostel, airbnb, a guest house, or even a tent over most hotels any day. To me, most hotels are just places to store my stuff while I am out and about exploring. However, if I had to be sentenced to a hotel I think I would either want to live in the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans or the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego.

3. If you could only eat the cuisine of one nationality forever more, which would you choose?

This question is tough.  If I could only eat the cuisine of one nationality forever, I would have to either say food from Spain or Thailand (minus the Scorpion on a Stick…been there done that).

When it comes to Spain, I think they offer some of the greatest variety as Barcelona has unbelievable seafood with a Mediterranean flair while up North the pork is phenomenal.  With Thailand, I think it offers a great infusion of Asian styles while also finding some modern flavors from around the world in their more metropolitan cities like Bangkok.

4. Who has given you ‘holiday envy’ this year, and how?

Oddly enough there is a couple who I met in Chiang Mai, Thailand during a holiday festival in 2015, called Yi Peng/Loy Krathong. Hands down Chelsea and Mark give me ‘holiday envy’ for all the holidays and festivals they attend.  Though they currently living in Dubai, they travel all over the place.  In 2016, amid all their awesome travels, I most envied their adventure at Oktoberfest in Munich, which now is on my 2017 Bucket List!

5. If you had to look at the same sunrise or the same sunset every day, where in the world would you never get bored of seeing? Please don’t say sitting outside Cafe Mambo in Ibiza.

I don’t think anything has ever beaten the sunset I saw in Oporto, Portugal.  For the rest of my life, I could easily sit amid the tourists, with a cigar and a glass of port wine, just watching the sun set along the Douro River .

6. If you were taking a ‘staycation’ in your hometown, where would it be and what would you recommend others do?

I am from New Orleans, Louisiana where there is a ton to see, experience, and most importantly EAT! First, if possible, stay at the Hotel Monteleone.  Its one of the older hotels in the French Quarter blocks away from all the fun and action.  However, the most important thing to do is to go down to the famous Carousel Bar and ride the Carousel while having a Sazerac, a Vieux Carre, or any cocktail bartender Marvin Allen recommends.

During the day, you need to explore the art galleries on Royal Street, see St. Louis Cathedral, wander around Jackson square, find treasures in the French Market, and stroll the Moon Walk along the mighty Mississippi River.

At night, you need to stroll Bourbon Street (even us locals do it from time to time), walk through Pat O’Briens courtyard, listen to old school jazz at Preservation Hall, or head over to Frenchman Street to hear some modern Jazz and New Orleans Funk Music. Drink Sazeracs, Pimm’s Cups, Daquiris, Hurricanes, any beer from Abita Brewery or explore any of the pre-prohibition cocktails served throughout the city.

To eat, it really doesn’t matter cause it’s all great! Head over to Café du Monde for beignets if you want a light breakfast.  Though you may want Stanley’s for a hearty breakfast by the cathedral.  For lunch grab yourself a poboy or even better, head over to Central Grocery for a muffuletta sandwich, a bottle of Barqs Rootbeer, and a bag of Zaps Crawtators and head up to the river to eat and watch the river boats!  As for dinner Antoine’s is by far the #1 fine dining restaurant in all of New Orleans in my opinion.

7. Describe your perfect travel day of the year?

My summer was packed with unbelievable days on the Camino and in Portugal afterwards.  But if I had to choose a perfect day, it would be with Darcee in Nassau, Bahamas this past March. We had taken a boat out to the coral reefs for snorkeling and then to scratch off Bucket List #202) Ride in a S.U.B. (Scenic Underwater Bubble).  It was amazing.

8. What have you ticked off your bucket list in 2016?

2016 was a very exciting year for The Bucket List Project as we added many items to the 2016 Completed Items list!  However, I would say the highlight was my pilgrimage along the entire Camino de Santiago.  Not only was it amazing to explore all of Northern Spain, but along my “Walk,” I learned a lot about myself and met some amazing friends. 9. What is top of your travel bucket list for 2017?

I tend to be ambitious and perhaps a bit over zealous when it comes to planning out my Bucket List travel plans every year. 2017 is no different.  When I wrote my 2017 Bucket List Hopes and Goals I realized that I had listed 7 countries outside the US & at least 3 different states from Louisiana.  But I guess that is because I am one of those Shoot for Stars kind of guys. With that said I would have to say which of the 10 destinations is top on my list this year it would be a tie between Alberta, Canada and Morocco.

Alberta escaped me last year, but this year it’s a must for me, if not for Banff National Park alone. We have all seen the remarkable photos of Lake Louise in Banff and that marvelous mountain skyline. Well, I want to see that in person.  Plus Canada is celebrating its 150th anniversary of their National Parks. So all entry is free for the entire year of 2017!

As for Morocco, exploring the Blue City of Chefchaouen, checking out the markets of Casablanca, and taking a camel safari into the desert are all hot on my list!

10. Share your favorite Instagram photo of 2016?

So The Bucket List Project only started on Instagram in September of 2016.  But slowly I have been posting up some of my favorite Bucket List Project pictures from the past.  In November 2015, I was fortunate enough to go to Thailand’s Lantern Festivals of Yi Peng & Loy Krathong.  It was probably one of the best experiences of my life.  While we were all lighting and setting sail to our balloons, I was able to catch this mother and daughter sending off their hopes and dreams into the sky!

It’s that time again, time for reflecting and planning out my 2017 Bucket List Hopes and Goals!

I was home from India for barely a week when I started getting that same damn question, “So what’s next on the Bucket List Project?” It is a question that sometimes bothers me. I appreciate that people are excited for the next adventure (as am I), but sometimes I just want the chance to enjoy the items previously accomplished and tell that story before moving on to the next. Regardless, 2016 was a great year of amazing adventures, new experiences, and wonderful new friends.  See all the Bucket List items I scratched off in 2016 by CLICKING HERE!

So what’s next on the Bucket List Project?

Trying to figure out what I want to do next can be a rather daunting task, especially since I am such a bucket-luster (is that just a dreamer of buckets?) that dreams of big adventures. Being that 2016 was filled with amazing travel and personal experiences, continuing that level of success can add to the difficulty.

But, for the past several weeks, I have been pondering what exactly my 2017 Bucket List Hopes and Goals are going to be.  Some of the items came easy, as they are items I’ve had on my mind, while others popped up for various reasons.  So, with the use of a modern technology (pen & paper) and a time tested strategy (the line graph), I believe I have come up with a great rough draft of my 2017 Bucket List Hopes and Goals.

Now I know that this technology is somewhat foreign to many, therefore I will post below what is written on my 2017 Bucket List Hopes and Goals graph for easier reading.
