This is a solid list of how to stay safe on the trail while hiking. I would include stay together along with stay on the trail. Those allergy pills are super important. There was one time we were swarmed by bees four miles from the car. It would have been a great place for an epipen but an oral antihistamine would have worked in a pinch.

I honestly think the value of a good pair of hiking boots is incredibly underrated. I’ve seen people hiking in terrible running shoes and it’s just not the same!

I’ve resorted to carrying bear spray due to some closer encounters with black bears and a mountain lion/cougar. I’m not too worried about the bears but the cougars kind of get me shook up. They are reintroducing grey wolves and grizzlies back into our area too so I guess we’ll see what happens. I know encounters are rare but I don’t want to take any chances. I also carry a compass like the person mentioned above and also a whistle just in case.

If you are confused, check with the sun. Carry a compass to help you along! I use the one in my iPhone from time to time.

Some great tips. I love hiking in new places but always wary of staying safe. I looks read up as much as I can about the trail before venturing out. Thanks for sharing.

You give some excellent tips here. I think people underestimate the importance of good socks; they can really make a big difference! Staying on the trail is so important; you’d think everyone would, but sadly not all do.

Some great tips here, especially about staying on track and not getting lost because a lot of people are adventurous and want to explore outside of the marked trails. Also, good hiking boots are key and that is something I have learned the hard way.

I was smiling as I read your blog whenever you mentioned getting lost. I love to hike, and often go on hikes when I travel, but usually hire a guide. So, I don’t really think about getting lost. However, after reading this, I now appreciate how a couple of small things could be so important in case you get lost – like bringing matches to light a fire and a reflective blanket. So simple yet such so smart to bring on any hike! I will definitely make sure that I have these next time regardless of whether I have a guide.

Great tips! I grew up right outside of a major hiking spot in my state and there are constantly rescues. It’s always important to be prepared while hiking!
