Everyone has something they want to do before the inevitable happens. As we hope the inevitable will come as late as it possibly can, the activities on our bucket list go unchecked. 

Most people hesitate to do something they always wanted to do. The main reason is that they can’t afford it or they can’t find the time and so on. However, you cannot live your life to the fullest unless you do something for yourself. 

Therefore, you must take a leap of faith, or you’ll end up regretting not doing something. So, live a little will you and give that bucket list another go. That said, here’s why you should check things off your bucket list as soon as possible.

Time is running out.

No, it’s not but the window of opportunity when you can actually do something doesn’t appear very often, so if you don’t take the chase now, you might never decide to actually do it. 

A good example is that lots of guys want to attend an NBA game, in person, of course. They will often browse the best US sportsbooks and perhaps place a few wagers but never actually go to the game. 

The main reason is that tickets are expensive, and they get sold out almost immediately. So, if going to the NBA Finals is on your bucket list, you should plan a guy’s road trip to wherever the finals will take place, on time and actually commit to it. 

In life, something always comes up that makes people hesitate when chasing their dreams. But time is not promised to anyone. See why you should check things off your bucket list as soon as possible:

Life is a box of chocolates. 

Most people spend their lives grinding through the system, never actually doing anything they like. So, when you’re old and retired, you no longer have the energy or the will to do the things you wanted to do when you were younger. 

Don’t wait to be burdened by regret when you’re old and wrinkly. As they say that life is full of surprises, you’ll never get a chance to find out just how much that is true if you don’t actually do something. 

If we take the aforementioned example, it’s one thing to watch NBA Playoffs at home and a completely different experience to watch a game in person. So, if a chance presents itself for you to actually do something you’ve always wanted, make sure you capitalize on it.

Carpe Diem

The thing that makes people so indecisive about doing something they like that may turn out to be something stupid in the end, is thinking about the future. Future is uncertain to say the least and dealing with consequences of your actions is a bridge you should cross once you actually get there. 

Therefore, seize the moment and don’t look back or forward, for that matter. There’s no time like the present so if you have an opportunity to scratch that thing off your bucket list, then by all means do it. 

Whether it turns out to be an awesome or terrible experience is irrelevant. The fact of the matter is that you’ll never know unless you make that step. And if you don’t do it, you’ll spend the rest of your life wondering about “what if”.

In this day and age of polished Instagram photos and amazing stories on blogs and other platforms, we often only see the positive side to a story. But there are many benefits of failure. In fact, when chasing the numerous items on our bucket list we have found that failure is good. That is because in all the stupid mistakes we have made chasing various bucket list items something remarkable happened. We Learned!

Our Travel Failures that led to Success

When it comes to tackling travel bucket list items, preparation is always key! But everyone prepares differently. For example, we are more outliners. We like to have a good idea of where we are going and what we like to do but we don’t detail every aspect of our travel. Don’t get us wrong, we love the freedom of not being scheduled. But by being a bit loosey-goosey it has created a few problems while traveling. However, each time our failure led to success because we learned and improved. 1) We have chosen some lousy destinations

The Fail:

For those of you who know us, you know we love exploring great literary spots around the world. So we were very excited to see and hang out at The Petit Poucet in Casablanca. For those who don’t know this cafe was once where Saint-Exupéry, the French author of The Little Prince used to spend time between mail flights across the Sahara drinking with Albert Camus. But now no one there seems to care or honor that history.

We were also pretty disappointed when we visited Barranquilla! Don’t get us wrong, if you show up to this large city during Carnival you will witness one of Colombia’s most important folkloric celebrations, and one of the biggest carnivals in the world according to UNESCO. But when we arrived there was NOTHING happening in the massive city. Even our hotel hosts wondered why on earth we were visiting their city in April.

How this Failure Leads to Success:  

While these destinations were a complete disappointment they didn’t take away from our travel experiences. I mean to be fair, nothing could disappoint us about Casablanca since that is where we got engaged. But, when the main reason for visiting is a bust, you can either rue in disappointment or adapt. So for us, we learned to adapt and find something else to do which led to some fun experiences.

2) We have not packed well

The Fail: 

Nowadays we try to be minimalists when packing but it was not always this way. If you have read our review on the one bag travel system by Journey System then you saw us toting around a gigantic suitcase across all of the United Kingdom. See we thought that if we packed all of our gear together in 1 large suitcase it would not only be easier but save us tons of money on bag fees. But though it may have saved us a few dollars it was an absolute nightmare to drag around the old cobblestone roads of Scotland and England.

We have also failed to pack properly for the weather. For example, driving into Jaisalmer during the Rickshaw Run, we were freezing. This is because we had forgotten to pack warm clothes. So as we raced to the finish line, we were wearing everything we had packed, just to stay warm.

How this Failure Leads to Success: 

After nearly throwing out my back carrying around tons of clothes, we knew something had to change. We realized that though we want to be prepared for different weather issues and certain events, we need to learn to pack better so we can be prepared without extra items. So first we learned about ways to pack for the different environments we were possibly visiting. Then, we discovered the Journey System minimalist backpack and other bags which would allow us to carry all of our gear better and more efficiently.

3) ERIC often forgets to put on Sunscreen

The Fail: 

Perhaps one of the biggest travel fails that I have is getting sunburned while traveling. Likely, this is because growing up, I rarely got sunburned and never developed a good habit of lathering up. There is also something to be said about always backpacking outdoors, hiking in open areas with no real protection. But to be honest, there is no excuse for not taking better care of my skin. 

How this Failure Leads to Success: 

Now, I like my tan complexion. But to be honest, as I am getting older, this constant abuse of my skin and especially my face is worrisome. Plus, we all know that sunburns can lead to serious issues. In fact, according to the National Cancer Institute, 33,000 adults get sunburned every year so bad that they require emergency room visits. Plus, these burns can lead to future skin cancer or worse, melanoma, which is the deadliest form of skin cancer. So, to prevent future damage, I have become an avid user of Banana Boat Ultra Sport Sunscreen Travel Pack.

4) We have not planned well for ground transportation

The Fail: 

Perhaps one of the biggest travel fails we have is forgetting to plan out our ground transportation. I know this sounds silly. But more often than not, we have arrived at our destination airport with no clue how to get to our hotel. If you can imagine, we are sitting by the luggage carousel when suddenly we realize we have no idea if this city has Uber, a Metro, or a bus system.

This lack of planning also rears its ugly head when we go adventuring. For example, there have been several times when we spent the day at the beaches near Santa Marta or ended up exploring The Great Buddha sitting atop Nakkerd Hill in Phuket and realized we had no clue how to get back to our home base. In most cases, it was a bit nerve-racking.

How this Failure Leads to Success: 

We have made this mistake so often now, you might think that I love to fail. But, with each situation, we have followed a few simple steps to find success. First, we relax. There is no reason to panic or stress out because that just makes the situation worse. Secondly, we have learned to ask for help. Inevitably, people are good and will help you find a way back home. Now of course you should always be cautious and safe. But, we have learned by asking for help that often there may be options like a metro, taxis, Uber, tuk-tuks, collectivos, or even the occasional farm truck that will be glad to give you a ride to your destination.

Hot Tip: We truly feel that most places in the world are safe. However, as in any place you travel please use common sense and stay to main areas while exploring. Adventure Experience Failures that led to Success

Perhaps the easiest bucket list category to experience failure is your Adventure Activities & Experiences list. This is because more often than not, many of these items rely on physical ability which we may just not have. Now that doesn’t give you a pass to not give it the old college try. But, you need to be prepared because your goal may require a lot of training, effort, practice, and ultimately a little luck.  So is failure good when you strike out attempting an adventure activity or experience? We think so.

1) Eric can’t seem to Kiteboard

The Fail:

I remember the first time I saw kiteboarders cruising around Fort Walton Beach, Florida. It was back in the late 1990s and an outfit known as XL Kites had a van parked on the bay with a group learning how to float their kites. I was immediately awestruck and knew I had to try it. So, my mom bought me lessons and I learned the basics of launching and body dragging. But when it came to putting the board on my feet and actually surfing, I FAILED. I pretty much dragged around the bay face first, drinking up all the saltwater Florida had to offer. 

How this Failure Leads to Success:  

Of course, the scenario above was my first time so that was okay. I mean sports like that are not easy to learn. But I had to make some hard decisions and clarify my commitment to Kiteboarding. So a few months later, I took my savings and bought a board, a Cabrinha Switchblade kite, and a full rig set up. With my new gear, I would practice in Lake Pontchartrain, & the beaches of Gulfport. Often I would return to the XL Kites gang in Fort Walton and ask for help. To further my skills (or at least try to) I even spent a week in Tobago with the Radical Sports Tobago Kiteboarding School.

Now, I have to be honest, I still can’t stand on the board and kite at the same time. Even the guys at Radical Sports Tobago were a bit confused by my lack of ability. Though they were impressed by how much of the Caribbean Sea I could drink without drowning. But through all of this failure, my dream didn’t fade. Maybe it is because I love watching the graceful soaring of other kiteboarders or maybe it is because I am stubborn. But I know that hopefully with continued practice, I will succeed.

2) We can’t catch the Northern Lights

The Fail:

Have you ever felt like Eeyore with a raincloud overhead? I am not going to lie, I feel like that every time I go hunting the Northern Lights! Not because seeing the Aurora Borealis is depressing in any way. No, the fail comes in that even if the forecast of the location & intensity of the aurora is supposed to be perfect, by the time I get out there, a sudden stream of clouds appears. REALLY. This has happened to me in my attempt to see the Northern Lights in Iceland, Alaska, Northern Wyoming, & other places.

How this Failure Leads to Success:  

In order for this failure to lead to success, I had to first accept that the weather is out of my control. It seems pretty obvious but that doesn’t mean I can’t hedge my bets to find success. So in order to increase my odds of seeing the Northern Lights, I learned to research better by visiting sites like NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center or the Aurora Hunter. So, with a little luck, planning, and a whole lot of patience, we will finally witness the magical display of lights, someday.

3) We have had run-ins with the law

The Fail:

When we sign up for different activities or adventures around the world, in no way do we ever attempt anything illegal. But that doesn’t mean we haven’t had issues with law enforcement or security forces. For example, while taking on the wild adventure of driving a tuk-tuk across India, Darcee actually got us stopped by the Indian Police! At first, we assumed they thought we stole the tuk-tuk or maybe Darcee was speeding (if that is even possible in that glorified lawnmower). But in reality, he just wanted to say hi and see if we had a $1.00 U.S. bill since had never seen one ever.

Now in Liechtenstein, things were a little different. Essentially the Swiss Guard came down on Eric after he accidentally tried to illegally re-enter the Schatzkammer which is the Princes of Liechtenstein’s Private Collection of treasures. 

How this Failure Leads to Success:  

When it comes to your failures, we truly hope that none of them require the assistance of law enforcement. But if they do, we have learned to always approach the situation respectfully and even with some positivity. For example, with all the things to do in Liechtenstein, being surrounded by armed guards shouldn’t be high on anyone’s list. But, accidents happen. So by being calm, respectful, and most importantly, apologetic, all was forgiven within moments.

4) We have bitten off more than we could chew

The Fail:

I vividly remember staring at the distance sign at the start of my pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago from St. Jean Pied de Port in France to Santiago de Compostela, Spain. For those who don’t use the metric system, 790 kilometers is roughly 491 miles. Wait, what? That is like walking from New Orleans to Epcot Center in Orlando, Florida but with mountains in the middle! Plus, I was doing it alone and only had a guidebook and painted arrows on random walls and rocks to guide me. The start of the pilgrimage definitely filled me with a bit of doubt.

Another time I felt a bit overwhelmed is in preparation for our Climbing Devil’s Tower for ALS. I mean what kind of crazy person volunteers to climb 867 feet (265 m) from base to summit, with a summit 5,112 feet above sea level? I know it is for an amazing cause but I am not as young as I used to be.

How this Failure Leads to Success:  

Well with the Camino, I realized that my only way home was from Portugal, so no matter what, I had to head that direction. It was then that I realized that if I started to walk and either struggled, decided I didn’t like it, or flat out failed, that was okay. This is because I knew that I could always stop and catch a train or another way back. Now I know that this type of “safety net” thought seems a bit like a way out. But to be honest, sometimes people just need to know there are alternatives or a plan B to make them feel comfortable. 

Another thing I have learned that has lead to success is how to gather your support team. When you are taking on a bucket list item that seems a bit overwhelming, you have to stop and look for help. Inevitably, there are others walking that same trail or climbing that same mountain that share similar fears, challenges, or concerns. It is in those moments that you can find strength to accomplish your goals by doing it together! In many of our successes, we have made great friends who won with us!

Personal Growth Failures that lead to Success

Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, author of The Power of Positive Thinking, once shared, “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” I personally love this quote because sometimes it is often hard to relay the benefits of failure to those who only see one final goal. Don’t get me wrong, when it comes to pursuing your bucket list dreams, we want you to keep your eyes on the big prize. But there are so many great and positive side effects to failure especially with items on your personal growth bucket list. Let’s explore a few of our failures that lead to success.

1) I still can’t see my 6 pack abs

The Fail:

I can still remember the feeling of ripping my “fat boy” pants in the parking lot getting out of my car. See back in 2009, I was FAT! I was always husky but that summer as seen in the pic above on the left, I maxed out my 5’8″ frame to a weight of 245lbs. So, rather than buying new suit pants for my job, the year before I had gone to Walmart and bought a pair of those cheaply made black slacks with the elastic band. I mean I didn’t want to buy new expensive pants when I already had some and I could “easily” lose the weight. But I hadn’t. So one day, as I was getting out of my car to visit a client, my cheap Walmart pants tore at the elastic band because I pushed them to the max. It was too much and at the moment, #5) See my 6 Pack was added to my Personal Growth Bucket List.

How this Failure Leads to Success:

Now I will be honest, I thought I would have had a 6 pack by now. I mean that was 11 years ago. But I barely have some details of a 4 pack at times – usually near the summer months. However, that is okay because even though I have yet to get shredded, I still found great success.

You see, in this pursuit for the ideal physique, I still lost nearly 90lbs and have maintained that 157lb weight for over 10 years. Now, it wasn’t easy and I learned that there isn’t 1 way that works for everyone. In fact, I probably have tried about 5 different eating lifestyles and over 45 different workout plans. But I never lost commitment to my goal and my health.

2) I still can’t fluently speak Spanish

The Fail:

So I don’t have many regrets about the choices I have made. But one of the biggest regrets I do have is not studying Spanish more as a kid. My mom tried to get me to learn and initially spoke to me in Spanish. But as I became a stubborn teen, I gave up on it and even rebelled by taking French in high school. However, in my pursuit to learn more about my Cuban heritage and travel more, I have attempted many of the best ways to learn Spanish. The only problem is that I am still nowhere near being fluent enough to have a conversation with my Grandmother.

How this Failure Leads to Success:

So, yes I am still a very long way from fluent conversational Spanish with my Cuban family. But, in this failure, I have had some success. For example, I have learned enough to easily tackle basic travel situations. I have long term traveled to Spain, Colombia, Peru and even parts of Morocco and successfully navigated situations speaking Spanish. Plus, in attempting various ways to learn Spanish, I also discovered better ways of learning subjects overall. That way when I take on future personal growth items, I can find the right resources to help me learn.

Failures in Louisiana that led to Success

In Louisiana, we like to say “laissez les bon temps rouler” which means “let the good times roll.” But we have missed the pirogue a few times by not paying attention. Now don’t get me wrong, we don’t take things too seriously or often live by a schedule down here in the Bayou State. But our lack of organization has led to a few failures. So grab your Mom ‘n ‘em and check out some of our major faux pas while chasing our Louisiana Bucket List!

1) We missed the fais-do-do

The Fail:

For those of you who don’t know a fais-do-do (pronounced fay DOUGH DOUGH) is basically a fun Cajun dance party. In general the best ones are based around food, music, and dancing and are found in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. So when looking for the best fais-do-do, the infamous Cafe Des Amis topped the list. We kept saying that we were going to take the drive over for a fun weekend. I mean it was barely 3 hours away. But sadly due to our hemming and hawing, we missed our chance and it closed in early 2018.

How this Failure Leads to Success:

Cafe Des Amis WAS world-famous for their Saturday Morning Zydeco Breakfast. Visitors were greeted with spicy bloody mary’s and rich Cajun cuisine like eggs with crawfish étouffée. However, the real highlight was when the  Zydeco band started to play encouraging everyone to dance! So, when we realized that we missed our chance it was a big disappointment. But that didn’t deter us. Instead, we asked around, did a little research, and discovered there is a new kid in town, Buck and Johnny’s, that is offering zydeco music, dancing, and a world famous Zydeco Breakfast.

2) We’ve been a wee bit too close to some gators

The Fail:

It a very popular bucket list item to take a swamp tour, visit an alligator farm, or see them in the wild at Rip’s Rookery in New Iberia. So of course, there have been several times where I wanted to show my Wyoming girlfriend, now wife, some true Louisiana gators. But one of the first times I did this we kind of got a bit too close. While walking the lap around Rip’s Rookery on Jefferson Island we came upon several gators sunbathing. By that time, we had already walked all the way around the island and we weren’t sure we should go back. Needless to say, we RAN by them as fast as humanly possible!

How this Failure Leads to Success:

Outside of improving my time in the 40-yard dash, getting too close to alligators made me learn better safety protocols. So we turned to the Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries website. According to LDWF, most alligators, if left alone, will move on and are generally not a threat to people. However, they do recommend that if you have a close encounter with an alligator, like we did, back away slowly. 

My Failure to Make Amends that led to Success

Asking for forgiveness is HARD! I have often said that my Making Amends Bucket List is easily the hardest list I have created. Perhaps because means I have to not only reach out to those I have hurt but then admit my faults to them. So how can someone fail when trying to say they are sorry? 

1) I haven’t even tried yet

The Fail:

When it comes to making amends, I am a Failure! Why? Because, even though I think about the various people on the list that I have wronged, I have yet to take action. At one point, I tried to find one of the people on my list. But it was a struggle to connect with them and thus I just stopped trying.

How this Failure Leads to Success:

To be honest, it is hard to find success here. Now let me clarify that success will not be measured by obtaining forgiveness from those whom I hurt. Rather, success comes in admitting my faults to the person whom I hurt. Also, when I share here, it not only humbles me but reminds me that I need to try harder. So hopefully my failure leads to success by recommitting myself to try again. 

My Failure to Help Others that led to Success

They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions. But can you actually be a failure when you help others? Maybe. Now don’t get me wrong there is no better way to leave your mark on the world than by finding ways to help others. Plus, there are even studies that helping others can even help you live longer. However, sometimes you might do a bit more harm than good if you don’t plan properly or try to cut corners. 

1) Our Little Library made us ashamed of our-SHELVES

The Fail:

I am not a good carpenter! Not that it is beyond my skill set but I neither have the tools nor the patience to build something with my hands. But that didn’t stop me from wanting to build a Little Library to put out in front of my house. Of course in typical fashion, I had dreams of grandeur of the coolest looking little library packed with books where people would stop by to pick up or share. But rather than buying an official kit from the Little Free Library association, I came up with a “genius” idea to use an old wine crate! Of course, I had great intentions and it all started out great. But having it in New Orleans where it rains all the time or is humid most other days, it all became a big problem. Instead of helping my community with a fun book exchange, my cutting corners lead to a moldy science experiment!  

How this Failure Leads to Success:

Unless the goal was to spread black mold or test the relative breakdown rates of paperback novels, then it is pretty obvious that my little library was a bust. But throughout the whole process, I learned a lot about how to do it better the next time. I realized that if I wanted to create a unique little library for my Irish Channel neighborhood, then I need to figure out how to deal with environmental factors. It also reminded me that there are no short cuts when trying to do something right! Now, this doesn’t mean you can’t do it differently or better, but you have to do it right. Otherwise, you might be sending someone home with a book that even Dr. Who can’t fix.

2) I took my best friend on a Death March

The Fail:

One of my favorite Helping Others Bucket List items is by far #103) Fulfill 1 Bucket List Item for Anyone who helps me with 1 of mine! It is such an amazing feeling when someone gets to tick off a dream item because of your efforts. So, when my best friend Brian shared that he always dreamed of summitting Mt. Whitney and then backpacking the Pacific Crest Trail, I jumped at the chance to make his dream come true. But there was one problem, Brian was a beginner backpacker and not 100% ready for the physical demands of the trail. Don’t get me wrong, he trained. But with all my personal hiking experience I should have directed him better when we planned out our trek. Instead of starting at a pace of 8-10 miles each day, and then slowly working upwards, we planned most days at 15 or more. This wouldn’t have been too bad except that we had to cross over a million peaks of the Sierra Nevada from the Whitney Portal. 

How this Failure Leads to Success:

Luckily we took care of summitting Mount Whitney by day 2. So at least we were able to succeed at standing at the highest point above sea level in the lower 48 states. But by day 5, Brian was done and I was pretty beat up as well. It was a pretty humbling as we sat at the Twin Lakes about 23 miles from Lone Pine. But in that moment of humility, we learned that when life throws us obstacles we can easily change course. Even though we hadn’t made it to Mammoth Lakes we could still enjoy the moment. Instead, we relaxed, met some friends who let us fly fish with them, and recovered in some of the most beautiful parts of California. 

My Failure to keep this post short leads to Success

If you made it this far, congrats! You survived another session with little Eric-Talks-A-Lot! But hopefully, you had a great laugh as we shared our different types of failure. I am sure by reading all the bloopers we have had chasing the many items on the Bucket List Project, you realize that we obviously Love to Fail! But, also, I hope you learned that there are many benefits to failure and that it isn’t always a bad thing.

Sounds like a weird way to introduce myself at a meeting or intervention but Failure has recently been a topic in our house. Why? Because, when chasing the many items on our Bucket List, sadly we have had some failures. But that is okay…REALLY! However, failure often comes with negative connotations like you aren’t good enough. Therefore, I believe that this sort of outlook desperately needs to be changed! So, is failure good when chasing your bucket list? The short answer is yes!

Why Failure is Good

They say that failure is a part of life. I can sense the eye rolls reading that first sentence. I mean doesn’t failure equate to a lack of effort, not giving it your all, or worse yet, weakness? Maybe. But in reality, if you are failing at something it truly means you were at least trying, right? Now, don’t get me wrong, failing at something, especially an item on your bucket list doesn’t lessen the pain or embarrassment. But, if you change your perspective, you will see that failure is good.

1) Failure is a great lesson in Humility

In this day and age, we all want results and we want them now. However, when we fail at a task and delay success, it can often feel horrible. In many situations it can even convince you to quit on your dream. But one of the biggest benefits of failure is that it teaches you humility. When we fail, it allows us to recognize that we are human like everyone else. It also helps us self evaluate so we can try again later. Even Ghandi, in his autobiography, The Story of My Experiments With Truth, admitted, “I have humility enough to confess my errors and to retrace my steps.” 

2) Failing clarifies your Commitment to the Goal

Have you ever been 100% committed to a goal but then you quit after you failed the first time? Don’t worry, we aren’t judging you. In fact after attempting and failing a few of our Bucket List items like reading certain books on our Personal Growth Bucket List, we quit too. I mean have you ever tried to read Grimms’ Fairy Tales? It is freakin hard and really dark! But when you fail at a certain task, it is then that you can clarify your commitment to the goal at hand. Don’t get us wrong, this isn’t a pass to quit. But often we add items to our various bucket lists that seem like a good idea but aren’t as great in real life. So, when you fail, step back, envision the reward, and if it is still what you want, re-commit yourself to the goal!

3) Failure helps you solve the problem safely

Now in no way is failure good if you hurt yourself or put yourself into a dangerous situation! We don’t want a sudden influx of emails with photos of broken bones, arrest photos, or videos of bad situations. But one of the best benefits of failure is the way it teaches you to fail better and more importantly in a safer manner. When learning how to do something, aspects of it may be inherently dangerous. But because of the failures of those who tried before you, you learn how to attempt it in a safer way. It is because of these types of failures that humans have created safety gear, protocols, and rules to protect us. So if you fail the first time, ask for help from those who have gone before you. 

4) Failure reveals your true support system

I am sure we sound like a broken record but we will say it again, failure is a part of life. But we reiterate it again because failure isn’t just a part of YOUR life but everyone’s. So when determining if failure is good you need to remember that you are not alone! When you fail, it is a perfect time to reach out to your support system. Whether it is friends, family, or close work colleagues, asking for help is key to turning your failure into success. Don’t get us wrong, your support system may not be able to directly help you. In fact, sometimes you still have to accomplish your goals on your own. But, there is something truly magical when others simply root for you. This was always the case for us with my mother, Lilian Madan Gamble. She often wasn’t physically able to help, but no one ever cheered louder and reveled in our success more than my mom.

5) Being a Failure turns you into a resource

In this day an age, most of us have been to a conference or watched a motivational speaker online who shares their story of how their failures led to success. It is always amazing how they overcame the odds and rose above to their challenges to win. But that kind of ability isn’t reserved for the few. You too can help and inspire others with your story no matter how big or small it is. See when you learn from your failure and overcome challenges it allows you to empathize with others who face similar situations. Thus, the lessons you learn allow you help others win as well. 

6) Failure can help you get physically stronger

It is hard to argue that Michael Jordan may be one of the greatest basketball players of all time. But did you know that Jordan was considered a physical failure in high school? In the story, Michael Jordan: A Profile in Failure, author Jeff Stibel reveals that at Laney High School back in 1978, Michael wasn’t really an outstanding basketball player. Couple that with the fact that he was physically smaller than other players, the coaches decided he wasn’t good enough to play varsity. But Jordan didn’t let that stop him. Instead, he accepted his role on the junior varsity team and put in the work both on the court and in the gym. In accepting that failure is good but doesn’t have to be final, he became stronger and more confident which led him to one of the most remarkable careers in all sports. 

7) Failure makes you mentally stronger

Another benefit of failure is how it makes us mentally stronger. Often failing can feed our fears and even lead to depression. This of course is natural. But if you stop, reflect, and decide to confront those fears it can possibly lead to great success. Don’t get us wrong, it won’t be suddenly easier because your initial fears may be rooted in real concerns. But by confronting them, it can help you really find ways or inspire you to research better ways to overcome your previous failures. Besides, one of the biggest mental pains most people feel is regret. So by facing your fears head on, you are more willing to take the risks that could lead to your success.

8) Failing makes you appreciate your success

We all see those stories of people who never gave up and ultimately found success. But did you know that the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), Colonel Harland David Sanders, was a big failure when he started? He had many jobs while trying to sell his famous secret chicken recipe but he couldn’t find anyone to work with him. In fact, 1,009 folks told him he was crazy. But even at the ripe age of 62 he refused to give up and finally in Salt Lake City, Utah the first KFC opened. Then some 12 years later, Sanders sold the company for $2 million dollars! How sweet is that? We share that story because imagine his feeling of joy when that first KFC opened in Salt Lake City and the start of his dream finally came to fruition. I am sure in the previous years if felt impossible to make happen but when it finally did, the sense of accomplishment was likely unmatched!

Can you remember when you last tried something completely new? Maybe not; most of the time, people tend to stick to what they already know, afraid to step out of their comfort zones. This is entirely understandable, and it’s not surprising if this is the way you live your life. In truth, there is nothing wrong with being comfortable, and there is nothing wrong with not trying new things, but when you do try them, wonderful things can happen. So it might be worth considering attempting something out of the ordinary. Read on to find out why it’s good to try new things.

Time Slows Down

A strange thing happens as we get older; time seems to speed up. When we’re children, days and weeks stretch ahead forever. As we grow up, that time seems to compress, and by the time we are in middle age, days go by in a flash. You might think back and wonder what you have done over the past week, month, or even year – and this is because you have stuck to the same routine, so there is no real way to tell one day from the next. 

When you try something new, that day will stick in your memory. The more new things you try, the more days will stay with you. The result is that time feels as though it’s slowing down, and you will have many more memories to enjoy. If you can try to do something new every day, your life will become much more exciting and full.

You Will Stimulate Your Brain

One of the best things about trying new things is that your brain will be stimulated, and studies have shown that a new activity such as skiing or pottery or even preparing for a new activity such as buying a new ski boot bag or looking for old clothes to wear in the pottery studio, can enhance your brainpower. This is especially true when it comes to your creativity. 

Every time you are in a new situation, your brain has to work harder, learning how to deal with this new scenario. You will also develop new skills as a result. So your brain is growing and thriving, something that is crucial at all stages of life. The more new things you allow yourself to try, the healthier your brain will be. 

You’ll Find Your Sense Of Adventure

Another compelling reason to try new things is that you will find your own unique sense of adventure, and in doing so, you will overcome any fears you might have had. Fear is just a reaction to anything you are unsure about, anything unknown, and once you know what to expect after trying something new, your fear will disappear. 

 Once your fear is gone, it will be replaced by a sense of wonder and excitement that will make you feel happy and boost your mood incredibly. It makes no difference if the thing you are doing is big or small, if someone else finds it scary or they wonder why you do; every adventure is your own, and every new thing will benefit you in some way.

For those who don’t know, on July 17, 2021, I (Eric) along with Chris Nolan will be Climbing Devil’s Tower for ALS. It is a daunting bucket list item that to be honest, kind of makes me nervous. But despite my apprehension, this climb will hopefully be a way we can educate others about those with ALS. Plus, we are doing it to honor Chris’s brother Sean. Back in 2016, Sean was diagnosed with ALS. But in talking with Chris, we also wanted to find a way to do this for others. So, we came up with an idea to Climb and to Pray Devil’s Tower.

A History of Praying while Tackling a Bucket List item

A few years back, I undertook perhaps one of my greatest bucket list adventures, the Camino de Santiago. To tackle this pilgrimage, I took the traditional and most common route, known as the Camino Frances. Essentially, it is a 490-mile walk from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port on the French side of the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The purpose was to walk to a holy site where it is believed that the remains of the Apostle St. James the Greater are buried.

Now people embark on this adventure for many personal reasons. Some walk as part of a spiritual retreat and others to discover themselves. There are even some people who spend the 30-day walk in hopes that a miracle touches them or someone they love. For me, it was a combination of it all because I had kind of lost my “way” with my life.

So, I wanted to find my way back and the idea came to me to Walk and Pray.

To do this, I had decided to commit a portion of my daily activity to prayer while walking The Camino. But I didn’t want to make it all about myself. So I asked for the personal intentions of others. Essentially, every morning at the start of my walk. I would focus on my personal intentions for that day. Then I would focus on the intentions of another and then pray the novena for both our intentions. As I continued to walk, I tried to stay in reflection of that daily prayer and intentions of the day.

Why we want to Pray while we Climb Devil’s Tower

Now, of course, we are raising money for two different ALS foundations to donate in Sean’s name. We are raising money to donate in Sean Nolan’s name to both The Steve Gleason Foundation and The Tennessee Chapter of the ALS Association.

But while promoting something strange happened.

People kept sharing how ALS has affected their lives. Whether it struck them personally, ravaged a loved one, or affected a friend, countless people have been telling me their “ALS Story!” In telling me their story, they would passionately thank Chris, Darcee, & I and say how they felt like we were doing it for them too.

It was then that we realized that our climb was bigger than us and perhaps even Sean. We were going to need to climb and to pray Devil’s Tower in our task to summit the nation’s first National Monument.

Let us Carry your Intentions up Devil’s Tower

1. Please pray for us as we Climb Devil’s Tower on July 17th. Like I have said before, it is a bit scary. So if you can on July 17th, please pray for us to physically finish.

The logistics of carrying your intentions up Devil’s Tower

So, I am not going to lie, I have no idea exactly how we are going to be able to climb and to pray while tackling all 867 feet (265 m) from summit to base. I mean we don’t really want any excess weight during this nearly 7-hour climb. But what we would like to do is to write down all the intentions, prayers, and names on a sheet of paper and safeguard them in my pocket.

Before we climb, as a family we will read all the private intentions, prayers, and names of those affected by ALS. Then, safely tuck them into our pocket. Then if possible, at the very top, as we look upon the amazing views of Wyoming, we will repeat the process. However, if this isn’t possible when we finally return to the ground safely, we can then repeat the process in thanksgiving for a great experience that we shared with all of you.

There are several ways you can send us your intentions or the names of those who you would like for us to carry up Devil’s Tower as we climb and pray:

Bathroom, WC, loo, restroom, latrine, crapper, john, throne, whatever you call it, using a toilet can be quite an experience when you travel! I mean we have all heard horror stories of disgusting bathrooms, unusual set ups, or missing rolls of toilet paper, right? For us, this was never more true than when we were dealing with the bathrooms while driving a Tuk Tuk across India in the Rickshaw Run! Many of those were definitely not the best toilets in the world. But we get it! When you just finished off a behemoth 128 ounce Big Gulp, sometimes you just got to go!

Did you know that not all of the toilets in the world are scary or are the harbingers of disease? In fact, some of the coolest bathrooms in the world are even bucket list worthy!   

I can see it on your face now! You think we are so full of poop that there is a reason why our eyes are brown!

1. The World’s Largest Bathroom In The World

With over 1,000 toilets spread out over 32,290 square feet, the Egyptian-themed restroom located in southwest China is a 4 story monster of a bathroom! Of course the size of this bathroom is crazy. But what is even neater is that it has urinals shaped to resemble open crocodile mouths among other things! Plus, it is a quite relaxing pit stop as there is calm music and televisions to help you take care of your business. 2. The Most Flashing Toilet in the World

I am sure most people want to avoid the term “Flashing” when dealing with a bathroom! But the green and yellow Uster Public Toilets in Switzerland are truly some of the world’s best toilets to see! Although they are quite simple inside, these public bathrooms shimmer in the sunlight due to the 295 folded aluminum strips coating the exterior! 

3. The Best Toilets In The World For Climbers

For any avid backpacker or mountain climber, a trip to Denali National Park is a top bucket list experience. But what happens when you hear the call of nature beneath purview of the Kahiltna Glacier? Well, you hit up some of world’s best toilets in the world for mountain climbers! Now in most cases you are required to carry out any human waste. However, is some locations you will find a unique outdoor toilet where you can take in the views.

4. The Most Out Of This World Toilet

Perhaps one of the coolest bathrooms in the world, the Kumutoto Toilets are located on Wellington’s waterfront in New Zealand. These public bathrooms look like some sort of sci-fi aliens or red lobster tails. But don’t worry. Inside they are quite nice with modern amenities that will please even the pickiest of users.

5. The Wildest Bathroom In the World

For anyone who has checked out our Adventure Activities & Experiences Bucket List, you know that going on an African Safari is a top item we want to tick off. That is why the Wolwedans Boulder Camp in Namibia is always on our radar. Now of course you can see some amazing wildlife, but during those moments where you need to hit the head, don’t fret. Their bathrooms offer giant views of the red sand dunes, mountain ranges, and various local animals roaming the nature reserve.

6. The Nastiest Toilet In The World

Okay so not all of the bathrooms out there are the world’s best toilets. In fact, there is one located at Mount Elbrus in Russia that has the distinction of being known as the world’s nastiest. Located about 12,139 feet high on Mount Elbrus, this toilet is basically a pit of stench with no way to wash your hands after. We strongly recommend you bring your own disinfectant or antibacterial soap!

7. The World’s Most Beautiful Toilet In The World

Located on what is known as the Norwegian Scenic Route, the Uredd Rest Stop in Norway is considered the most beautiful toilet in the world! Named after the Norwegian “Uredd” submarine from World War II, the rest stop was redesigned in a minimalistic style to entice people to stop and take in the views. But if you can hold it, the best time to visit this amazing toilet is at night when the frosted glass seems to glow in the dark.

8. The Most Transparent Toilet In The World

For those of you who like to cater to your inner exhibitionist, then you will definitely want to test your boundaries at the public toilets in Tokyo! Created by the Tokyo Toilet Project, these colorful yet clear toilets are truly for the courageous. But don’t fret. Even if you can’t hold it any longer and really need to go, you won’t be advertising your goods. These restrooms actually have a technology where the glass becomes blurry to outsiders when someone enters.

9. The Tallest Outhouse In The World

When we used to go to summer camp, our parents always recommended that we try our best to get the top bunk! There is nothing worse than being “down stream” of other people’s body issues. So, you can only imagine which floor you would rather use at the 2 Story Outhouse at Cedar Lake in Michigan! Built in 1875, one theory is that this strange outhouse was once connected to a hotel or boarding house. But whatever reason it was built, you may want to avoid the bottom toilets no matter how bad you have to go!

10. The Best Loo With A View

If you ever head to the state of Washington for a backpacking adventure, then there is no doubt that you will want to check out North Cascades National Park. That is because this hike is loaded with amazing views of deep green canyons and gorgeous snow covered peaks. But perhaps one of the best highlights is to spend a night camping beneath the Sahale Glacier! Now of course you can always find a nice spot in the woods to go. But if you want to enjoy the views while doing number 2, find one of wooden toilets along Copper Ridge. 

11. The Strangest Toilets In The World

Afternoon tea is perhaps a quintessential bucket list experience when visiting the United Kingdom. But if you want to liven your formal experience up, perhaps consider making reservations at Sketch London. This funky yet quite fancy restaurant makes you feel like you are dining in an art gallery as the walls are adorned with countless pieces of art. But when the tea runs through you, be prepared for one of the strangest toilets in the world. The bathrooms are filled with toilets shaped like Eggs all beneath a multicolored stained glass roof. Now if movies ever taught us anything, we all know to beware of the Pod People! But when you got to go, you got to go, right?

12. The Most Shipwrecked Toilet In The World

Whenever you watch movies like Castaway, Swiss Family Robinson, or Robinson Crusoe, no one ever talks about how they survived without a bathroom or toilet paper for that matter. But no need to worry if you are lost at sea in the Caribbean Sea! All you have to do is find Toilet Island off the coast of Belize. This small island a lone bathroom with an actual flushing toilet. But don’t stay too long because we aren’t sure how often they restock the toilet paper and those palm tree leaves look a little rough!

13. The Most Musical Toilets In The World

So I am not going to lie, we wish the Golden Stars Inn in Freiburg, Germany was using Saxophones to pee in cause Saxophones suck! But we do admire their creativity in repurposing these old German Tubas as urinals! Now as a classically trained French Horn player, I know a little bit about emptying out the pipes and spit valves. So heed my advice, be wary of where you put your shoes. Also, fair warning, these don’t actually make music when using them, so if you hear beautiful music, please consult a doctor immediately!

14. The Most Extreme Toilet In The World

I can still remember the excitement! It was Sunday night and my sister, parents, and I would set up the T.V. tables, turn on the Magical World of Disney, and sit down for dinner and a movie. Sometimes we would have leftover seafood from Friday night or other times my dad would make us “quesadilla sandwiches” and pop fresh popcorn. Occasionally, he would even grill up shish kabobs and make fresh hummus or baba ghanoush. But perhaps one of the best memories I had growing up of this Sunday night family tradition was when he made us Grandmom’s Pizza Pie!

Restoring a Family Tradition 

I was reading a story about Michael Strahan and he was describing his favorite memory. He said, “I have the best memories as a kid eating ice cream. It was a family tradition that I had with my father. It was nice.” 

This got me thinking about my own past while creating my Personal Growth Bucket List. Whether I wanted to make them for myself or give them to my future family, I wanted to create amazing memories.

See, growing up, we lived pretty far from family. Therefore, it was up to my parents by themselves to find ways to create memories for our family. It couldn’t have been easy doing it somewhat alone. That is why our Sunday dinner was often my favorite family tradition looking back. It was during those nights that we laughed, talked about what was coming up, and just relaxed together. It was a memory I will carry for all time.

Therefore, it became quite evident that in order to accomplish my goal, I needed to restore a family tradition. I needed to learn how to make Grandmom’s Pizza Pie!

How to Make Grandmom’s Pizza Pie

So let me start of with some disclaimers about myself! In no way am I, or do I consider myself a chef, a cook, a food blogger or anything of the sort. I do like to make good tasting food, but in all reality, I am a recipe follower who needs to go down the list and check all the boxes off as I complete them! I mean seriously, what do you think this whole Bucket List Project thing is but one giant check list!

The second disclaimer is that no one in my family is Italian, including my Grandmother, Armen Gamble. She was actually Armenian so if you want some Baklava or dolmades she had some amazing recipes. Plus, to be honest, I am not 100% sure this was an actual creation of hers or just something she found and shared with my dad and thus we called it Grandmom’s Pizza Pie.

Now, I am sure some of my best Italian friends will have better recipes for a deep dish pizza pie. They may even have ways to help or improve this one. However, this is the recipe that was passed down to me as part of my family tradition. It is the one I can vividly remember smelling in my house and to be honest, it makes my heart happy.

So without further ado let’s discuss how you too can make this recipe for your next family dinner! 

The Ingredients

Like I said, when making dinner, I am a check list, recipe follower. So if you are like me, then you will be quite happy with this recipe for pizza pie because it doesn’t need much, anything unusual, or anything expensive. Personally, it drives me nuts when I see a recipe online and it asks for some bizarre ingredient that you can only find at one store in a mountain in Tibet that is only sold at $523.00 per pound yet you only need a teaspoon! 

If this is truly my Grandmother’s recipe, then I am sure you can find most if not all of these ingredients at your local grocery store. We were able to obtain everything we need from our local Walmart. So if you like to shop online or like to pick up curbside, then click here to get your ingredients from Walmart Grocery online!

So here are ingredients you will need for this recipe:

• • 1 lb Ground Beef
  • ¼ lb grated Mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ tsp Minced Garlic
  • 1 tsp Parsley or Italian seasoning
  • 6oz can Tomato Paste
  • 8oz can Tomato Sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups Bisquick
  • 5-6 TBSP Milk
  • Salt and Pepper

Instructions on making the Pizza Pie

When it comes to making my Grandmom’s Pizza Pie recipe, most of the prep work before baking is pretty easy to follow. First, you are going to want to preheat the Oven to 400°.

Then in a large non-stick skillet, brown your beef. As it browns, add garlic, parsley, and season to taste with salt and pepper. Now, while your meat is browning, make the pie crust by adding milk to Bisquick. You should stir it with a fork until dough forms into ball and it should not be too sticky.

Now after the dough has been made in the pan, roll it out on a floured dusted board or table. You are going to want to shape it to fit a 9” pie dish. 

Learn from our mistakes: So as you see in the picture above, I originally spread out my dough on a wax paper covered in flour. I thought this would be less messy but in reality, it was a disaster. The dough got stuck to the wax paper and essentially, I had to try it again on just the table. Growing up, my dad just used our kitchen table. He would dust 1/3rd of the table with flour and then roll out and knead the dough. So that is what I did the 2nd time and it came out perfect. 

Then when the dough is kneaded, add it to pie pan or baking dish. My family tradition was always to add the dough to a glass pie dish but I am not sure if that was a true tradition or just because that is what we had. As seen above, we used a very classic pie tin and it still worked perfectly.

After meat mixture is ready, place it in the crust covered pie pan. Then you will cover the top of the beef with grated Mozzarella cheese. Make sure you spread the cheese evenly over all meat.

Now here comes the tricky part, if you are messy like me. Next you are going to need to spoon tomato paste over meat. Of course tomato past is kind of thicker so go slowly and try to spread it everywhere. We used one of those plastic cake icing type spatulas and it worked great. 

Then after you have spread the tomato paste over the whole top, pour your tomato sauce over that. You are going to want to make sure that the tomato sauce completely covers the meat.

Then when you are done, take your pie over to the hot oven and bake at 400° for approximately 25 minutes. This of course is the time when you clean up the kitchen table that you now have turned into a science experiment gone wrong!

Fun Addition: Growing up, my dad often had or perhaps even made extra dough. He would then take that little bit of extra dough, flatten it out onto a flat pizza pan. Then he would cover it with any remaining sauce, cheese, and Italian spices and bake it up for about 5 – 10 minutes. He would then offer us little deformed pizza appetizers while the full deep dish still baked. So if you have extra, don’t waste it…have a snack!

Now with all things that come out of the oven, the insides of this pizza pie are really hot! I am sure it is not part of your family tradition to burn the insides of your mouth! So please let it sit for about 5 minutes before serving. You will know when it is fully done when not only the pie crust becomes golden but pie inners are set.

While the pie cools, this is often a great time to get your sides ready like salad or peas or whatever your family enjoys. But we recommend to grab all family members together, set the table, pray, and get ready to create some wonderful memories with your new family tradition.

Ronald Reagan once said, “All great change in America begins at the dinner table.” It is quite evident for me that some of my best memories were created at family dinner. Grandmom's Pizza Pie: A Family Tradition

Prep Time 10 minutes

Cook Time 40 minutes

Total Time 50 minutes

Ingredients

• 1 lb Ground Beef
• ¼ lb grated Mozzarella cheese
• ¼ tsp Minced Garlic
• 1 tsp Parsley or Italian seasoning
• 6oz can Tomato Paste
• 8oz can Tomato Sauce
• 1 1/2 cups Bisquick
• 5-6 TBSP Milk
• Salt and Pepper

Instructions

1. Pre Heat Oven to 400°
2. Brown beef in large skillet, add garlic and parsley, and season to taste with salt and pepper.
3. While meat is browning, make crust by adding milk to Bisquick, stir with fork until dough forms into ball – should not be too sticky.

8. Let sit 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

If you are reading this, congratulations, you survived 2020! But now we have all started a new year and that means setting new bucket list goals for 2021! 2020 was a hard year for us as it was for many of you! Between losing my mother, Lilian Madan Gamble, in March and then being hit with a global pandemic, not much happened with our Bucket List Project. But now we are gifted with a new year and that means hopefully new hopes and goals!

So what are our new bucket list goals for this year?

When reflecting on our 2020 bucket list goals and looking back at our 2020 Completed items, we realized that we kind of dropped the ball. We could make a lot excuses and most were legitimate. But to be honest, perhaps one of the biggest failures was that we just didn’t prioritize our bucket list goals.

To remedy that, I busted out my old Bucket List Project notebook, sat down with Darcee, and together we decided on some key points that we wanted to tackle this year. Now, when deciding on what to do we looked at all the different categories and essentially decided to try and tackle 3 items per list.

So, without further ado, I present our Bucket List Goals for 2021! We hope that this list will inspire other members of Gen X and Gen Y to reflect and hopefully prioritize their own goals for this year.

In America, we may love football and enjoy basketball, but there is no doubt that baseball is still our true love. This is probably because from a very early age, both boys and girls play hit the dirt fields of their local parks. But maybe it is more about the bonds that baseball creates.  Whether you are watching your favorite team on the couch with friends or taking part in the 7th inning stretch with your dad at a famous baseball stadium, baseball can connect us all. So it is no wonder that many people have it on their Adventure Activities & Experiences Bucket List to visit certain baseball stadiums!

In fact, our friend John Alo-Sweeney, aka: Mana’Olanakeiki Alo, has it on his bucket list to continue and visit each baseball stadium in the MLB. But why would a Yankee’s fan want to ever visit another team’s stadium? Or why would anyone want to try a hot dog and cracker jacks in every stadium in North America?

My Ultimate Baseball Stadium Bucket List

I am the middle kid in my family. When I was a kid I felt that my dad and I weren’t that close, but somehow we had a common interest, the awesome game of Baseball. My dad was a big baseball fan and frustrated baseball player. He grew up idolizing players like Sandy Koufax, Mickey Mantle and Joe Di Maggio. He tried his hardest to get into the big leagues, but somehow his father pushed him to go to the military instead.

Baseball became my dad and I’s connection. He taught me the basics of baseball…how to throw and how to bat. When I won my first little league game, I will never forget it, he told me that I was finally ready to attend my first big league baseball game. Fortunately, we got to travel to New York City and the game was in the Original Yankee Stadium, “The House that Ruth Built.”

Going to a Baseball Stadium with Dad

I remember every detail of that day: stepping out of the #7 Train; the anticipation; the overwhelming feeling of “baseball energy;” the goose bumps when entering gate #3; and the euphoric excitement when the crowd started cheering. Wow, that was it. That’s when I was hooked.

Together, my dad and I enjoyed numerous games. We visited close to 17 cities and he always made sure we caught a game while we were there together. In every moment my dad and I spent together, I was happy.

The Day it all Changed

Then one day, we had a different conversation. He told me he would be going for his yearly checkup and he hadn’t been feeling well lately. We took him to the hospital for his checkup, and I sat in the waiting room – and waited – for what seemed like forever. After seeing the doctor, my dad told me he had to stay in the hospital over night to have more tests. At first, I couldn’t understand why he had to stay longer and I never really asked why. Months passed and finally we were told that he was really very sick. He was diagnosed with Colon Cancer.

Years of treatment went by. As with a lot of cancer patients, my dad had a lot of weight and at times it was startling how drained and weak he was. He always told me that as soon as he got out of the hospital, we would visit every baseball stadium and historic site from the past, present and future (they are always building somewhere).

A few days after he passed away, I vowed that I would continue his wish – complete his dream. In his honor, I would complete our ultimate baseball bucket list of visiting every stadium in North America.

Chasing our Bucket List Dream

Years have passed and I have slowly started fulfilling his wish. One city, one stadium, one baseball site at a time, I am getting closer to accomplishing his dream. One of his favorite stadiums was the Original Tiger Stadium in Detroit, I journeyed through barbwire, rocks and tall grass to find this field – what was once the Original Tigers Stadium – and it was worth every cut and scrape. It was 2010 when I got to visit this holy baseball land where greats like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jackie Robinson, and Roberto Clemente all played. It’s weird, but I felt a surge of energy in this sacred land.

Making Amends Bucket List Quotes

As I have said before, the Making Amends Bucket List is definitely one of the hardest to tackle. In fact it is so hard for me that I have not ticked off a single one of these since I started the Bucket List Project. Perhaps, this is because saying your sorry even for the smallest problems can be really humbling and scary. It has been one month since I lost my mom, Lilian Madan Gamble.

I struggle to write this post for many reasons. Perhaps, it is because it doesn’t really feel like she is gone yet. Or perhaps, it is because I am not sure it is quite proper to share such a post on a Bucket List blog. But, after much consideration, I decided to share this to not only honor my mom but also to perhaps inspire others with her story.

Lili, my mother, lost a long a tough battle on March 13, 2020 and the past month has been a mixture of all kinds of feelings and struggles for me. I loved and still do love my mom as any son would! She was one of my biggest supporters of The Bucket List Project. She loved hearing all about Darcee and my adventures around the world. But, she especially loved it and rooted hardest, when we worked hard on our Helping Others Bucket List to help others fulfill their own bucket list dreams.

Because of her, I am the adventurer I am. She so loved seeing the world, trying new foods, and meeting new people herself.  It was one of her best traits that I personally am glad she instilled in me. She also loved seeing me personally grow and I only hope that I can become the man that she so longed me to be.

So with that said, I wanted to share the eulogy I gave my mom at her funeral mass with everyone. Hopefully, it can inspire everyone to learn to grow, love one another, and perhaps even find a bit of adventure in this short life we all have. I have never had to write a eulogy before, so please forgive me if it is a bit lacking. For a son to write a eulogy for his mom is a near impossible task that I don’t wish upon anyone. But if you will allow me, I wish to present it now to all of our family and friends.

A Son’s Eulogy For His Mom

On behalf of my Grandmother, Lilian Madan, my sister, Lilian Catherine “Lica”, my wife Darcee, and myself, Eric Rafael, I would like to first thank Fr Pineda, Fr O’Hare, and Fr. Whitestone (this was changed to Fr. Walsh & Fr. Rodriguez) and everyone who helped us prepare for this celebration of my mother, Lilian Madan Gamble. With all that is going on in the world, your thoughts, prayers, efforts, and love for my mother have meant the world to us.

I have never had to write a speech like this before, so please excuse me because I am not as elegant as some of my uncles nor as linguistically skilled as my wife or sister. So, in preparation for today, I essentially had to researched how to do this.

A Eulogy vs. An Elegy

In my research, I found that often people get confused during times like this between an Elegy and Eulogy. To be honest, I didn’t know the difference either. So, to clear things up, I channeled my inner Tio Rafael and dug deep into the origins of each word. Here is what I found:

An Elegy comes from the Greek root word Elegos which roughly translates to a Song of Mourning. While, a Eulogy is derived from two Greek root words, “EU” which means Good and “LOGOS” which means speech. Thus, when combined, Eulogy translates to a Speech of Good or a Song of Praise.

So, why does this matter today?

I bring this up because in the last year or so, people have approached me to discuss my mom’s state of life. Conversations about her were sometimes full of sorrow and remorse. Adjectives were used like, Tired, Weak, Frail, Sickly, and even Depressed. Now, of course, those people saying these adjectives not intending them to be hurtful. But, these kinds of words could easily lead our thoughts about her life toward regret or mourning.

And that isn’t how I wanted my mom remembered.

I wanted this speech…this service…this day to be a Eulogy to my mother! I want mine and every memory that each of us carry of her to be a true Song of Praise!

Lilian Madan Gamble, The Benevolent

Therefore, I am petitioning all of you to remember your Daughter, your Sister, your Tia, Your Mina, my mother with a different adjective. I petition her to be remembered as: Lilian the Benevolent.

Now for those who don’t have your dictionary handy, Benevolent is an adjective used to characterize someone who has the desire to help others by doing good in this world. Benevolent is synonymous with words like charitable, good, kind, gracious, helpful, and unselfish.

Now being her son, of course, I would praise my mother with an amazing word as benevolent. But to provide evidence to support my petition, I offer you the following examples:

• Lili gave Gifts with Intention

If you have ever been on vacation with us or to a Madan Family Christmas, you will recognize one of these bags! Poor Ali, Lica, and even Darcee have at one time been ”tortured” with the task of loading up bags like this for others on behalf of my mom. Often when receiving them, a person might see a random collection of bizarre trinkets and some were. But my mother didn’t see it like that. With these bags, she used whatever resources she had and tried to find items that matched something she thought you needed or could help you. For example, with her brother Ramon, she always insisted we overload your back with extra beef jerky and beef Slim Jims because in her mind she thought of you as strong! Thus, she wanted to make sure he had all that extra protein to keep you strong. And she tried her best to do that for everyone all the time. She always tried to give with intention even as silly as it seemed to us.

• Lili Gave us the Gift of her Faith

My mother, much like her own mother loved her faith. She often prayed for godchildren, her brothers and sisters, and anyone she could remember. To be honest, I probably gave her enough disasters in her life to fill her prayer intention card alone, but she always thought of who needed prayers and added them in as well. She worked hard to instill the faith in her children as well, and because of her efforts and prayers, I truly believe it helped both her and I find Darcee!

• Lili Gave her service as a Nurse to a countless number

In the first Epistle of Peter, chapter 4, verse 10 it reads, “As Each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s Grace”

My mother was given a skill for Nursing and thus used it to serve many people. For over 30 years, my mother was a registered nurse in New Orleans, Atlanta, and Virginia. She tended to the sick, the seriously injured, the elderly, the lost and forgotten, and even the dying. There was really no patient she wouldn’t help, and she would never say no to anyone in need of medical care. There are countless stories of her caring for the bedridden. She would often just take on the rolls of feeding them, cleaning them, or sometimes just tenderly holding them so they could feel connected again. This kind of gracious care can be seen in how she showed up and cared for her own father at the end of his life.

And Finally,

• Lili Gave the Gift of her time

My mother wasn’t the most mobile of people, so if you wanted to talk to her it was kind of easy to catch her. Now, I am sure there were times when she wished she could run away from us, especially if I or Franco decided to share one of our long-winded stories.

Now her absolute favorite thing to do, besides talking with her favorite child, Nico, was to just laugh with all of us! She had such a great laugh.

But to be honest, she loved hearing everyone’s stories! She loved sharing her time with each and everyone one of us. It brought her so much joy sitting with all of you to hear about your adventures, your travels, your dates, how your work was going, or what great things you were doing in the world! Perhaps, she did this because it allowed her to join you in your life. But I truly believe she did this so she could then offer you praise and support in your joys and dreams! It wasn’t uncommon after talking to one of you that she would call me to brag all about the new job you got, or the awesome party you threw, or even as simple as the recent accomplishments your beautiful children had just accomplished. It was how she praised and supported you!

Now I am sure there are a million more examples to support my petition to remember my mother as Lilian the Benevolent. And in the coming days, weeks, months, and years, I ask that you share your own Songs of Praise of her.

There are no words to describe how much I will miss my mother. I pray that she inspires me and all of us to be as gracious, charitable, helpful, unselfish and well Just benevolent as she was!

I wonder what she is putting in all of those bags she plans on giving away in Heaven?

Sadly, Life Goes On

Sadly, life never does stop after you lose a parent. It will never be the same for me and my sister. But, I know that we will always carry our mother deep within our hearts. Personally, I know she will forever join Darcee and me in all of our bucket list adventures. I am sure I will see her everywhere in life and hear her laugh whenever I do something absolutely crazy or goofy. During this time, I am so very lucky to have Darcee, my family, and all of our friends who have reached out to support us and offer their prayers and thoughts. She loved so greatly and hopefully, I was able to honor Lilian Madan Gamble with a simple eulogy from her son.

Sometimes the most exciting adventure in life is made better with someone special traveling by your side! There is just something magical about having a Couple’s Bucket List & crossing off the many items together. However, not everyone who travels as a couple wants to travel to an all-inclusive resort or visit a theme park. Sometimes they want something a bit more active like an adventure race or a travel competition for adventure couples!

Why?

Perhaps, it is because couples who travel together tend to stay together! Or maybe it is just because traveling as a couple is a great way to test your compatibility. A couple’s adventure competition takes it one step further. Nothing clarifies a relationship more than seeing how your loved one handles adversity while adventure racing around the world! But also, it is a great way for active travelers to express themselves to their partner in a fun environment.

Now, we don’t recommend going to extremes like climbing Everest or forcing your loved one to race a Tuk Tuk across India! That would be insane. However, the adventure tourism company, Competitours, does offer a travel competition that will satisfy any adventure couple!

How does this adventure tourism company offer a couple’s adventure that is bucket list worthy?

Well, since 2009, Competitours says they have been creating a unique travel competition vacation for couples who love adventure. Truthfully, all adventure tourism companies say that. So we found three couples who previously competed in this adventure race across Europe and asked if Competitours is truly the best travel competition for adventure couples!

Meet the Competitours Adventure Couples

We wanted to know why these couples entered, how they handled the different challenges, how it affected their relationship, and much more. So we interviewed these 3 previous adventure couple teams:

2. Jerry and Jamie from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, both love to travel as a couple and competed in the Competitours adventure race in 2015.
3. Dan and Elizabeth from Falls Church Virginia, love adventure. Elizabeth had once competed in Competitours with her mother. But Dan was quite jealous of her adventure. In 2011, Elizabeth battled Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. After Elizabeth recovered from her chemo treatment, she and Dan decided to enter Competitours in 2019 and take the adventure honeymoon they both desired.

Why did you enter the Competitours competition as a couple?

• • • Steve and Laura – “We were fans of the tv show The Amazing Race and stumbled across an online mention of Competitours. We actually told friends about it and found out they competed in 2013. So we jumped in for 2015! After we had done it once and won, we needed to return, which we did in 2019!”
    • Dan and Elizabeth – “I (Elizabeth) had been on Competitours once before with my mom, but my husband Dan had always been jealous of how incredible it sounded! So when I realized I might have the energy and availability to go on a real honeymoon, it was top on our list! We’re not into vacations that are just cocktails at the beach or passive observing. Instead, we like to over schedule ourselves with museums, restaurants, and anything meaningful to where we are! So a travel competition for adventure couples was right up our alley! Plus, we could do romantic European stuff for our honeymoon afterward since we were already there!”

Did you have an advantage as a couple compared to other teams?

• • • Jerry and Jamie – “No. The great thing about Competitours is that no one really has an advantage. When you think you might have something locked in, you get beat out by the team you’d least expect to win the challenge!”
    • Dan and Elizabeth – “We didn’t feel like we had an advantage just because we were a couple. I think most everyone on the trip came with someone they knew intimately. So they’d know each other’s strengths and weaknesses.”
    • Steve and Laura – “Even though we’ve been married for 11 years, we didn’t think that would give us any advantage over the other teams. I think the winning team a few years back was two women who had never even met before the competition.”

During the travel competition, what did you argue about most?

• Dan and Elizabeth – “I don’t think we argued much on the trip but then again we don’t ‘fight’ often! But we did argue trying to paint Lake Como, when neither of us could keep track of which water cup was clean or how much paint versus liquid to use!”
• Jerry and Jamie – “We argued only about what letter to pick in the hangman competition!”

What did you learn about each other during the competition?

• Steve and Laura – “The competition tends to highlight your skills and faults. For example, on a scavenger hunt, we recognized that one of us was better at creating a plan of attach and one was better at navigating and map reading. In the escape room challenge, we learned how to give each other space and solve problems. but also to ask for help when we’re stuck. On other days, we learned which one of us had less anxiety talking to strangers and who of us was better at coming up with creating content and acting in video challenges.”
• Dan and Elizabeth – “I knew Dan had built his own computers before, but I was amazed at his cardboard box car design and construction skills! A lot of these challenges mean seeing your partner do things they’ve never done in front of you if at all. Dan says that he thought he knew all my strengths already like navigation, puzzle solving, and public speaking. This just confirmed it to him!”
• Jerry and Jamie – “We learned that we both can travel in a carry on for 11 days, I (Jamie) can’t fly a drone and Jerry can’t paint very well! With fun stuff, we learned that Jerry likes to go really fast down the alpine roller coaster, while I’m pretty good at herding sheep! Jerry has much better taste buds while having dinner in the dark but I am a better skier, even indoors in Germany! We also learned that we make a great team using only one hand each in the cooking competition and building a beautiful flower out of chocolate! Lastly, we can really dance the Tyrolian dance and flamenco!”

What was your favorite adventure challenge as a couple?

• Dan and Elizabeth – “Dan loved everything and was very sad that a sudden wrist injury meant he couldn’t go on the via Ferrata. However, since he is a racing fan, he really enjoyed the unique experience of blo-karting on the beaches near Den Haag.”
• Jerry and Jamie – “We did something called Kite Sailing! The intrigue with this activity was how we used the whole wide beach, it was something no one had done before, and how quickly the teams mastered the skill. It was fun, fast, and hilarious! It was right up there as one of our favorite challenges, though climbing the via Ferrata is a close second. We love being outdoors and although we aren’t avid climbers by any means, the thrill of climbing and hiking this iron way is like no other.”
• Steve and Laura – “Choosing a favorite challenge is impossible, but sheepherding in Bex, Switzerland was amazing! It is an example of one of those adventure tourism ideas you just couldn’t do outside of Competitours. Perhaps you could go to a resort and rent a jet ski or hire a plane to go sky diving. But you can’t really show up at a local farm and say, ‘We’d like to herd your sheep today, will you show us how?’ It was so much fun!”

What was your least favorite adventure challenge as a couple?

• Steve and Laura – “The first time we competed the via Ferrata (basically scaling a Swiss Alp) was incredibly physically demanding and super scary for one of us who is not fond of heights! It was by far the most difficult and an exciting challenge. But we were so happy to be back on flat land afterwards. However, it did inspire us to try again on a via Ferrata in Andorra and another time in Italy!”
• Dan and Elizabeth – “Dan was so frustrated by painting in Italy though I (Elizabeth) loved it. Conversely, he loved cooking, but it stressed me out intensely and I had to ask him to do most of it. I mean how much forearm strength does it take to whisk a custard??”

Did your Competitours competition strengthen your relationship?

• Jerry and Jamie – “We are on pretty common ground most of the time, but to avoid potential conflict we came up with a plan on how to make a decision should we not agree on a certain challenge. Jerry’s birthday is on September 3rd while mine (Jamie) is on June 4th, so when it was an odd day, he got the final decision and when it was an even day, I got the final decision. Along with that, we couldn’t ever say ‘I told you so’ if things didn’t work out. Fortunately, we didn’t have to use it often, but when we did, it was nice to have a plan!”
• Dan and Elizabeth – “It should strengthen every relationship so long as you’re on the same page about fun versus hard core competition. Competitours is a safe environment where you’re encouraged to try new things  and where you will likely fail – at least partially! That’s a great gift because there are no stakes and no sense of social disgrace. These are all just people going off on an adventure that won’t think any less of you, thus the pressure is off. Then with no pressure, you get to see how your partner handles new skills, you get to practice your communication. Plus you build wonderful memories together of adventure activities that you probably would have never done as a couple before.”
• Steve and Laura – “The travel competition tends to highlight your skills and your faults. Thus, you can take all of these adventure challenges and translate them into areas that can strengthen a relationship outside the game.”

Was one of you more competitive than the other?

• Dan and Elizabeth – “Dan and I (Elizabeth) are both competitive but we also knew that enjoying the experience was more important that going balls to the wall. It helps that we would flare up in the skills we were best at for competitiveness, but we were decently well balanced in skills. That meant that one of us was usually calmer and able to reel the other one back in order to remind them to just enjoy the experience. Dan did sulk a bit when I did better in skeet shooting than he did, but we got points together as a team so that helped. While I sulked when he could sculpt amazingly well, yet I was trash. But again, that’s not the formation of a lifelong grudge.”
• Jerry and Jamie – “Neither of us are really competitive by nature, but we both wanted to win something and so we both tried hard and put forth equal effort in each of the challenges. The adventure challenges are so fun that it’s hard not to be competitive.”

What tips would you give other couples entering Competitours?

• Dan and Elizabeth – “Talk about what you both want to get out of the experience and then prioritize that. Personally, we’d say to have fun above all. Remind each other that you came on this couples adventure to experience what life had to offer. That includes the stink of working in a sheep pasture! We also recommend that you get lots of rest, boost each other up in your preferred love languages, and have your stress mechanisms in place.”
• Jerry and Jamie – “Go and have fun! If you win, it’s a great bonus. But if you don’t, you will still say it was the best trip of your life!”
• Steve and Laura – “Listening is extremely important in this travel competition. You have to listen to the instructions and to your partner. For example, on an Iron Chef challenge in Italy, one of us was trying to make ravioli and it cost us valuable time for the other to convince that person we were supposed to make tortellini! Another tip is to not focus on just scoring points. Yes, you need points to win but there are many opportunities for scoring. So even if you don’t excel at one challenge, the next one might be right in your wheelhouse. Plus the less we thought about points, the more fun we had. That led to us taking first place and winning the entire travel competition in 2015!”

Would you compete again as a couple or choose a different partner?

• Jerry and Jamie – “We’d never NOT do it together!!”
• Steve and Laura – “We actually did do Competitours a second time and we did choose each other. We’re very lucky that we enjoy spending time together, even when that time is a whirlwind competition and potentially stressful. We’ve worked hard to communicate completely with each other, which is key to both the travel competition and marriage!”
• Dan and Elizabeth – Dan and Elizabeth did not to answer this question. We here at the Bucket List Project didn’t want to press the question in order to protect them since Elizabeth originally took her mom the first time she ever competed in a Competitours travel competition.  We would hate to be the cause of yelling at the next family thanksgiving on who gets to go with Elizabeth during next adventure race.

Dang you crickets and your warnings that we cannot enjoy an endless summer! If you’re anything like Eric, your heaven will be 365 days of summer and sun and why not? Summer is the greatest season of the year. It is obviously great for those pursuing their various travel bucket list items. February – South Africa

If you’re chasing an epic Bucket List item in May, then you will want to head to in Peru. This is especially a great option if seeing Machu Picchu is on your Bucket List. With the rainy season over, you can expect warm sunny days and cool evenings in the land of the Incas. Plus with the temperatures averaging 77°F (25°C) and an average of 1″ of rain, it’s perfect weather for a hiking the Sacred Valley.

If you are looking for a more cosmopolitan experience then the capital city of Lima is a perfect destination. 1. Virgen de Chapi – Held on May 1st about 38 miles from the city of Arequipa, pilgrims walk across the desert from Arequipa to the sanctuary of the Virgen de Chapi. There they hold a nightly vigil to the most venerated statues of the Virgin Mary.
2. Corpus Christi – Probably one of the biggest festivals in Peru, Corpus Christi is celebrated throughout the country. However, the biggest celebration tends to be in Cusco where images of Saints are paraded around town to the main cathedral in Cusco. There, an overnight vigil occurs along with a great celebration of music, dancing, and food.
3. Festival de las Cruces – Held every May 3rd in many areas around Peru, the Festival de las Cruces honors the Holy Cross. However, one of the biggest celebrations is in Puno. During the festival, locals parade crosses around town to their churches. Though a religious celebration, you’ll find lots of music, dancing, and an amazing fireworks display at the end of the night.

So here are the best festivals or events happening in Morocco in June:

1. Cherry Festival in Sefrou – Held for 3 days mid June, the Cherry Festival in Sefrou celebrates their annual Cherry Harvest and it is awesome. About 30 minutes outside of Fez, this festival is the oldest in all of Morocco with their first held in 1920. Of course the festival is all about cherries, but there are also many activities to celebrate the culture. In particular, one of the highlights is to watch the Tbourida or Fantasia. Here ten horsemen wearing the traditional costumes race as one unit while attempting to synchronously fire their Moroccan rifles. Because of the cultural importance of the Cherry Festival, in 2012 it was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.
2. Fez Festival of World Sacred Music – The Fes Festival of World Sacred Music is a beautiful festival gathering all styles of music from around the world with the sole purpose to promote world peace. What is really unique is you get to hear amazing concerts in the ancient riads or near famous outdoor monuments. Plus many of the musical events are free to the public! 2. Apostle Santiago Festival – For about two weeks leading up to July 25th, the city of Santiago de Compostela celebrates the feast day of it’s namesake, the Apostle St. James. This is on top the normal mass held daily for the thousands of pilgrims who have walked the historical way to the church. If cocktails with friends on top of massive skyscrapers sounds amazing to you, then head to Bangkok. In November, you will enjoy temperatures averaging 88°F (31°C) with barely 2″ of rain. So you will have perfect weather for sipping martinis while enjoying the exciting the cosmopolitan nightlife. Plus, afternoons will be cool and dry which is perfect for exploring the Grand Palace and other major Buddhist temples.

Now, if you want to escape the big city life while still diving into the rich Thai culture and amazing food, then you will want to head north to Chiang Mai. December – Australia

What is the weather like in Australia in December?

If you prefer to see Jolly old St. Nick in board shorts and a tshirt rather than an overcoat and snow boots, then it makes sense to head to Australia in December! Being in southern hemisphere, December is the start of their summer so it is not super hot just yet. However, remember that Australia is a large country almost the size of the continental United States. So be prepared for different temperatures depending on if you are in the north, the South, or inland.

Since most people have it on their bucket list to take a road trip in Australia, chances are you will be cruising along the east coast.  In December, if you start in the middle at Sydney, you will have temperatures averaging 79°F (26°C) with maybe 3″ of rain. If you wish to start a little further north in Brisbane it may be a little warmer & a bit more wet with nearly 5″ of rain and 84°F (29°C). However, if you want to drop the top of the convertable you may want to start in the south in Melbourne where the temps are still 75°F (24°C) but barely 2″ of rain.

Now, if you want to escape to the outback to see Uluru or Ayers Rock, then head inland to Alice Springs. Much like the American Southwest, Alice Springs in general is an arid desert grassland. So be prepared for it to be dry and hot as  the weather will be about 97°F (36°C) with hardly 1″ of rain.

However, for those of you that want summer all year round, then Perth along the west coast might be your heaven. It is generally sunny all year round and except for June and July it hardly ever rains hard. In December, especially, you will find temperatures averaging 82°F (28°C) which will be perfect for relaxing at the beach, dining al fresco downtown, or taking a Quokka selfie or Rottnest Island!

1) Greyfriars Bobby in Edinburgh, Scotland

The Story about the Famous Dog: Greyfriars Bobby

Greyfriars Bobby is probably one of the most famous dog statues in the world! This statue honors a small skye terrier who’s loyalty to his master even after death is truly amazing. The story goes that John Gray was a simple night watchman in Edinburgh who died and was buried in Greyfriars Churchyard. However, despite his death, the loyalty of this little dog did not waver. It is said that for the next 14 years, the terrier would stand guard over his master’s grave until he himself finally passed.

2) Hachiko in Shibuya, Tokyo

The Story about the Famous Dog: Hachiko

Probably one of the most famous dogs in all of Japan, Hachiko has a similar story of loyalty to his master. The story goes that this Akita was adopted by Hidesaburo Ueno, a professor from the University of Tokyo. Hachiko would follow his master to the Shibuya train station where he would wait for his return from school. This went on for about 2 years until tragically Hidesaburo had a brain hemorrhage at work and instantly died. But Hachiko did not waiver and waited for his master at the station for the next 10 years until he too finally died.

There are several dog monuments honoring Hachiko around Shibuya so chances are you are going to run into one of them. For example, there is a beautiful one titled “Hachiko Finally Meets His Master” located on the campus of the University of Tokyo by the Nogaku Museum. However the most famous one seen in the picture above can be found at the Shibuya Station.

3) Balto in Central Park, New York City, U.S.A.

Balto was a famous husky sled dog that led a team of dogs 674 miles from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. What makes this story even more amazing was that his sled mushed through a raging blizzard in the heart of winter in order to deliver life saving medicines to the children of Nome who were dealing with a deadly diphtheria epidemic.

4) Waghya in Maharashtra, India

The Story about the Famous Dog: Waghya

Waghya (which translates to “Tiger”) was a small mixed breed dog of the Indian Warrior King, Shivaji Maharaj. According to legend, when Shivaji finally died, Waghya mourned deeply. Then at the cremation of his former master, the small “Tiger”, offered himself up as a sacrifice to his former master and leapt to his death into the funeral pyre.

Interestingly, his legend is the center of some conflict in the area. Back in 2012 a group of 73 Maratha extremists stole the statue. They claimed that there is no truth to the story and it degrades Shivaji’s legacy. However, Waghya was later returned to his location beside Shivaji’s tomb.

Unless you are wildly racing the Rickshaw Run in India, you will most likely be visiting Waghya from the city of Pune or possibly Mumbai. Waghya along with Shivaji’s tomb can be found at Raigad Fort.

5) Malchik in Moscow, Russia

The Story about the Famous Dog: Malchik

The story of Malchik (which translates to “Little Boy” in Russian) is somewhat a tragic one that ultimately brought the people of Moscow together. For about 3 years Malchik would hang out in the Mendeleyevskaya Station of the Moscow Metro. He seemed a playful and happy dog that befriended many of the regular travelers along with the local businessmen. However, one night a 22 year old woman by the name of Yuliana Romanova and her little dog got into a fight with Malchik. Yuliana would end up fatally stabbing the poor stray about 6 times and then running off.

Now here is where our tragic story becomes interesting. Most people would not even think twice over the death of a random stray dog. But the locals of Moscow, who had come to love this lost “Little Boy” became outraged. Yuliana was brought to trial, was found guilty of cruelty, and sentenced to a year of psychiatric treatment for schizophrenia. Then to make the story even better, tons of donations came in from around all of Russia to erect this beautiful statue to honor him.

6) Sweet Willy & Toby in Cottonwood, Idaho

The Story about the Famous Dogs: Sweet Willy & Toby

Okay, so Sweet Willy is not officially a famous dog statue per se but Toby most definitely is as he stands nearly 12 feet high beneath his beagle brother! Sweet Willy on the other hand is a bed and breakfast that as of 2004 was the worlds biggest beagle reaching over 30 feet. Both of these wonderful roadside attractions are the creations of artists Dennis Sullivan and Frances Conklin.

Well as of yet, there is no major motion picture about this crazy Bed & Breakfast. However, Frances Conklin did write a fun book called “Sweet Willy: A Noble & Absurd Undertaking“. This book not only shares the ideas behind & history of Dog Bark Park but it also talks about how two people came together to follow their own bucket list dreams and create a fun life together!

7) Islay in Sydney, Australia

The Story about the Famous Dog: Islay

Imagine sitting next to a beautiful fountain outside the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney, Australia, when you suddenly hear, “Hello, my name is Islay. I was once the companion of the great Queen Victoria. Because of the many good deeds I have done for deaf and blind children, I have been given the power of speech. If you cast a coin into the wishing well now, I will say thank you… Thank you. Woof, Woof!” That talking Skye Terrier is Islay, Queen Victoria’s favorite pooch.

Islay was a Queen Victoria’s dog for a mere 5 years until he tragically got mauled by a stray cat. However, the little dog must have made quite an impact on the Queen as she wrote of him fondly in her diary about how she loved how he stood on his hind legs begging for treats. (As portrayed in the statue).

How to Find the Famous Talking Dog Statue of Islay

To find Islay, you are going to want to head over to the Queen Victoria Building on George Street. There you will find a large life sized statue of the Grandmother of all Europe, Queen Victoria herself. But nearby you will find Islay. His fountain hides a ventilation shaft for a parking garage underneath the building.

There isn’t much at all about Islay except the writings in Queen Victoria’s Diary. However, there are tons of stories & books written about the Queen herself. Perhaps one of the more popular, is “Victoria: A Novel By Daisy Goodwin” in which Goodwin shares from the personal diaries of the Queen during her younger years. If you want to dive more into the life of the queen on TV, Daisy Goodwin’s book is also the basis for the PBS Drama: Victoria. I wonder who will portray Islay on the show?

8) The Brown Dog in Battersea Park, London

The Story about the Famous Dog: The Brown Dog of Battersea Park

So in reality there may or may not be an actual brown dog that this statue “honors.” However, the Brown Dog of Battersea Park has caused as much political strife in this London Community as Wagyha has in India. According to the story, around 1903, a University College of London (UCL) professor was accused of illegal and inhumane medical testing on a brown dog. He was later exonerated of all charges and even won a libel case against his accusers.

However, this did not thwart the community of Battersea. A progressive neighborhood in London, the community appalled by the actions of the Medical Students of UCL, erected a statue of the supposed Brown Dog with a scathing plaque attacking the University. This caused outrage among the medical students who would about a year later attempt to remove the statue and cause what is now known as the Brown Dog Riots! This would go on for several years between the students and the community of Battersea until the town council finally agreed to remove the statue and have it destroyed.

Then in 1985, a new Brown Dog statue was erected along with the original scathing plaque attacking the University College of London.

9) Fala in Washington, D.C. USA

It is not often we hear about an American President and his pet but Fala was Frankin D Roosevelt’s (FDR) side kick. It was said that the 32nd President took the little black Scottish terrier everywhere, especially throughout his World War II fundraising efforts. However, Fala, like most in the political eye, was not without scandal. During Roosevelt’s 1944 presidential campaign, Republicans charged that FDR had accidentally left Fala behind on the Aleutian Islands while on tour there. They accused the president of sending a U.S. Navy destroyer to retrieve his little dog at an exorbitant cost to the taxpayers.

After FDR passed away, Fala attended Roosevelt’s funeral and went to live with the widowed former First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. During that time Eleanor wrote a newspaper column titled, “My Day”, where she often referenced her adventures with the little rascal.

There are actually 3 different famous dog statues of Fala in different parts of the United States. The first can be found at Puerto Rico’s “Paseo de los Presidentes” in San Juan. The second of the famous dog statues is inside the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park, NY. There you can also find Fala’s collar, dog dish, White House dog tags and other artifacts on display. However, the most famous of the dog statues of Fala is at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, D.C.

10) Gelert in Beddgelert, Wales, U.K.

The Story about the Famous Dog: Gelert

If you love legends or fables then the story of Gelert is bound to be one of your favorites. According to legend, the Prince of North Wales, Llywelyn returns from hunting to find his baby missing, the crib flipped over, and blood smeared all over the snout of Gelert. Llywelyn instantly draws his sword and stabs poor Gelert to death. As soon as he does this, he then hears the crying of his young baby under the crib and next to it, the corpse of a dead wolf who had snuck in and attacked the child. In his dismay, Llywelyn realizes that Gelert had not attacked the child but rather saved him from the fangs of the wolf! To atone for his rash actions, Llywelyn buries Gelert with a royal ceremony and legend has it he never smiled again!

11) Rover in Hartford, Connecticut

According to legend, a man went with his dog Rover to the Hartford Connecticut Hospital after he had just suffered a heart attack. As he walked in, he told his dog to “Stay” and the dog sat outside waiting for his master to return. Unfortunately, the man never recovered and later died in the hospital. However, Rover never budged from his spot waiting for his master to return. Many of the hospital staff encouraged Rover to leave and even during bad weather tried to take the dog home. However, Rover remained devoted to the end of his life.

12) The Sheepdog of Canterbury, New Zealand

The Story about the Famous Dog: The Collie Sheep Dog

The story of the Collie Sheep Dog of Canterbury is more of a mutt memorial to all the amazing sheep herding Collies who helped on the farms the McKenzie country region.

However, an interesting side story is how the area got its name McKenzie Country. Apparently, in March 1855, an immigrant by the name of James Mckenzie was caught stealing 1,000 sheep. He alluded authorities for a while but was later sentenced to five years hard labor after being found guilty. A regular Billy the Kid, McKenzie escaped from prison at least twice but finally was chained in irons and guarded nonstop. Then after spending 9 months in jail, a judge re-opened his case, decided he was actually innocent, and pardoned him.

There isn’t much about the Collie Sheepdog specifically, but you can always find stories about the area’s famous outlaw, James McKenzie. In 1977, there was even a short lived TV Miniseries called, “The Mackenzie Affair“. In terms of books, they come a little hard to find but the tv miniseries is based off a book of the same name by James McNeish.

13) Constantine (aka Kostya) of Tolyatti, Russia

In 1995 a German Shepherd was been riding in a car with a man and a girl. The car crashed and the girl was killed on the spot. The man was taken to a hospital where a few hours later he also died. The German Shepherd was apparently left at the crash site and there he waited for his owners to return and retrieve him. It is said that he would anxiously run up to cars looking for his owners but to no avail. Since no one knew his name, people called him “Kostya” which translates to faithful or steadfast. For the next 7 years, the locals tried to coax him to leave or even adopt him but he refused, waiting “faithfully” for his actual owners to return. Then in 2002, his body was found in a nearby woods.

Despite much searching, there aren’t any books or movies about “Kostya.” However, in 2013, a Moscow musician named Cat Sasha released a song entitled “Watchdog” on her album Intercity Traveler.

14) Los Perros De La Plaza in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria

There is a running somewhat crude joke that goes like this, “Did you know that there are no Canaries on the Canary Islands? It’s weird I know. Also did you hear about the Virgin Islands? Yeah, there are no Canaries there either!”

According to history, the indigenous people of the Canary Islands, the Guanches, had a rare breed of dog, called canem in Latin or Canarian hounds in English. They primarily used these dogs for hunting and were quite revered by the Gaunches and over time became the symbol of the Islands. When the Spanish arrived they were amazed by the amount of Canarian hounds and thus the islands were named for the dogs.

In general there isn’t much about the famous Canarian Hounds themselves, though author Goldeen Ogawa does feature the dogs in his Fantasy book, “Professor Odd: The Dogs of Canary Island“. With regards to movies or t.v. again there isn’t anything about the dogs. However, we did discover that the Canary Islands have been the featured back drop of many great movies including: Moby Dick (starring Gregory Peck), One Million Years B.C. (starring Raquel Welch), Fast & the Furious 6 (starring Vin Diesel & the Late Paul Walker), & Jason Bourne (starring Matt Damon) to name a few.

15) Morley’s Dog in Johnstown, Pennsylvania

In 1889, a dam burst in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and virtually destroyed the entire city. However, when James Morley returned to his flooded home amid the destruction he found his old metal dog lawn ornament still intact. So he took the old dog to the park and put it on display to inspire his neighbors. Much like what the Fleur de Lis symbol became to the locals of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, this old metal dog became a symbol of rebirth to the citizens Johnstown.

After 100+ years of dealing with the elements and all the kids attempting to ride him, the original metal dog lawn ornament was taken away for preservation by the Johnstown Area Heritage Association. It can be seen in the lobby of the town’s Heritage Discovery Center, at the intersection of 7th St. and Hwy 56/Broad St. However, there is a replica statue downtown, in a tiny park on the northwest corner of Main and Market Street.

When it comes to movies, if you can find it, there was a movie made in 1926 called “The Johnstown Flood” directed by the famous Irving Cummings who also directed many of Shirley Temple’s films including “Curly Top.” But if you cant then check out the 1992 “Johnstown Flood” movie on Amazon Prime starring Richard Dreyfus.

16) Zinneke Pis in Brussels, Belgium

Zinneke Pis (also known as Het Zinneke) is one of three “Pissing” statues scattered throughout Brussels. Manneken Pis is the first one created by Hiëronymus Duquesnoy the Elder around 1619. It depicts a naked little boy urinating into a fountain’s basin. Then in 1985, a Mr. Denis-Adrien Debouvrie, had Jeanneke Pis created as a way to leave his legacy in his neighborhood. The statue was created showcasing a little girl with her hair in short pigtails, squatting and urinating on stone that dribbles into a fountain.

That brings us to our famous dog statue. In 1998, famous Brussels scupltor, Tom Frantzen, decided to honor his own dog by creating a lifelike statue of him in his own neighborhood. Unlike it’s two predecessors, Zinneke Pis doesn’t actually pee. Oddly enough, in 2015 it was hit by a car but Tom restored it to its former glory!

Manneken Pis is relatively easy to find at the junction of Rue du Chêne/Eikstraat and the pedestrian Rue de l’Étuve/Stoofstraat. Whereas, Jeanneke Pis is a bit harder to find. She is located on the east side of Impasse de la Fidélité/Getrouwheidsgang (Fidelity Alley), a narrow cul-de-sac near Rue des Bouchers/Beenhouwersstraat. Sadly, she has been vandalized so she is protected behind iron bars. While, Zinneke Pis is also somewhat easy to find as he is located at the junction of Rue des Chartreux/Kartuizersstraat and Rue du Vieux-Marché-aux-Grains/Oude Graanmarkt.

Since Zinneke Pis was more of a homage to Tom Frantzen‘s dog, there is really nothing more about him in other mediums. However, the original, Manneken Pis has made cameos in several movies including 1986 Tom Hanks Movie, “The Money Pit“. In the movie, Hanks’ character crashes out a window, down his roof, into a wheel barrel, that rolls down a hill and ultimately into a fountain where a Manneken Pis replica pees on him.

17) Shep in Fort Benton, Montana

One day in 1936, a sheep herding dog appeared alongside a casket at the Fort Benton Train Station in Montana. Apparently, his master had died and his casket was loaded onto a train heading east back to his family. However, despite the train leaving the dog remained. For almost 6 years, he would greet every train that would roll in hoping to see his master climb off the car. During those years, the dog was given the name Shep by the station employees. Many people took care of him and he became well known to everyone who passed through. Then in 1942, sadly, Shep slipped onto the tracks before an oncoming train and was killed instantly. A few days later a massive funeral service was put on for Shep by the local Boy Scout Troop 47, The Great Northern Railroad, and everyone in Fort Benton.

There are two mutt monuments honoring Shep in Fort Benton. The first is at his grave on the hillside overlooking the town where there is a painted steel Shep cut out surrounded by lights. However, in town near the Missouri River, is a bronze sculpture erected in 1994 by Bob Scriver.

Shep has had his moment in pop culture. While he was still alive, he actually made it into a syndicated column in newspapers around the world in a Ripley’s Believe It Or Not comic. But in recent years, he was featured in “Shep: Our Most Loyal Dog” by Sneed B. Collard and Joanna Yardley.

18) Dzok in Krakow, Poland

A black mutt known as Dzok (pronounced Jock) is often considered “the most faithful friend ever” to the citizens of Krakow, Poland. According to his legend, in the mid 1990’s, Dzok’s first owner left one day only to suffer a heart attack and die. But Dzok waited patiently for one year outside for his master to return. The locals of Krakow felt for Dzok and some even tried to adopt him but he would not budge. Then, after constantly tending to him and feeding him, a widow named Maria Müller finally convinced Dzok to move in with her. However, in 1998 Maria also died and Dzok was taken to a pound. Somehow, though he escaped and made his way to the railyard where he was tragically struck by a train.

If you are in Krakow, the famous dog statue of Dzok is located on the Czerwonański Boulevard on the Vistula River in Kraków , near the Wawel Castle and the Grunwald Bridge.

After searching the web, there were no major television shows or movies that reference Dzok. However, we did find a cute looking children’s book by famed Polish author Barbara Gawryluk. The only catch is her book, titled, “Dzok: Legenda o Psiej Wiernoski,” which translates to “Dzok: A Legend About Dog Fidelity,” is in fact in Polish.

19) Fido in Florence, Italy

In case you didn’t know, Fido in latin actually means “I am Faithful.” So, it is not just a silly name for a dog made famous in the United States when Abraham Lincoln named his dog Fido. However, “faithful” definitely fits for Fido of Florence, Italy.

As the story goes, Fido was originally a wild dog running the streets of a small town known as Luco di Mugello. One day a brick layer named Carlo was returning from work. At the bus stop, he saw the dog injured in a nearby ditch. So, he picked up the dog, took him home, and he along with his wife nursed the dog back to health. They would then later name him Fido.

Healthy, Fido would every day wake up and follow Carlo to the bus stop in the central square of Luco di Mugello. Then he would sit in the square quietly awaiting his master to return from work on the evening bus. When Carlo exited the bus, it is said that Fido would greet him with joy and excitement! This went on for two years.

Then on December 30, 1943, in the midst of World War II, Carlo’s factory was bombed by Ally Forces and he died. That evening Fido sat at the bus stop waiting for Carlo to return but his master never came. He apparently then returned home to see if Carlo was there but could not find him. Then he returned the next day to the same bus stop to see if Carlo would ever come off the bus. This went on for a remarkable 14 years until his death on June 9, 1958. In case your counting, Fido went to that bus stop to find Carlo nearly 5,110 times!

There doesn’t seem to be many modern books or movies about Italy’s most faithful dog. But after much scouring, we did find and amazing scenes from an actual Newsreel from 1957 about Fido, from the Istituto Luce on YouTube. Fair warning it is in Italian but you will understand the story. Fido was also featured in the April 1, 1957 edition of Time Magazine under the story, “ITALY: Fido”

20) Bobbie the Wonder Dog of Silverton, Oregon

We have all heard the legend of a dog who takes an incredible journey back home to find his family. Well, the story of Bobbie the Wonder Dog is not a legend but actual fact. In August of 1923, Frank and Elizabeth Brazier, took their daughters along with their 2 year old Scottish Collie on a family road trip to Wolcott, Indiana. Along the way, the family stopped for gas and there at the station little Bobbie was attacked by 3 other dogs and ran away. After hours of searching, the Brazier family was unable to find Bobbie. They continued their trip to see their family in Indiana and then returned home to Oregon, expecting never to see their dog again.

Then 6 months later, on February 15, 1924, miraculously, Bobbie came hobbling back into Silverton. He looked a disaster with his toenails noticeably worn down to the nubs. According to the data, this little Scottish terrier walked at least 2,551 miles (4,105 km). He traversed across harsh terrain, swam across wild rivers, and hiked over the mountains of the Continental Divide all while managing to survive an extremely harsh winter.

There are actually several murals painted on the sides of many of the businesses in Silverton, Oregon honoring Bobbie’s incredible journey. But the famous Dog Statue and dog house are downtown, on the west side of S. Water Street a block south of East Main St.

Like Shep in Montana, Bobbie too made it into syndicated column in newspapers around the world in a Ripley’s Believe It Or Not comic right after his incredible journey. Then a short time later, he would even star as himself in the 1924 silent short film about his trek back home called, “The Call of the West“. But in recent years, the story of Bobbie the Wonder Dog fell silent until a book by Susan Stelljes titled, “Wonder Dog: The Story of Silverton Bobbie” was released.
