For those wanting a rustic and real-life western experience in Wyoming, the Heward’s Fully Restored 1920’s Sheep Wagon #1 Airbnb, may be one of the best Airbnbs in the U.S. Perhaps that is because this Airbnb was actually used on a Wyoming family ranch from the 1920s until the early 1970s as a working sheepherders camp wagon. Now you can spend your days there exploring the 65,000-acre ranch hiking, fishing, touring original homestead cabins, or just relaxing under an open sky beneath the stars. Because it is considered one of the Best Airbnbs in the U.S. it fills up quickly, but don’t fret because the family also has the Heward’s 1920’s Sheep Wagon #2 Airbnb with all the same perks!

Note: the #2 is no longer listed on Airbnb as of 2023

  1. This is awesome. I’ve actually looked into staying at a few of these places like the Navajo house in AZ, the Cave dwelling in Utah and really love so many of these cool rentals, especially that lighthouse in Oregon and the floating tiki hut in Florida.

    1. Very cool! I think that floating tiki hut in Florida is perhaps one of the most unique Airbnbs in the U.S. for sure! I can’t imagine why it isnt higher up on more people’s bucket list! I too am also very intrigued by the Native American type Airbnbs like the hogans in Arizona. It is very interesting to thing that the Natives of North America and the Natives of Mongolia along the same latitudes created similar type structures with the Hogans & the Yurts while being an massive ocean apart with no way to know about the other’s style.

  2. Wow, I love this list of AirBnBs! I am a big fan of AirBnB and would happily stay in any of these (apart from the hammocks!). There are so many quirky options, I kind of want to do a US road trip to visit some of these. Particular favourites include the lighthouse and the tipis!

    1. Thanks Laura, Yeah, Darcee Loves the Lighthouse too! Something about being at the end of a rocky coast line overlooking the water, makes a Lighthouse Airbnb in the U.S. perhaps one of the best for her!

  3. AirBnb is my favourite way of getting accommodation when I travel. I really like finding places with a difference and it’s a nice way to meet locals and get their tips…

  4. To be totally honest, we have never used Airbnb. We wanted to back in 2010, when we spent 5 months in the USA. We looked for long term places to stay in the Bay Area and found a few interesting ones which we decided to visit before deciding whether we wanted to rent it or not. We met with the houses’ owners and soon found out that Airbnb was not very honest… they decided to lower the monthly rent without asking the owners (most probably because there were less people interested in renting their house…). Some of our friends in Paris also used Airbnb to put their apartments on rental during their summer vacations, and were not satisfied at all. So… we never bothered using Airbnb. That said, we’re curious about the fairytale place in California. Not for a stay, but would like to have a peek inside though.

    1. I know right!! That place looks amazing with all the games and things to do inside. Is is probably one of the coolest Airbnbs in all of the United States for sure!

  5. WOW!!! This is one incredibly long list of AirBnBs…thank you so much for going to all this effort and sharing it…;)

  6. This will come in handy for travellers, all the information you listed will be so useful! Never tried to book an AirBNB before in the US, I must now!

  7. I am saving your post. Once, I resume my traveling habit. I might need this list of Airbnb.

    1. yeah, that seems to be a popular one at the top for sure. But I dont think it makes my top 10 cause the there are so many awesome and unusual Airbnbs in the U.S. on this list for our bucket list for sure. But if you go, send us pics!!!!

  8. What an extensive list! Thank you for compiling the best places to stay in different states because sometimes it’s hard to know which one is really good.

  9. This is an incredible list! I had to check my home state of Washington and the Shire rental there is gorgeous! I have always used Airbnb as my go-to for both long and short term rentals and on the whole have had amazing experiences with it. I honestly don’t know what I would do without the platform, and it’s great knowing that staying in one supports a local resident especially compared to staying in some international hotel chain.

    1. Couldn’t agree more Kevin. Love the idea of supporting locals over faceless chains too! The Shire Airbnb in Washington does look amazing. I can just imagine waking up and opening that round Hobbit Door to see the amazing valley and hear all that nature has to offer.

  10. What a wonderful collection. I hope in time I can travel too and personally see those places.

  11. You have the best list for sure, but definitely the cave in Arkansas is the winner! Now it’s time to find the right time to go there. Maybe this fall?

  12. You got me, my friend. Arkansas is one of the seven US states I still have to visit and I have a cave obsession. Now I know what my Arkansas trip will include!

    1. I know right, that looks so cool and what better reason to get you to Arkansas than to cross off two bucket list items in one shot! Though, I will say that Arkansas is a beautiful state so you might discover some amazing bucket list activities amid the Ozarks or on the Buffalo River!

  13. I hear all sorts of horror stories about Airbnb in the US, all about terrible guests who trash the place and nosey hosts who have cameras everywhere… But I have to say that the log cabin and the Navajo hogan are very tempting. That’s the great thing with Airbnb, every accommodation is unique!

    1. There are people who will complain about anything and everything I am sure and there are unfortunately people who ruin things for everyone. For example, I knew a guy who was a concierge in Sydney at a hotel called the Ovolo Woolloomooloo and he said that the he was shocked how often people especially the locals who were having a staycation would ruin hotel rooms there in his famous hotel. I never understand people sometimes.
But as for these Airbnbs I think they vet their guests pretty well. That is the best part of Airbnb is that you as a Host can also review your guest prior to booking.

  14. I am planning to travel to US later this year once things get a slightly better and these are some good options. We plan to do a Airbnb since it could a month long trip

  15. I absolutely love this post and will be bookmarking it right away. I love staying in unique places such as these and my top picks would be to stay in a mountain yurt, or a domed igloo in Alaska (I can imagine experiencing the Northern Lights from there!), or the cave hotel in Arkansas, or the Tiki Hut in Key West. Such beautiful places to stay, thanks for this informational and useful post!

    1. Yeah, not going to lie, that Tiki Hut in Key West may be the Coolest Airbnb in the United States for Sure! As long as I can go swimming, snorkeling, or grab a boat to play around the floating Airbnb so I dont get stir crazy out there!

  16. That’s a huge list of places. Loved most of them.We also like staying from airbnb.

  17. I like air bnb even though I rarely use it. I don’t stay for long so cleaning fee becomes a thing. But it looks so good I would totally stay in each house just to enjoy it

  18. Wow! What a great list. I love unique Airbnbs like this. Definitely great experiences you wouldnt get at a regular hotel. I love the cave one and the idea of staying in a boat has always interested me. I have got to start looking into more Airbnb options when I travel.

    1. Yeah the 2 or three different Cave Airbnbs in the U.S. are really unusual but really cool at the same time! I mean who would have ever thought of reverting back to cavemen days but making it all fancy!

    1. I dont know if it is just because it was the top one and people didnt scroll down or because you guys like to FREEZE but the Igloo in Alaska seems to be a lot of people’s favorite vote for one of the Best Airbnbs in the U.S.

  19. Personally I LOVE staying in AirBnB’s when we go on a trip. They can be hit or miss though. Our last trip we found an AMAZING place in London (UK). Reminds me I never blogged about it!

    1. Haha, that is awesome, I cant wait to read about your London Airbnb experience! We tend to stay in Airbnbs, homestays, or even Hostels when we travel because we love saving money but more importantly we really like being lost in a local neighborhood and possibly getting a more local experience. But you are right, they can sometimes be duds. Hopefully, none of these Quirky Airbnbs in the U.S. will fall into the Miss column!

    1. Yeah, a lot of my Wyoming family say that is one of their favorite too. I keep trying to convince them to come down to somewhere hot and wild but nooo!

  20. That’s a great list of airbnbs in USA, many of them quirky and adventurous. I can see myself staying in the domed Igloo in Alaska, perfect to see the Northern lights and the Oak Island airbnb in Maine enjoying the views and wildlife. 🙂

    1. Yeah can you imagine renting out an entire island and eating all the lobster the fishermen catch that day right off a boat! That Oak Island Airbnb may be one of the coolest Airbnbs in the U.S. for sure! I do love the igloo in Alaska as well but with my luck in chasing the Northern Lights, I will bring a sky packed with clouds!

  21. These AirBnB rentals are so unique. If I were to choose only one, I will choose to stay at that domed igloo in Fairbanks, Alaska. How cool is that to be able to sleep looking up at the Northern Lights! Bookmarking this article for future reference.

  22. As a Washingtonian, I must visit the hobbit house! I feel like the photos there would be incredible

    1. I know right! Can you imagine just opening up your Iconic Round Hobbit door and just setting up the tripod right outside of it as you grab your Hobbit pipe and capture the entire valley on film! The Hobbit House in Washington by far is one of the coolest Airbnbs in the US we found for sure!

  23. That Ohio barn triggered me in a way I can’t explain. It was awful! That said, I so wanna try glamping one day and the Catskills one in New York looks good. There are also glamping retreats in NYC but not with air bnb. I see haunted manor and hotel with 3 haunted spirits and I say, thanks for the offer lol.

    1. Whoa, sorry that the Ohio Barn Airbnb brought up some funky feelings for you. But with that said, I like how you are similar to me with a desire to hit the great outdoors but with a little class with the Glamping Airbnbs! I will say that all of the Haunted Airbnbs in the U.S. that we found are definitely on Darcee’s Bucket List too. Ever since she moved here to New Orleans with me, she is always fascinated with Ghosts & Spirits!

  24. Some of these are hilarious! I have to admit, i had not ever considered staying in a potato or a doggy!

I like the look of all the glamping options, but all of these sound like fun. What is the craziest air b&b that you’ve stayed in Eric?

    1. So far we have been a wee bit dull with our stays because we have only looked for convenience and traveled mainly for the location. However, we did book a penthouse suite in Edinburgh from a locally famous Artist which was totally by accident but absolutely amazing! It was on the top floor and literally looked into their football (soccer) stadium from the outside balcony! Too bad their wasn’t a match but it was amazing! I think Darcee is eyeballing the Castles or the different train cars next while I think I want to try either the Giant Elephant on the Jersey Shore or the Abandoned Post Office in the Ghost Town!

  25. I always prefer airbnbs over hotels. And this list just proves that you can get anything you didn’t even know that you wanted with an airbnb. Wish i could stay in any one of those places.

    1. Yeah, I love how there are so many unique Airbnbs out there if you just look. So many people always act so timid because they are used to the standard hotel room. But if you are willing to explore outside of the norm, you can find some of the best places in the U.S. if not the world to stay on Airbnb!

  26. OMG so many awesome Airbnbs to choose! These are awesome when we are all allowed to travel again 🙂

    1. There is no restriction to taking a road trip to your most unusual Airbnb near your own home!! That is why we really like this idea. Yes, flying is really a pain and yes amusements or other major tourist attractions are limited! But a fun Unique Airbnb experience in America or near wherever you are is 100% open if you are willing to drive to it! Right?

  27. I’m not a fan of Airbnb as a company, due to some bad experiences. But you’ve listed some truly awesome places to stay here!

    1. Sorry to hear that Kez,
I guess it happens, I have stayed in one in Boston that literally was a pull out couch and I thought it was a full bed room. So it can be a bit rough when you have a bad experience. But I always just chalk it up to the risk of taking chances for a great experience.

      1. My experiences were as a host, not a guest. Long story short, a guest damaged something at my property and I found out their million dollar host guarantee is a pile of BS. It was sad because I was a super host and made some decent money out of it.

  28. WOW! This is the ultimate guide on Airbnb’s. It really does make hotels look boring and unimaginative. I am amazed on how many interesting, different and unique styles of airbnb’s there are. This makes me want to road trip around the States just to experience these airbnbs. Fascinating!

  29. This list of best Airbnbs is awesome! I would absolutely be up for staying in a houseboat or the off-the-grid adobe home. But, I am sold on the Bedrock Homestead. This sounds cheesy, but I am really into it! Would be just such a funny experience that I would totally lean into it. (Although, I’m not sold on the barns… I lived in a barn in Colorado for about 8 months, and I’m not sure I’m into the idea of it again.) Thanks for sharing these quirky airbnbs!

    1. Yeah the Bedrock-Homestead looks really cool. I am kind of like you with regards to the Barns though the Corn Crib in Nebraska seems kind of cool especially inside!

    1. Yeah that may be one of the biggest perks of choosing Airbnb over a typical hotel is the local hosts. Often we have made great friends with the hosts and have hung out at their favorite dives which is an experience unto itself!

  30. What a great collection of AirBNB options across the US. I love that there are so many different types of places to stay. A log cabin or igloo are certainly something you would not find in a traditional hotel. That potato in Idaho may be the strangest accommodation I have ever seen! A great list to keep for when we head south of the border again!

    1. Haha, yea the pototato is strange though Sleeping inside of a Dog or an Elephant may be just a tad more strange if you are looking for the most unusual Airbnbs in the U.S. But don’t be so quick to judge cause I am sure there are plenty of quirky Airbnbs in Canada too!

  31. Heard a lot about air bnb but never used the services, its a handy and useful post for travelers , good job 😊

  32. I travel a lot but only due to work. I really want to try out this AirBnB in Alaska because it looks perfect for me. I guess after covid-19, I have to plan a vacation. I am saving it for the booking details that have been given here.

    1. Did you know that Airbnb can be expensed for most work company travel and on top of that it saves your company a ton of money! Plus what better way to build customer rapport than to tell them that you spent the night in one of the coolest Airbnbs in America and it happens to be by their house!

  33. We had considered AirBNB before but never actually stayed in one so far as we like “boring” hotel rooms, especially when they come with complementary breakfast. Some if the AirBNBs you list may make me change my mind as they look very adventurous.

    1. That is weird cause with most of the Airbnb’s we have stayed in they always fed us. In fact, in my very first Airbnb experience, I was staying in Barcelona for only $40 a night a block off the Rambla and my hosts were a polish couple who shared one of their favorite bottles of Polish Vodka from their home town the day before I left! Talk about a breakfast of champs!

    1. Yeah the Yurt Airbnbs were really cool. We actually have, “Stay in a Yurt in Mongolia” as part of our Adventure Travel Bucket List item #195. But until we can get over there, why not find one of the Best Yurt Airbnbs in the U.S. to practice right?

  34. Wow, you really sought out some unusual and unique Airbnbs in the U.S.! I’ve rented an Airbnb in NYC once but that was just an apartment in town, which was great but not as exciting and fun looking as your suggestions here. Will definitely keep this list of Airbnbs in the US in mind for future travels!

    1. haha, yeah to be honest, we tend to stick to typical Airbnbs due to location and pricing. But sometimes you just need to try something quirky or bizarre!

  35. Wow! Your list are so nice ! They all looks lovely and some I find it unique. Will deffo consider them once we travel in the U.S.

  36. Wow, this is such an incredible list of Airbnb’s in the US! I love staying at Airbnb’s but I haven’t stayed anywhere near as quirky as most of these places. To be honest I had no idea there were so many different types of places to stay on Airbnb. This makes me want to road trip in US, but only staying in cool, funky Airbnb’s 🙂

    1. Haha, yeah, there are some really weird categories of what people will put up on Airbnb. I mean who would have ever dreamed up of staying in a Potato or a former Ghost Town Post Office?

  37. I enjoyed so much going through this list. It is true that Airbnb is usually cheap, however, I expected these unique places to be extremely expensive because of their uniqueness. while I did encounter some at over $700 per night, I was surprised to see others at very affordable prices. And then you also earn the experience, which is priceless 🙂

    1. Yeah, I was kind of shocked how many of these unique Airbnbs in the U.S. were actually reasonably priced too! Plus, the few that were a bit “pricey”, if you look at all the details, were actually for rental of a very large Airbnb for more than just a couple. So in theory, it would be like renting an entire boutique hotel for you and your clan if you were looking for a family or big group adventure!

  38. I am from Florida and I am ready to go visit the Great Escape Lakeside Airbnb. I never heard of this place.

    1. I know right! The Great Escape Airbnb in Florida may be one of the coolest Airbnbs in the U.S. we found for sure! The little boy inside of me was almost jumping out of his skin to do the arcade room or that gigantic Guiness World Record Word search they have there!

    2. Wow there are definitely some incredibly unique and weird Airbnb on this list. I can count on one hand those that I would ever stay in – the cube, the container house, the one in Mojave desert. Are you seeing a theme? The best Airbnb are simple, modern design.

      1. Surprised you dont want to stay in Frank Lloyd Wright’s Schwartz House Airbnb in Wisconsin. I mean he is the King of Modern Architecture! But I do love your style!

  39. What a fun collection of quirky AirBnB locations!! Saving this so we can try to check off one or two as we travel the US!

    1. Thanks! These are some of the Best Airbnbs in the U.S. but there were plenty of others too when we were researching which Airbnbs where bucket list worthy!
