  1. Wow Florence in Alabama! So interesting to know it is rich with art and history. Very helpful post too with tips on where to eat and stay. I am saving it with hopes that I will be able to visit some day.

  2. Honestly, I never heard about Billy Reid and Natalie Chanin. But I think it’s because I’m not their target. I heard about Hellen Keller’s birth house, although I don’t recall its location.

  3. I am architecture obsessed, so you had me at the Rosenbaum House! I’ve read everything there is ever to be read about Frank Lloyd Wright, and know the story of this home very well. But I have yet to do any tours. So I would definitely add Florence to the list.

    1. Very cool! We have actually come across several Frank LLoyd Wright Houses around the world but the Rosenbaum House was the first we actually got a full tour of every room and it was very cool for sure. It kind of reminded me of a Retro 70s style set up for some reason with its square feeling inside and out. But if you love architecture I agree it is a must to see in Florence, Alabama!

  4. I can’t say I knew anything about Florence, Alabama before reading this informative post. I was also so fascinated with Hellen Keller’s story as a little girl, so I’d definitely want to check out her old place. The Frank Lloyd Wright house would also be awesome to have a wander through.

    1. The Frank Lloyd Wright house was definitely interesting but we agree that the Hellen Keller house was definitely one of the coolest things to do in Florence, Alabama!

  5. I definitely didn’t know about Florence, Alabama until now! I personally don’t shop much when I travel, but would love to check out Alabama Chanin for sure. They have a great concept and it’s awesome to see more stores taking up eco-friendly initiatives. Dining in an old bank sounds pretty cool too. Thanks for putting Florence on my radar!

  6. I’d never heard of Florence, Alabama either! Obviously very different to it’s Italian namesake but at the same time still seems filled with amazing food, art, culture and history too which is awesome! Looks like a fun place to visit.

  7. It’s funny how some American small towns are named after much bigger and notorious European cities, like Paris or Florence… Sometimes these places hold gems… I would be keen to visit the Alabama Chanin and Billy Reid stores and have a look at their collection, it’s sure to be unique!

    1. Yeah, the Fashion is on point in Florence, Alabama! Billy Reid is always an amazing store to me and I know little about fashion. I think it is funny about the name thing as well but I have to say, Florence, Alabama may have done more for Music in the last 50 – 100 years than Florence, Italy!

  8. You are totally right! we did think of Italy when we read the title of your post! Actually, we had no idea there’s a city called Florence outside of Italy, let alone in Alabama! haha… When we get to travel to the USA again for another road trip (hopefully in a few years?!), we’ll make sure to stop in Florence then! Hopefully, the restaurant Yumm Thai Sushi & Beyond will still exist, as we always like to have some sushi wherever in the world we travel to!

    1. Yeah, you girls will really like it there! Yumm Thai Sushi in Florence, Alabama was great! I will say that we dont often eat sushi when we travel especially in land locked regions but we do pound down the thai food, especially if we finally need a break from trying the cultural stuff!

  9. I never expected to see Alabama following the word Florence but I’m intrigued. This looks like such an interesting all American town, loved the post.

  10. What a super fun place to discover! While Florence, Italy is definitely one of our favorite cities, I could see adding Florence, Alabama to our list. We are huge music buffs, so would love to check out that aspect. And a brewery stop would be great as well, something we are really getting into.

    1. Yeah, the Music aspect of Muscle Shoals & the W.C. Handy aspect alone are worth the trip, though the food and beer definitely enhance the adventure!

  11. I’ll admit, I’d never heard of Florence, Alabama before now. But, it seems to be full of history, so obviously it’s well-known to plenty of other people! The Alabama Chanin store looks so cool and I love the philosophy. I’d been keen to check it out.

  12. Amazing post. This is very informative. I didn’t know there was a place called Florence in Alabama. It holds a lot of history, culture and class. It’s beautiful.

  13. Had never thought about Florence before reading this blog post. Now we’re actually kind of excited about bumping around town for a visit next time we’re in Alabama. Thanks for putting this cool place on our radar!

  14. Very detailed list. I had no idea there could be a Florence in Alabama! Florence Albama looks like a must see place to me. It’s like a cultural hot spot with music, fashion, art and history.

  15. Florence sounds like a fun place to visit. I learned about W.C Handy when we lived in Memphis. One of the many talented people who came out of the south. I would love to visit Helen Keller’s house. I remember reading her story in school and being both sad for her and amazed at what she was able to accomplish. I will be sure to stop in Florence the next time we are in the area.

  16. We recently did a homeschool unit on Helen Keller — it would be super interesting to explore her birthplace. Great share, I love the ones on towns we wouldn’t necessarily think of!

  17. Amazing place! Alabama is now added to my bucket list and i would definitely enjoy what Alabama has in store for us. (Its music, art, fashion, food and culture)

  18. Florence, Albama surely looks quite interesting. The house of music, art, history, food and fashion – all makes up for a perfect holiday. I would surely love to make a visit at Muscle Shoals.

  19. The views are amazing really. So similar to the movie scenes I watch on the television. I would like to be there when given the chance. It would be nice to take pictures too! Haha!

  20. Maybe not the birthplace of the Rennaisance but certainly looks as interesting 🙂 Interesting enough to be on any bucket list! I imagine I would have a great time at the Blues Festival!

  21. Oh!! WOW. Florence is an extremely beautiful place. I would to go to Alabama next year. I was interested about the Billy Reid. And I also like the Rosenbaum House. One day I will try the orange pineapple ice cream. It looks yummy!!

  22. I would never have imagined there was a Florence in Alabama. Nor that it was a bucket list destination! This is not a place I would have thought about for music or fashion! But a visit to Helen Keller’s birthplace sounds interesting. As does seeing another of Frank Lloyd Wright’s houses. But I might just come for the drive in movie. And relive my teenage years again!

  23. We did a road trip to Tupelo (birthplace of Elvis) and Ivy Green (childhood home of Helen Keller). We didn’t know that we should have stayed longer for Florence. I would have loved the fashion and music tour!!!

  24. Ha, you’re right, I totally pictured Italy at first. Looks like there are some hidden gems here! I’m happy to go anywhere where there’s good food so thanks for those suggestions. Also, my husband would love that store Billy Reid.

  25. Would have never thought that Alabama – besides being a sweet home – has so much entertainment and interesting places to offer. Why haven’t you posted some pix of the streetart? I’d love to check it out – before I can go there in person.

    1. So I would but from what I was told the section of street art that we saw is constantly changed. They allow artists to redo an entire set of walls on a block every month or so so it’s like a new art show every month

  26. I grew up in California and have never been to the south, but the thing that most piques my interest about visiting is music history. Nashville and New Orleans are the obvious ones, but I guess now I’ll have to add Florence to my list!

    1. Couldn’t agree more with you Erica. Being from New Orleans I’m kind of spoiled when it comes to music. Being from New Orleans I’m kind of spoiled when it comes to music, but Florence Alabama is the birthplace of the blues. And along with Muscle Shoals it would be tragic not to visit this must see music destination

  27. It’s funny, I’m from the south, but never really think of any place in the deep south as a bucket list destination. That said, I think you proved me wrong because it looks like you guys had a really cool trip! Laid back, fun, historic – awesome. Great to live vicariously!

  28. I could absolutely enjoy eating breakfast at a place with half a plane on the wall. But that aside, I had no idea that this was the home of Muscle Shoals. We’ve spent a fair amount of time in Tennessee and Mississippi, so have seen the influence of Handy’s music there. Fascinating stuff, and definitely somewhere I’d love to see, plus I’ve not made it to Alabama yet – that needs to happen.

  29. Really good review of a small southern town. I have family in Florence and they seem to really like it.

  30. This is a wonderful article that really helps plan a trip to Florence. I haven’t been to Alabama for years – this makes we want to go back! Thanks for making this an easy trip to take!

  31. What a cute little town! It looks so quintessential american, I love that! Definitely changes the way I look at Alabama!

  32. This was something completely new and unknown to me – Florence to me was only Italy, and now it’s Alabama too 🙂

It’s fascinating how the same name brings the two together even in attributes around art. I would love to visit this Florence also someday 🙂

  33. Wow, Alabama has so much to offer! I’d never heard of Florence Alabama before, but I can’t wait to check out that darling town!

  34. I’ll be honest, Alabama has never been on my list of must see destinations. Who knew there was so much to do there? Thanks for sharing!

  35. Yes, yes, yes! Being a southern girl (Mississippi, woo!) I love when people showcase lil parts of the south and all of the character they have. Great post!

  36. Florence Alabama sounds cool, to be honest anything with the name of Florence would sound cool. I really didn’t know there is a place like this. I would like to give it a visit and do what I did in Florence, like eating, shopping and listening to music

  37. My first thought went to Italy. Great to know this new city with all info on its culture festivals and food. It will be wise to time a visit there to coincide with one of the festivals. I am keen on witnessing Helen Keller festival.

  38. This place looks like there is so much to do! I would love to take my kids to the King Drive In before there are none left around! I have not had a chance to travel very much in the United States but after reading this I am wanting to visit Florence (and not the Italy Florence!)

  39. OMG, I should have read your post before I went to Florence to visit Ivy Green! I didn’t know it was also where the blues and soul music we’re born. Then the fashionista in me should have visited Chanin’s place. What a pity!

    1. Ivy Green is great but the music stuff for me was 100% the reason to visit Florence, while Darcee loved the fashion. Hope you get a chance to go back.

  40. What a cute little town. I had never heard of it before. I’m in Memphis right now, which is also heavy into the music industry. It’s so interesting. I love that the two fashion designers are keeping their business right there. That’s so fantastic.

    1. Memphis is really close to Florence Alabama. If you’re staying there for a long time you should think about a side trip. Also if you check out Sun Records, ask them about Florence Alabama. They’ll tell you all about it since Florence is the home of the creator of Sun Records and it’s part of the music triangle with the Memphis.

  41. I am planning to visit Alabama later this year. Have a friend there. This post is a first hand information when I will be there.

  42. You are right! When I read the title, my mind immediately drifted to the Florence of Italy. But Florence, Alabama is indeed a revelation. It looks like an iconic place and indeed the venue of the music reinassance. It seems to be rich in culture, music and otherwise. One of the things that had me riveted was the mention of street art in downtown Florence, I am sure this would be a feast for the eyes.

  43. I love how many European place names are repeated in the “new world” as it was known when those towns and cities were named! I had no idea there was a Florence in Alabama! Looks like a must see for music, fashion, art and history, an all round cultural hot spot.

  44. Florence looks like such a beautiful place. I love to visit art museums too so I guess this will be perfect for me. Your budget planning on hotels also make it super useful!

  45. I really like this article as I am obsessed with Southern USA and the overall feel of it. I also agree that all these small towns of USA somehow have a doomed destiny because of the names they have and the expectation attached to it! – Florence!

  46. After visiting 41 states, Alabama is one of my favorites! We didn’t make it to Florence, AL and now we have a reason to go back to the state. I really want to check out the street murals there and the Center for the Arts.

  47. I never knew there was a Florence in Alabama. Nor did I know that it was the birthplace of Blues music. The Blues Festival would be great to see in July. We love to visit the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. We would definitely put the Rosenblaum House on our list to see.

    1. Yeah I’m not going to lie I’m not the biggest Franklin Lloyd Wright fan but when you get to walk around a house that he created it’s actually kind of cool like a throwback to the 70s or something

  48. This looks like a very entertaining town that I had no idea even existed! I love when they preserve historic elements of a place. Love your comprehensive and helpful info. I’ll let you know if I make it there someday!

  49. We were just in Alabama a few months ago, but missed getting to go to Florence. Will have to plan to hit it next time we pass through. Maybe we will plan accordingly and aim for March! A wine festival sounds right up our alley!!

  50. Great! I love the Ivy Green. I will save this post for my next summer vacation.

  51. So much fun! I never, ever would have thought of this as a destination. Our family road trips from Texas to Florida almost every summer. This souns like a fun side trip along the way!

  52. Ah.. I used to have a pen-friend from alabama he sent me all these cool brochures from his hometown and told me the most amazing stories about Alabama! On my bucket list!

  53. I’ve never heard of Florence AL before. Looks like you found a hidden place for adventuring and that Ice cream looks tasty

  54. Florence looks really nice! I always had a some kind of respect reading posts from bucket lists. Because I know how much does it mean to me when I cross something 🙂 I hope you had a great time!

  55. Great article! Thank you for touring us in Alabama! This is a must-see place and I love the historic places.
