I have been stuck in a rut with the same old adult beverages. Everytime I go to a bar I either order a Jack Sour (a whiskey sour with Jack Daniels), a Chimmey (a belgium beer), or just a regular beer. While most would people say that this is just you finding comfort in life, I disagree because I live in New Orleans where drinking is a great social experiment combined with unbelievable history and adventure.
Thus, I have been inspired by two great books that I recommend to anyone looking for interesting cocktails and history. The first book to inspire me is a true New Orleans treasure called the . This book describes great bars and drinks throughout New Orleans. Personally, I think this book is great because it not only describes the atmosphere of the bar today but the history of it and the people who made the bar what it is today. The second book is an interesting look into the world of drinking called the . The Modern Drunkard offers today's befuddled drinkers a comprehensive and instructive manual on how to drink-and how to do it well. This book campaigns to revive the lost art of tippling and taps a deep vein of boozy lore and legend through the ages, uncovering etiquette and expertise from some of history's greatest guzzlers.
Thus came an idea to create a social club in honor of these two books. Modern Drunkards is my brainchild that was brought to life by my neighbors who all are also in search of a new drink. In an attempt to expand my booze knowledge, we had created a new society dedicated to the art of mixology. Each gathering or adventure will spotlight a particular libation, and the name of the game is creativity. However, this is not a puke-in-your-shoes-pass-out-in-the-gutter kind of gig. We're a classy society or will pretend to be one.

An Afternoon with Marvin - 3/9/08
In New Orleans, you need to experience the history, the food, the people, the music, and of course the cocktails. New Orleans is the originator of the cocktail with the Sazerac & it has perfected many drinks like the Hurricane, the Vieux Carre, the Brandy Milk Punch, the Monsoon, the Mint Julep, etc. So who am I not to partake in the "spirits" of the city. In Fact, its part of my 5 point guideline to travel. Therefore, one sunday afternoon, this Modern Drunkard along with his girlfriend took an adventure in the beautiful French Quarter of New Orleans.
We headed first over to Pat O'Briens and sat out in the Beautiful
Patio Bar. If you are in New Orleans, and the weather is nice, then
this is the place to be. We sat out and enjoyed the warming
weather and cool breeze, watched the people come and go,
listened to music over the outdoor speakers, sipped our Hurricanes,
all while I smoked a good Rocky Patel Cigar. The day couldn't get
any better or so we thought.
