Awesome Adventures In Europe: City Break Edition

Cities are strangely romantic; there’s something about the hustle and bustle and dominating buildings with their gorgeous skylines that have captivated lovers for generations. They’re also great if you want an action packed adventure: since cities have lots of things crammed into one area they’re usually a mecca for all things food, shopping and entertainment. Europe has arguably some of the most popular tourist cities in the world, so if you’re looking for a break that combines culture, history, excitement and plenty to do- here are a few to consider.

Rome

Rome was once the most powerful city in the world, and is packed with history and culture. You have the very religious aspect with Vatican City which is the political and religious center of the Catholic religion. This is believed to be situated on Apostle Peter’s burial place and makes for an interesting place to discover and walk around. However the great thing about modern Rome is that along with ancient ruins, museums, and galleries providing a look into history, there is also a very modern side. From fashion to the arts, shopping, restaurants, festivals and more you certainly won’t feel like you’re stuck in a time warp.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a city of waterways, there are over a hundred kilometers of canals to explore. How about booking a luxury canal tour, or hiring a barge or narrow boat to tour the canals yourself. This incredible network of canals makes for a great way to get around. Plus, you can see different destinations in the city since they take you right through the heart of the action. Besides, what a better way to go sightseeing than being stuck on a bus!

Madrid

Madrid is a city of elegance: stunning boulevards and large, well maintained parks such as the Buen Retiro make it a truly spectacular place to visit. It’s well known for its rich repositories of European art, including the works of many Spanish masters. You won’t be short of things to do in Madrid, Spain– there are palaces, stadiums, museums, markets, a renaissance plaza and so much more.

Milan

Milan is known as the ‘fashion capital of Europe’ and is situated at the heart of Italy’s largest urban and metropolitan area. It’s well known for its opportunities, supermodels and celebrities making for a very glamorous and sophisticated break. You can visit castles and cathedrals, museums, monasteries, there’s no shortage of incredible architecture to feast your eyes upon.

Barcelona

If you’re looking for a destination which is all about a party lifestyle, and affordable prices then there are few better places than Barcelona. This vibrant city is well known for its fantastic nightlife making it a party lover’s dream. However even if that’s not your scene, there’s plenty during the day too. You can walk around the city taking a look at its markets, churches, stadiums and other beautiful buildings. Barcelona is rich in history and contains several Roman archeological sites too.

  1. I love Rome for the food and history – can’t say no to gelato! Would love to go back to Amsterdam and explore more of the city. I’ve not visited Milan, but it’s on my list. These cities are perfect for a weekend getaway.

  2. We have been lucky enough to have visited all these cities. Rome is really interesting but just so busy. Our favourite is Amsterdam and it’s only an hour from our local airport so makes a great weekend break.

    We are going to Brussels this year. It’s another beautiful city with lots of history. I did a weekend visit once before, and loved it.

  6. I was lucky enough to be able to visit Madrid and Rome a few years ago and it was absolutely amazing! Madrid was my favorite, which took me by surprise. The architecture, the food, and the people are all amazing 🙂

  7. I want to visit Rome and Barcelona. My sister and best friend have both been can’t say enough good things. I haven’t been to any of the ones you listed. I hope to go someday with the kids.
