  1. Cologne looks like a city I could easily spend a few days in. The cathedral looks amazing and I’d love to explore the local markets, take a boat ride over the Rhine and try the local foods. I’m not much into museums as such but the Chocolate Museum sounds like one I’d probably love!

  2. I haven’t heard to much about Cologne, but it looks like a great place to visit. I would love to visit the chocolate museum and see all the locks on the Hohenzollern Railway Bridge. I have seen similar things before, but not quite that much! Very cool. I would want to take the cruise on the Rhine River to. I would love to try some local cuisine and would be curious as to what vegetarian options there are.

  3. These are great travel ideas. Not sure when we will get to Germany, but we will go someday. I will try to save this for future reference. We definitely want to ride on the river.

    1. Yeah the River ride was fun! Gave us a taste of how we would spend our honeymoon a few years later when we took the Rhine River Cruise to see all the Christmas Markets. Unfortunately the second time we never made it up to Koln again but it was amazing.

  4. I want to tour the cologne factory and lock in my love. Of course it is a given that I would have to try the local cuisine and drinks. That is half the fun of traveling!

  5. We almost visited Cologne a few years ago. I wish we had! I’d just love to visit the Cologne Cathedral. We’ve explored the Rhine in Switzerland but it would be nice to wander its shores in Germany as well. I wonder if there’s much difference? I’ve never heard of Chocolate Heaven before. That’s would definitively be on our list as a must visit

    1. We also have been on the Rhine in a few different sections of Europe and though they all have an air of similarity, I think in Cologne it felt more like a massive river. The Cathedral in Koln is 100% a must. It was so amazing both inside and out and it generally is the focal point of the entire city. No matter which of the 10 Things to do in Cologne, you always seem to be looking back at the Cathedral!

  6. Ah ha! I was looking for the chocolate factory I visited on a school trip and it is still there! I remember the cathedral and its commanding presence… And I’m pretty sure I did the cruise on the Rhine as well. I also had dinner in a typical restaurant, although I didn’t drink beer at the time.

    1. It’s amazing to see places again that you may have experienced when you were younger. Guess it is a good time for you to rediscover Cologne and perhaps walk the same footprints you did as a kid

  7. You had me at Chocolate Museum! Lol. It sounds like the MuseumsCard and KolnCard would be more than worth their while in Cologne – something that is not always true everywhere.

    1. Haha, I know right! I must have looked like one of the kids from Charlie and The Chocolate Factory walking around eating all the free samples! Darcee had to literally drag me out of there at closing time!

  8. A city with a Chocolate Heaven sounds like Heaven on Earth to me. I always climb the tower, no matter where I am. Then I can eat more chocolate!

I had no idea cologne was named after Cologne. I feel like I just had one of those aha moments where you realize you have missed the obvious for your whole life.

I also had assumed that fairytale castle in the Black Forest was the most visited spot in Germany. I have learned a lot today. Partially that I need to explore more of Germany. I have only been to Munich and Regensberg.

    1. yeah, I was so impressed with Cologne and how amazing it truly was! When I first met my friend Johannes on the Camino and he would tell me about his home city of Koln or Cologne, I had really no idea of where it even was or why anyone would want to visit. But boy am I glad I went because it may be tied if not even eke out Munich for me as one of the coolest cities in Germany!
I do love your philosophy on why all people should climb all towers or mountains…I mean you burn the calories ahead of time, then all the calories form chocolate in the factory don’t really count! Genius!

  9. What a great list of things to do in Koln! The number one on my list is to drink Kölsch, even though I don’t love beer I feel like it goes hand in hand with a Germany vacation!

    1. yeah it is a lot of fun. I am not the biggest beer drinker either but the Kolsch is easily one of the most fun things to do in Cologne, Germany. It was always so light and refreshing!

  10. I’ve never been to Germany but I must say that Cologne is really beautiful. Funny when I first saw the title of your post, my mind immediately went to perfume. Haha! Nice post.

  11. I haven’t been to this part of Germany, but as soon as we are allowed to travel it will be on my list. We enjoy going to Nurburgh for racing. But we plan on moving to Germany once the children are older! Thank you for this detailed post!

  12. I would like to visit The Cologne Cathedral and treat myself at The Schokoladenmuseum. But now, I will be dreaming about these places.

  13. I am loving all your piccys for sure. Oh what I would give right now to be able to do some travel x

  14. I have never been, but everything looks amazing especially the cathedral, the chocolate and beer! I also love the locks! Looked like an amazing trip.

  15. Those are all beautiful places that I would love to visit. I am hoping that life gets back to normal soon so we can enjoy those beautiful places. Thank you for sharing.

  16. Those are all beautiful places that I would love to visit. I am hoping that life gets back to normal soon so we can enjoy those beautiful places.

  17. We have not traveled to Germany (yet) but we do have that on our travel bucket list. I always love exploring museums in any new place we visit. There is so much to learn about the culture! A chocolate factory would be a must-see place too!

  18. Colonge really sounds like an interesting place to visit with lots to do. I’ve heard about the Stangens and how people drink a lot of them.

  19. I’m a massive perfume lover (well, a lover of scent in general, whether mowed lawns or leaves after rain) so being surrounded by lots of eau de cologne would definitely be on my list. And I think I’d have to meet the Lindt bunny too; s/he and I need to have a little chat after a giant motorised version nearly ran me down in a small street in Ghent one Easter…

    1. Oh my God, Bernie! You and I have to have drinks so that I can hear this full story of the lindt Bunny fiasco! If you need some backup I will be glad to help you attack the factory as long as I get to keep all of the spoils of war! Hahahaha

  20. I would surely visit Chocolate Heaven when in Cologne. I’m already dreaming about it now. I’m curious about the Perfume Museum as I haven’t been to one. My sense of smell is particularly sensitive and I wonder how my nose would take it smelling different perfume scents in one museum.

    1. Yeah I was shocked how much I liked the perfume/ cologne museum too as I dont really wear fragrances that much. It wasn’t too bad and the history aspect was amazing.

  21. Köln is really not far from our home (Luxembourg), but somehow we’ve never visited. Some of our colleagues are from Köln actually, and keep telling us to spend a weekend there, especially for the Christmas markets. Maybe we’ll go this December. Thanks for this post which reminds us that we should definitely explore Köln someday soon! 🙂

  22. First of all, straight up, I have to have that photo of the Cologne Cathedral at night. I love nighttime photography so that’s a must! The Schokoladenmuseum would be at the top of the list too. I love chocolate especially sampling it. Do they have a chocolate making experience too? I’m a big foodie but I haven’t had the food on your list (despite having been to Germany twice). Heaven on Earth sounds like a great place to start! And I pick the Excelsior Hotel Ernst am Dom to stay since it’s right across from my target night shot of the Cathedral!

    1. You would love it there Heather. We were truly amazed with all the photography opportunities in Cologne. As for chocolate making, yes they have an entire school above part of the museum’s factory run by Lindt chocolate. There you can make any design though the classic lindt easter bunny was the main character we saw people making!

  23. I remember going to Koln when I was in high school. I was too young for the beer but I remember the local restaurants and the chocolate factory. It was very tempting to pig out on all the chocolate but I think you’d get sick of it pretty quickly.

  24. We’ve never thought about visit Koln before but it looks like you all managed to find plenty to do. That cathedral is stunning and anything that involves chocolate has Jess’ name all over it!

  25. So far in Cologne I have been to the coaching school in the sports university for 30 years. I have not seen much, but so far I have not been tempted to return there again. Who knows, maybe it’ll turn out to stop there. But then certainly not to drink Kölsch. That’s not beer! I think it’s not about a beer from Franconia or a good IPA from a small craft brewery.

  26. I have never been to Germany. Koln looks beautiful, I would love to visit the cathedral. The chocolate haven look right up my ally..

  27. So many great tips for visiting Cologne. I’d absolutely love to go to that original factory and house. I reckon it’d be absolutely fascinating! Looks like a beautiful old city to explore.

  28. What an awesome variety of places and activities you’ve mentioned, thank you for sharing! If I ever get to go back to Germany, I would love to visit Chocolate Heaven.

    1. Yeah the chocolate museum in Cologne is part now of the Lindt Chocolate Family and they make it in the factory there. It was like walking around the Willy Wonka factory

  29. I visited Cologne a while back, one cannot miss the Cathedral as you exit the train station, and yes drink Kölsch. The rest on your list I;ll have to go back someday.

  30. This is one city I’ve yet to visit – so will have to add it to my bucket list! I’ve actually only been to Berlin in Germany, but I loved the German architecture (and all the food and beer!), and it looks like Koln is no exception! x

  31. I’ve only been to Munich but would love to visit Cologne at some point, I’ve heard great things and I think I have a friend that lives there to (not sure on that one though) You have a great and varied list here 😀 Would love to visit the chocolate museum but when in Germany theres nothing better than drinking beer haha, so a Kölsch would be at the top of my list 😀

  32. I absolutely love the architecture of Cologne Cathedral, its probably the one top place I’d visit if I am ever in Cologne. Also, the cruise on Rhine river looks pretty cool! Thanks for this list of top 10 things to do, will come in handy when I plan a trip.

  33. Love this list, especially the top tips and fun facts. Really informative and well written. Definitely saving this for future reference.

  34. Oh Wow! The cathedral is absolutely beautiful and definitely worth climbing the 533 steps up the tower for the amazing views of Cologne. I’m a huge chocolate lover and will be visiting the Chocolate museum then eat and drink more chocolate at the cafe. Why not! Is it worth getting the Museums card? Great tips on Cologne, I’ve saved this for when I visit!

    1. Lana when you go you will definitely want to get the koln card but we also recommend getting the museum card because it gives you free entry into all the museums for the city and gives you free Transportation on the days that you go to the museums 2

  35. This is a great compilation! I especially like the idea of visiting the chocolate factory! 🙂 I’ve been to Cologne ages ago and visited the Cathedral, but it looks like I’m overdue for another visit! Thanks for posting!

  36. I would love to travel Germany one day, it looks like such an incredible place with so many things todo!

  37. I have been in Cologne many times already, the interesting place to visit for me is the Cathedral of course, we always spend our christmas times here for the christmas market. We haven’t made a complete tour of the city yet but I could conclude that this city is a beautiful and interesting one.

  38. Ah you had me at chocolate heaven! I’ve been to Germany many times, but not yet to Koln! The Cathedral is very impressive, I love that Gothic architecture, but walking 553 steps to reach the top sounds tiring! I need to get my fitness up before visiting!

    1. Yeah not going to lie, those steps were you in a little bit much for me and I remember walking down the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and it still wasn’t as bad as the Cologne Cathedral steps but the views are definitely worth it

  39. Point 9, is definetely something I have heard and I did not know that it had its roots in a city in Germany. You have a good list there, I would probably do the musuem, choclate tour for the frills, and do the river/cathedral as a must. Earmarked for whenever i visit Germany.

    Kartik

  40. Thank you for sharing this great list of things to do. When I finally get to visit Cologne I will definitely check some of these out.

  41. Very nice collection of places with amazing pictures. I would love to visit Koln some day especially the majestic cathedral and the tempting chocolate heaven. Locking your love on the Hohenzollern Railway Bridge seems quite interesting. And I would so love to try Kölsch as well. Love this post! 🙂

  42. Couldn’t agree more with much of this list. The Cathedral is a truly awe inspiring icon that looms large over the city! Good to see the chocolate factory and Kölsch beer get mentions too 🙂

  43. I’ve read a lot of beautiful blog articles about Cologne. It’s a shame that we haven’t included in our itineraries during our 3 visits in Germany. Although we really had a great in time cruising the Middle Rhine.

    1. Yeah, I’m going to be honest Liz if we hadn’t been forced to fly into cologne, I probably wouldn’t have gone there because I knew very little about it except for the fact that the cathedral is a major christian pilgrimage site due to the fact that it holds the relics of the Magi. But that was all I knew about the city. However fate sent us there and we had an unbelievable time. I love it when you find a place With No Expectations yet it totally surprise you and becomes unbelievable experience

  44. Great ideas guys! I’m a big fan of love lock bridges around the world and love it that you’ve included one here. After a bit of self-love on that bridge, I’d have to hop straight to the chocolate I think >< I'm making Europe plans for 2018, so thanks for the travel tips!

    1. Thanks Alice. We had an unbelievable time there and although the Love Lock Bridge is phenomenal, for this guy it was all about the chocolate Museum you!

  45. I wish I found your post earlier – my boss told me he was going to Cologne last weekend, I could give him so recommendations. The cathedral is spectacular and my fave point would be to eat German food (which I like) and get some pints 🙂 Good luck with your pursuit and hopefully Armenia next!!

  46. Well to be honest, being an Asian, it’s the first time I have heard about Cologne. Germany is a hot favourite among tourists and we shall visit it some day. I liked all that you shared about Cologne, our interests match !
Specially, loved the Cologne cathedral, that’s unbelievably beautiful and massive. I would also like to try the padlocks on the bridge. I love doing everything that promises more years with my loved ones. And yeah we are chocolate lovers too, so the idea of visiting a chocolate museum excites me. Beautiful post. Learnt few new things.

  47. Did you say Chocolate Museum? Now that’s one reason to go but I’d love to check out Cologne Cathedral, I’ve heard great things about it. The trip down the River Rhine looks cool thing to do. Thanks for your tips.

  48. As a UNESCO site, Cologne’s cathedral is a definite must-see, but like you said, there’s a lot to see in Cologne. We have friends in Cologne and Kolsch is always tops on the “to-do” list when we visit.

One tip about the Schokoladenmuseum: You can make a customized chocolate bar and put your favorite goodies in and on it! I think that was the best part of the museum, even better than the free chocolate samples. 🙂

  49. Cologne looks like a fun city to visit – I can’t believe I’ve never been to Germany! I would love to try Kolsch, sounds like a really interesting experience!

  50. I heart Köln too! I loved the view from the cathedral tower, that was definitely my highlight. And now that I’ve acquired the taste for kölsch beer as well, I can’t wait to revisit the birthplace of the style.

  51. We didn’t make it to Cologne this year but hope to go in the future. My trip around the Rhine got messed up thanks to bad weather so, we need to go again for sure. Each German city has many choices. It is even difficult to decide which ones to visit. But, I loved the Rhine area. I can see myself living there.

  52. I’ve seen pictures before of the Cathedral but never realized it housed the remains of the Magi. The architecture is just un-real! Would love to try the Kolsh at the source (sorry, don’t have the right keyboard for the accents) especially if its a little more hoppy. Sounds like a great way to experience the culture!

  53. Cologne’s cathedral is my favourite place to visit in Cologne – it just so majestic. Next time I am there I’d love to take a river cruise down the Rhine!

    1. Yeah I knew very little about the Cologne Cathedral or the city in general till I got there. Couldn’t believe that they had the relics of the Magi and it was one set Pilgrim destination

  54. I love that you put accommodation recommendations! It’s cute that Germany also has that place for locks just like in Korea. And beer! Great architecture also in Cologne!

  55. You’re right, many people tend to overlook Cologne. It gets overshadowed by cities with more dramatic history. Our favorite experience while in Cologne was the Rhine Cruise. Something everyone should do.
